For a quick estimate, plan for about 2.5–3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15–25 Mbps for 4K video per stream. The exact figure depends on the service: Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for 4K, YouTube lists 20 Mbps, and Disney+ recommends 25 Mbps in its US guidance. Add the estimates for simultaneous streams, then account for other household internet use. These are recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted playback.
Bandwidth and data use measure different things
Bandwidth is a rate, usually measured in megabits per second (Mbps): it helps answer whether your connection can deliver video smoothly at a given moment. Data use is a volume, often measured in gigabytes (GB) per hour or month: it helps answer whether streaming may use up a data allowance.
A stream’s data use depends on its quality and playback settings, among other factors. Mbps and GB per hour are not interchangeable; one cannot be converted to the other without assumptions about how long and at what rate the video is delivered.
How much speed streaming services recommend
Official recommendations differ by service and quality. The figures below are starting points for a single stream, not minimums that guarantee playback in every home.

Netflix’s current speed guidance includes live events in its advice but does not give them a separate figure. YouTube says playback modes and device compatibility can affect availability. Disney+’s figures are from its US-facing speed guidance dated September 30, 2024. Netflix and YouTube do not show a publication year on the cited help pages, which were accessed in 2026. Check the services’ current guidance if you need an up-to-date recommendation.
These recommendations are not interchangeable: for example, the cited 4K recommendations range from Netflix’s 15 Mbps to Disney+’s 25 Mbps. Use the guidance for the service and quality you actually watch rather than treating one number as a universal requirement.

Estimate speed for multiple simultaneous streams
Start with the recommendation for each stream’s service and resolution, then add them together. For example, two simultaneous 1080p streams correspond to a starting estimate of 10 Mbps using Netflix’s or YouTube’s 5 Mbps guidance for each. Two 4K streams correspond to 30 Mbps using Netflix’s guidance, 40 Mbps using YouTube’s, or 50 Mbps using Disney+’s US recommendation.
Those sums do not account for video calls, downloads, game updates, or other household traffic. Leave capacity for those activities and normal variation in the connection. The cited service guidance does not establish a universal extra percentage or guarantee that a plan advertising the summed rate will deliver it consistently to every device.

How much data streaming uses per hour
For data-cap planning, use estimates tied to the service’s quality setting and device rather than inferring data use from a speed recommendation.
Netflix estimates by playback setting
Netflix’s published estimates for one device on its high setting are up to 1 GB per hour for SD, up to 3 GB per hour for HD, and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K UHD. It estimates up to 0.3 GB per hour on low and up to 0.7 GB per hour on medium. Actual consumption depends on playback quality and settings.

Disney+ estimates by device and setting
Disney+’s UK help guidance, published June 29, 2026, reports approximate smart-TV or TV-connected-device use of 7.7 GB per hour for automatic 4K UHD, 2 GB per hour for moderate 1080p, and 0.7 GB per hour for save-data SD. The page gives different values for mobile devices and web browsers; in the described configuration, computer browsers are limited to 720p HD. Treat these as Disney+ estimates for the stated guidance, not a conversion table for other services or devices.
To estimate a household’s monthly use, multiply the hourly estimate for the setting actually used by viewing hours, then add the devices and streams that apply. The figures above are estimates, not fixed amounts for every title or session.

What to check if streaming buffers despite an adequate plan
An internet plan’s advertised speed does not guarantee that every device will receive that rate at every moment. Wi-Fi distance, competing connected devices, or an ISP outage can contribute to buffering. Disney+ lists these as possible causes in its troubleshooting guidance.
- Check the device’s connection. If it uses Wi-Fi, move it nearer the router or access point. Disney+’s Help Center advises: “If you’re using a wireless connection, move your device closer to the Wi-Fi source”.
- Reduce competing traffic. Close other apps or pause downloads on devices sharing the connection, then see whether playback improves.
- Restart the equipment. Power the streaming device and network equipment off and on, following the device or router maker’s normal restart instructions.
- Test with Ethernet if possible. A wired connection from the TV or streaming device to the router can help determine whether Wi-Fi is the problem. It cannot increase the speed included in your internet plan.
- Consider an outage or service issue. If several devices have trouble, check whether the ISP or streaming service is experiencing a problem.

If your question is about watching video, the speed and data estimates above apply.
