To run a 24/7 ambient channel through OBS, connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and stream key, then loop a local video or a playlist in an OBS scene. The key is a private credential—not a public channel ID. YouTube must enable live streaming for your channel, and an always-running encoder depends on the computer, power, and internet connection staying available.
Before you start: check YouTube Live access
- Your channel must be verified and must not have had a livestreaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before you plan to broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Prepare the video and audio you intend to stream, and confirm that you have the rights to use them live. A looping scene does not change YouTube’s eligibility or content rules.
- For a 24/7 session, plan for the practical dependencies: a stable upload connection, a computer that will not sleep or shut down, and a way to recover if OBS or the connection stops.
Create or select a YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Choose the Stream tab for a continuous stream, or select a scheduled stream if you are preparing a specific event.
- In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that tells an encoder where to send its feed. Keep it private. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Connect OBS to YouTube with the stream key
- Open OBS and go to Settings → Stream.
- If YouTube is available as a service, select it and follow the connection flow or choose the option to use a stream key. Otherwise select a custom service, enter the stream URL from YouTube as the server, and paste the key into the stream-key field.
- Apply the settings and close the dialog. Leave OBS defaults unchanged unless you have a specific reason to adjust them; output settings should match your source, available upload bandwidth, and intended stream quality. OBS’s setup guide covers the connection options. OBS: Streaming with x264
Never show the key in a screen recording, stream overlay, screenshot, or public tutorial. If someone else obtains it, reset it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and replace the old value in OBS.
Make the ambient visual and audio repeat
Loop one video file
- In the OBS scene you want to use, add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop option so playback starts again when the file ends.
- Check the preview for framing and confirm that the audio meters move at a sensible level during playback.
Rotate through a playlist
- Add a VLC Video source in OBS and choose the files for the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist if you want the files to repeat as a set.
- Install VLC first if the VLC Video source is unavailable; OBS requires VLC for that source. Confirm the order, transitions or gaps you expect by watching a full cycle before going live.
OBS documents Media Source looping and VLC playlist looping in its Media Sources guide. Use the single-file method for one repeating asset; choose VLC Video when you want a rotating set and are comfortable installing VLC.
Choose output settings for your connection and source
There is no universal bitrate preset established for every ambient channel: the appropriate output depends on resolution, frame rate, encoder, source motion, and upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations and OBS’s output controls rather than copying a number intended for different conditions. Make a short test and check YouTube’s preview before relying on a long session. YouTube’s setup guidance explains stream settings and encoder setup: YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- 【Package Content & Note】 1x HD Audio Capture Card , 1x USB 3.0 to USB C Adapter (A-side 3.0, B-side 2.0), 1x user manual. Please note that you need to restart the OBS Studio software after the audio setup is complete, otherwise it will result in no sound output. When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Keep resolution and frame rate at or below what your source and computer can handle consistently.
- Choose a bitrate that fits your sustained upload speed, leaving bandwidth headroom for network variation and other household traffic.
- Use OBS’s recommended/default keyframe interval unless YouTube’s current instructions for your selected workflow specify otherwise.
- Watch OBS’s dropped-frame and encoding indicators during testing. A high setting that causes instability is worse than a lower, steady output.
Test, start, and monitor the stream
- Run a short private or otherwise appropriate test before committing to a continuous broadcast. Verify the scene, looping behavior, audio level, and connection.
- For an event, YouTube advises setting up in advance, starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event, and checking the Live Control Room preview. Verify the watch page on the channel and on a mobile device, and monitor audio and video. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview; then start the event there if the selected workflow calls for it.
- Check the stream after it begins, not only before. For a continuous channel, periodically confirm that playback, audio, and the encoder remain active.
- To end the broadcast, stop the event in YouTube as appropriate for your workflow and stop the encoder in OBS.
Plan for archives and long sessions
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete replay. If replay access matters, check the current Studio behavior and consider ending and restarting within the documented window; do not rely on a longer session as a guaranteed full archive. The cited guidance does not establish a maximum stream duration. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
Protect the channel and the audio rights
YouTube’s terms require creators to have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights, and state that live content must comply with its Community Guidelines. YouTube Terms of Service

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. Even a track you have licensed may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. Before streaming ambient music, obtain permission whose scope expressly covers livestreaming and any archive you intend to keep, save the license or written permission, and ask the rights holder whether channel allowlisting is needed. Labels such as “royalty-free” do not by themselves establish that a track is cleared for your particular live use. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
Troubleshooting common OBS and YouTube problems
YouTube does not accept the stream key
- Confirm you copied the key for the stream selected in the Live Control Room, not another scheduled stream.
- Check that OBS has the matching stream URL and key, then re-enter them without extra spaces.
- If the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS with the replacement.
The stream does not appear in the Live Control Room
- Confirm OBS is streaming and that its service/server and key match YouTube’s current stream details.
- Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, and a recent restriction can block access.
- Allow time for the preview to appear, then check OBS’s connection status and network access.
The video freezes or OBS drops frames
- Reduce the output bitrate or resolution and test again; the upload connection may not sustain the chosen settings.
- Check whether the computer is overloaded, entering sleep mode, or using power-saving settings that suspend OBS or networking.
- Use a wired connection where practical and avoid relying on a connection whose upload capacity varies sharply.
The ambient file stops instead of repeating
- For a single Media Source, verify that Loop is enabled and that the source points to the intended file.
- For a playlist, verify Loop Playlist, the playlist entries, and that VLC is installed.
- Test a complete playback cycle in OBS before starting a long session.
The stream is interrupted for copyrighted content
- Stop using the disputed material until you confirm the applicable rights and permission scope.
- Contact the rights holder about livestream permission and allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent automated interruption.
- Keep documentation of the permission and ensure it also covers any replay or archive you plan to retain.
Or let it run in the cloud
With OBS, the computer, power, and home internet connection have to remain available for the stream to continue. StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is not a camera feed or an OBS replacement for a live camera.
