To stream a Wirecast production to BoxCast, schedule a broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard, then send Wirecast’s output using a BoxCast RTMP or SRT source. You can also route Wirecast’s secondary display output to a BoxCaster hardware encoder. For most software-only setups, RTMP is the simpler path; choose SRT if your BoxCast source and Wirecast installation are configured for it. BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends starting Wirecast two to three minutes before the scheduled start so you can confirm the feed.

Before you connect Wirecast

  • Schedule the broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard before using the documented direct RTMP or SRT workflows.
  • Create or select the matching BoxCast source and keep its connection details private. Do not show a live stream key in screenshots or share it publicly.
  • Check the installed Wirecast version’s protocol support. BoxCast says its generated RTMP URLs default to RTMPS, while standard Wirecast versions do not support RTMPS; if your version cannot connect using RTMPS, BoxCast instructs you to remove the “s” and use the RTMP URL form.
  • For third-party RTMP ingestion, use H.264; BoxCast’s general RTMP guidance says H.265/HEVC is not currently supported.

BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific instructions are in its Wirecast + BoxCast guide. For creating a source, see Add a New RTMP Source and Add a Source (Encoder) in the BoxCast Dashboard.

Method 1: Send Wirecast to BoxCast over RTMP

  1. Create or select the BoxCast RTMP source. In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources and create or select an RTMP source. Copy the source’s Server URL and Stream Key.
  2. Set Wirecast’s destination. In Wirecast, open Output > Output Settings and set Destination to RTMP Server.
  3. Enter the connection details. Paste the BoxCast server URL into the address field and the stream key into the stream field. If your Wirecast interface uses one combined URL field, follow its format for the server URL and key. Save the destination if you will reuse it.
  4. Start the encoder and check the feed. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast, then press Stream in Wirecast. BoxCast says the broadcast can go live at its scheduled time even if the encoder starts sending earlier. Its Wirecast-specific guide recommends starting two to three minutes early.

If Wirecast will not connect to the RTMP server

Check whether the URL begins with rtmps://. BoxCast says its generated RTMP URLs use RTMPS by default and that standard Wirecast versions do not support it. If your installed Wirecast version lacks RTMPS support, use the RTMP form by removing the “s”—for example, BoxCast gives rtmp://rtmp.boxcast.com/live instead of rtmps://rtmp.boxcast.com/live. Verify your version’s capabilities before changing the URL.

Method 2: Send Wirecast to BoxCast over SRT

  1. Open the BoxCast SRT source settings. In the BoxCast Dashboard, open Sources, select the SRT source, and open its Wirecast configuration values.
  2. Choose SRT in Wirecast. Open Output > Output Settings and set the destination to SRT: Secure Reliable Transport.
  3. Copy the source parameters. Enter the Dashboard’s Address, Port, Passphrase, and Stream ID. Leave the passphrase blank if encryption is disabled.
  4. Set the audio format. Configure encoder audio as stereo, 48 kHz. BoxCast warns that other values can result in no audio or audio that sounds incorrect to viewers.
  5. Schedule and start. Schedule the BoxCast broadcast, then start Wirecast early enough to confirm that the feed is ready. BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends two to three minutes before the scheduled start.

Method 3: Use Wirecast with a BoxCaster

This optional hardware route sends Wirecast’s program output from a secondary display output to a BoxCaster. BoxCast says its hardware encoder handles video and audio encoding for the computer and can use BoxCast communication protocols; it also gives BoxCast support additional broadcast data and logs. You do not need a BoxCaster to use the direct RTMP or SRT methods.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Connect the computer’s compatible video output to the BoxCaster. Confirm the computer’s output, the BoxCaster input, and cable compatibility before relying on this setup. An HDMI cable may be appropriate for this hardware connection, but it is not required for direct RTMP or SRT.
  2. In Wirecast, open Output > Multi-Viewer Output > Configure Displays.
  3. Set the output monitor to 1920×1280, choose Full Screen, set labels to Do Not Draw Labels, select Live, and choose the appropriate display output.
  4. Confirm the BoxCaster receives the intended Wirecast program output, then follow the BoxCast broadcast workflow for the hardware source.

These display settings are from BoxCast’s Wirecast + BoxCast instructions. Verify that the selected output and physical connection match your equipment.

Which connection method should you choose?

Method What you enter or need Best fit
RTMP BoxCast server URL and stream key; verify RTMP/RTMPS compatibility and use H.264 for third-party RTMP ingestion. A direct software connection when your BoxCast account provides an RTMP source.
SRT Address, port, stream ID, and passphrase when encryption is enabled; stereo audio at 48 kHz. A direct software connection when an SRT source is available and you can configure its required parameters.
BoxCaster A compatible secondary video output and BoxCaster hardware; configure Wirecast’s display output. Operators who already have the hardware or want the hardware encoder’s operational advantages described by BoxCast.

BoxCast’s setup pages do not provide a controlled benchmark establishing one method as best for every broadcaster. Your choice depends on source availability, protocol compatibility, the computer’s available encoding capacity, and whether you already have compatible BoxCaster hardware.

Troubleshooting Wirecast-to-BoxCast streams

  • The broadcast is not scheduled or does not go live: Confirm that you scheduled the broadcast in the BoxCast Dashboard and selected the source associated with that broadcast. Start Wirecast before the scheduled time and check the incoming signal.
  • RTMP connection fails: Recheck the server URL and stream key against the BoxCast source. If the URL is RTMPS, confirm that your Wirecast version supports it; if it does not, BoxCast advises using the RTMP form by removing the “s.”
  • There is no audio or it sounds wrong over SRT: Set Wirecast encoder audio to stereo at 48 kHz, as specified in BoxCast’s Wirecast SRT guide.
  • RTMP video is rejected or unavailable: Check the codec. BoxCast’s general RTMP encoder guidance says third-party RTMP ingestion supports H.264, not H.265/HEVC.
  • The BoxCaster shows the wrong picture or no picture: Confirm the chosen display output, selected Live output, full-screen configuration, and physical connection. Make sure the computer and encoder support the selected connection.
  • You are unsure how early to start: BoxCast’s Wirecast-specific guide recommends two to three minutes early. Its general RTMP guide recommends ten to fifteen minutes; these are recommendations in different contexts, not a single universal timing requirement. For this Wirecast pairing, use the Wirecast-specific guidance and allow time to check the signal.
