You do not necessarily need to convert H.265 (HEVC) videos to H.264 before sending an FFmpeg playlist to YouTube Live. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists HEVC as a supported codec for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. First inspect your files, choose the ingest protocol, then match the output’s codec, bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and audio to YouTube’s requirements. Test the actual playlist in YouTube Studio before relying on a VPS process.

An FFmpeg input playlist and a YouTube HLS media playlist are different things: a text file that sequences local videos does not make the outgoing stream HLS. For ordinary live ingest, RTMPS may be the simpler route; HLS has additional segment and playlist requirements.

Do you need to convert H.265 to H.264?

Not just because the source is H.265. YouTube’s live encoder settings list H.265/HEVC, H.264, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. YouTube also supports HEVC for HLS ingest. Codec support does not guarantee that every file’s container, pixel format, audio tracks, or FFmpeg muxing combination will work unchanged, so inspect your sources and test the chosen output path.

If the HEVC stream can be passed through in a compatible output, stream-copying avoids the CPU cost and potential quality loss of video re-encoding. Transcode when compatibility, inconsistent sources, or a normalized output requires it. A playlist containing files with different dimensions, frame rates, or audio layouts may need a common output configuration.

Inspect the files before building the stream

Use FFmpeg’s inspection tool on each input and note the video codec, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate, container, audio codec, channel count, and sample rate. For example:

ffprobe -v error -show_streams -show_format -of json input.mp4

Repeat this for every playlist entry. Confirm that FFmpeg can open the files and that the intended video and audio streams are present. Keep a written inventory: it will show whether the playlist is consistent enough to pass through or needs transcoding and audio normalization. The choice depends on the actual files, not the H.265 label alone.

Choose RTMPS or HLS ingest

RTMPS: the usual starting point

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. Its general encoder guidance supports H.265/HEVC, allows up to 60 fps, calls for constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Audio may be AAC or MP3; 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC. See YouTube’s encoder settings for the current details.

HLS: use its specific packaging rules

YouTube’s HLS ingest guidance supports HEVC and AAC, AC3, or EAC3 audio. HLS is not simply RTMPS with a different URL. The published requirements include:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

  • MPEG-TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
  • A rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
  • HTTPS POST/PUT requests and no byte ranges.
  • Audio configured for the supported codec and channel format.

Choose HLS when its protocol or codec path fits your requirements, and configure FFmpeg’s HLS output to meet those rules. Do not point a regular FFmpeg input playlist at YouTube and assume that this creates a compliant HLS ingest.

Set video bitrate, frame rate, keyframes, and audio

Use the bitrate row for the output codec, resolution, and frame rate—not the source file’s nominal bitrate. YouTube’s current table gives these H.265/AV1 recommendations:

Output Recommended video bitrate Minimum video bitrate
1080p30 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p30 6 Mbps not stated in the cited row
720p60 6 Mbps not stated in the cited row

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or network can sustain the stream. Leave capacity for network variation and check the connection’s sustained upload capability. YouTube advises choosing quality to suit the connection and running a speed test. Its current bitrate table is on the encoder settings page.

For RTMP/RTMPS, configure CBR and target a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set the frame rate to the intended output, within YouTube’s guidance of up to 60 fps. For audio, YouTube lists stereo at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, and 5.1 at 48 kHz and 384 kbps. RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC for 5.1. HLS accepts AAC, AC3, or EAC3 and lists the same sample rates and bitrates. Match audio settings to the protocol and actual track layout rather than forcing a channel count the source does not contain.

Build an FFmpeg playlist stream

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text file of inputs in sequence. Create a playlist file such as playlist.txt with one entry per line:

file '/srv/video/part-01.mp4'
file '/srv/video/part-02.mp4'
file '/srv/video/part-03.mp4'

Paths must be accessible to the account running FFmpeg. Use the concat demuxer only when the files are suitable for concatenation; differences in streams or formats may cause errors or discontinuities. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for concat and muxer options.

