Wowza Streaming Cloud is the legacy name; current setup screens and documentation use Wowza Video. To make a first live stream, create a Wowza Video stream, connect a camera or encoder using its generated connection details, start the stream, and check playback. The detailed OBS walkthrough below is marked Legacy by Wowza, so current setup options may differ; the current quick setup documentation was updated January 23, 2026.
Before you start
You need access to a Wowza Video account or trial account and a video source, such as a camera, encoder, or capture device. This walkthrough uses OBS Studio as a software encoder and RTMP as the input protocol. A webcam is optional if you already have another usable source.
- Use a modern browser that supports HTML5 and CSS3. Wowza recommends the latest Chrome, which it says has been tested most extensively.
- Have OBS installed and be able to select your camera or capture device as its video source.
- Keep the server address, stream name, username, and password Wowza generates private. They are unique to your stream; do not copy credentials from an example or share them publicly.
Create a Wowza Video live stream
- Sign in to Wowza Video and select Add Live Stream.
- Enter a descriptive stream name. Choose the broadcast location closest to the video source that supports the features you need. The default may be based on your browser’s time zone, so review it rather than assuming it is nearest your source; proximity can reduce network distance and latency.
- For an OBS-based setup, select Other RTMP as the source type, then complete the remaining source and transcoder options. Other RTMP encoders use a similar connection approach.
- If the account and location offer both adaptive bitrate and passthrough, choose based on your delivery needs. Adaptive bitrate creates multiple renditions; passthrough sends the source rendition without transcoding and does not create adaptive bitrate renditions. Passthrough requires a 24×7 subscription and is not available in every broadcast location, so confirm eligibility in your account before selecting it.
- Choose whether to create a hosted page. Selecting Yes gives you a straightforward place to test playback. This choice cannot be added after stream creation. If you choose not to create one, you can still use the supplied embed code or playback URLs with your own webpage or player.
- Review the configuration and finish creating the live stream.
Connect OBS to Wowza Video over RTMP
- Open the stream’s Overview page in Wowza Video and find Source Connection Information.
- In OBS, go to Settings → Stream, set Service to Custom, and copy Wowza’s Primary Server into OBS’s Server field.
- Copy Wowza’s Stream Name into OBS’s Stream Key field.
- Enable Use authentication in OBS. Enter the generated Source Username and Source Password from Wowza Video.
- Configure OBS to capture the intended camera or capture device, save the settings, and check that the source appears as expected in OBS.
Do not substitute Wowza Streaming Engine server details for Wowza Video’s generated cloud connection information. They belong to separate products.
Start the stream and verify playback
- In the legacy manual walkthrough, start the live stream in Wowza Video first.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming.
- Check for a preview in Wowza Video. The tutorial says the preview thumbnail updates every five seconds.
- Open the Hosted Page URL and click play to test viewer playback. The Statistics panel can show connection, transcoding, and delivery metrics.
Current quick setup also documents RTMP autostart, enabled by default in that flow: a valid encoder stream can start the live stream automatically. Autostart cannot be edited after initial stream creation, and enabling it prevents transcoder security authentication. The current autostart flow is not the same as the legacy tutorial’s manual sequence, so follow the controls shown for the stream you created.

Choose the right input and stream behavior
Input protocols and devices
Current quick setup lists RTMP, SRT, RTSP, WebRTC, and stream-from-file inputs. It also offers specialized setup options for Wowza Streaming Engine, vMix, Epiphan, Telestream, LiveU, Teradek, Matrox, and IP cameras. The options shown depend on the input type. Choose the protocol your camera or encoder can send, and check whether the source should push directly or whether Wowza should pull it through a CDN endpoint.
Region and push or pull
The region is where Wowza Video transcodes and processes the stream. For RTMP input, the current quick setup may select a region close to the source automatically. RTSP sources and certain RTMP sources can be pushed directly to a transcoder or pulled through a CDN endpoint; available choices depend on the source and autostart settings.

Autostart and autostop
For RTMP input, autostart is available and enabled by default in the documented quick setup flow. With it enabled, a valid encoder stream starts the live stream; autostop can stop it after the encoder stops sending valid RTMP. Decide at creation time, since the autostart setting cannot be edited later. Also account for the authentication trade-off: enabling autostart prevents transcoder security authentication.
Hosted page or your own player
A hosted page is a useful playback smoke test. You can instead embed the player or use playback URLs with a separate player. Settings made for Wowza’s player may be disregarded when you use your own player, so verify the playback path your audience will actually use.

Stop the stream when the event ends
Stop the stream in Wowza Video and stop OBS when you are finished. Wowza’s getting-started tutorial warns that transcoding charges accrue after a stream is started even when it is not actively receiving content. It says idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes, but that is not a substitute for stopping the stream yourself when the event ends.
Common setup problems
- OBS cannot connect: Recheck that OBS is set to Custom, the Primary Server is in Server, and the Stream Name is in Stream Key. If authentication is enabled, use the generated source username and password.
- No preview appears: Confirm that the correct stream is selected in Wowza Video, OBS is sending from the intended camera or capture device, and the stream has been started using the flow configured for it. In the legacy manual sequence, start Wowza first and then OBS.
- Viewer page does not play: Test the Hosted Page URL and click play. If using your own page or player, check that you used the supplied embed code or playback URL and verify player-specific settings in that player.
- Cannot find an expected setup option: Input type, location, plan eligibility, and autostart choices affect which controls appear. Passthrough, in particular, depends on both a 24×7 subscription and a supported broadcast location.
- Stream keeps running after the source stops: Check whether autostop is enabled for your RTMP setup, and stop the stream directly in Wowza Video when you are done rather than relying on idle cleanup.
Wowza Video is not Wowza Streaming Engine
Wowza Video is the cloud service used in this getting-started flow. Wowza Streaming Engine is separate media-server software that can act as an encoder/source or connect to Wowza Video. Do not enter an Engine server IP or its default RTMP port as though it were the Wowza Video cloud server address. Engine-specific connection fields and playback setup belong to the Engine workflow.