Pass through compatible streams

If the video and audio are compatible with the chosen output and YouTube accepts the resulting stream, stream copy avoids a video re-encode. The general command shape for RTMPS is:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This is a template, not a universal command: it assumes a concat-demuxer playlist, compatible input streams, and an RTMPS endpoint that accepts the FLV muxer path. Some sources may require audio conversion, stream selection, or a different muxing arrangement. Confirm the current server URL and stream-key setup shown for your broadcast in YouTube Studio; do not assume a fixed endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Transcode when pass-through is unsuitable

If you need consistent output or the pass-through path fails compatibility checks, encode to a codec and settings supported by the selected ingest. For example, an H.264 RTMPS output can use a command shape like:

ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

This illustrates CBR-style rate control, 1080p30 bitrate guidance, a two-second GOP at 30 fps, and stereo AAC settings. Set the output resolution explicitly if it must differ from the input, and change bitrate, frame rate, GOP, and audio settings together to match the actual target. This example transcodes to H.264; it does not imply H.264 is mandatory. For a HEVC transcode, use an available HEVC encoder and verify the exact muxing and ingest path rather than assuming every FFmpeg build supports the same encoders.

Protect the stream key and test in YouTube Studio

  1. In YouTube Studio, open the live control room, create or select the broadcast, and retrieve its current stream URL and stream key. Interface labels can change; use the ingest details shown for that broadcast.
  2. Store the key outside public scripts and repositories. Supply it through a protected environment or configuration mechanism, restrict access to the VPS account that needs it, and avoid printing it in logs or shell history.
  3. Start FFmpeg and confirm that YouTube receives the signal. Check YouTube Studio’s stream health and read any warnings or errors before making the stream public or relying on it for a long run.
  4. Test with movement and audio similar to the planned content. Watch for playlist entries failing to advance, audio disappearing at clip boundaries, bitrate instability, or incompatible streams.
  5. Verify that the chosen reconnect behavior works for the failures you expect. A clean initial start does not demonstrate that the process survives a network interruption or VPS reboot.

YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health during the event. Its guidance can change, so check the current encoder settings and, for HLS, HLS setup requirements before deployment.

Keep a VPS stream running through interruptions

FFmpeg documents a FIFO muxer with options such as attempt_recovery and a recovery wait time for handling temporary network failures. The FFmpeg all-options documentation includes an example; treat it as an option to evaluate, not a promise that every failure will recover transparently.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A long-running service also needs process supervision so FFmpeg can be restarted if it exits, and operational monitoring that can alert you to a stalled or unhealthy broadcast. Test the whole recovery chain: process exit, network loss, restart, and return of the signal to YouTube. No particular VPS size or provider capacity is established here; choose based on whether you are stream-copying or encoding, the selected output, and measured resource use under the real workload.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube does not receive a signal Wrong stream URL or key, unavailable endpoint, or protocol/muxer mismatch Copy the current ingest details from YouTube Studio, keep the key private, and confirm that the FFmpeg output muxer matches the selected ingest path.
HEVC pass-through fails or produces an unusable stream The codec may be supported while the specific container, stream layout, pixel format, or muxing path is unsuitable Inspect the streams with ffprobe; test a compatible pass-through path or transcode to a supported target.
Playlist stops at a clip boundary Missing file, inaccessible path, incompatible streams, or concat-demuxer limitations Check each playlist path and file permission, then test the sequence and stream properties before the live run.
Audio drops, changes, or is rejected Different track layouts between files or settings that do not match the protocol Inspect every audio stream; normalize or transcode as needed. For RTMP/RTMPS 5.1, use AAC.
Stream health reports bitrate or keyframe issues Rate control, target settings, output frame rate, or network capacity is out of line with YouTube’s guidance Use CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, set a two-second keyframe interval (maximum four seconds), compare the bitrate with the correct codec/resolution/frame-rate row, and verify sustained upload capacity.
HLS ingest is rejected Segments or playlist do not satisfy YouTube’s HLS requirements Check TS format, 1–4 second segment duration, the five-outstanding-segment limit, HTTPS POST/PUT, and the no-byte-ranges requirement.
FFmpeg does not return after a temporary outage No recovery configuration or process supervision, or the failure exceeds what the recovery path can handle Evaluate FFmpeg FIFO recovery options, supervise the process, and test interruption and restart behavior while watching YouTube Studio.
