To make an interactive video, start with a video clip and decide what viewers should do: reveal information, follow a link, answer a question, or choose what happens next. Add timed interactions with an authoring tool such as H5P Interactive Video or Vimeo’s New Interactive editor, then preview and test every viewing path in the place you plan to publish it. If choices should change the next scene, build a branching scenario rather than adding clickable elements to a linear video.
Choose the interaction your video needs
Begin with the viewer’s job—not the tool’s feature list. An interaction should help viewers understand something, make a decision, or take a useful next step.
| Viewer action | Interaction pattern | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| See supporting detail | Hotspot or overlay | Reveals text, an image, media, or another explanatory element at a chosen point in the video. |
| Continue to a resource | Link or call to action | Lets the viewer open a relevant page or resource. |
| Check understanding | Quiz | Asks the viewer to answer a question during or after viewing. |
| Choose what happens next | Branching scenario | Uses the viewer’s choice to determine which scene or lesson segment appears next, potentially leading to different endings. |
A hotspot or quiz can sit on a linear timeline: viewers encounter interactions while the video proceeds along one sequence. Branching is different. It requires a planned tree of choices and outcomes. H5P documents Interactive Video for adding interactions to clips and a separate Branching Scenario content type for choice-driven content.
Plan the timeline or branching tree
For a linear interactive video
Sketch a simple timeline before editing. For each interaction, note when it appears, what the viewer sees, what action they can take, and what happens afterward. Put an interaction where it becomes useful—for example, a link beside a product explanation or a question after a concept has been introduced.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Keep labels and instructions short enough to understand at a glance.
- Make the action explicit: tell viewers whether to select an answer, open a link, or continue watching.
- Use a question only when its answer helps the viewer or serves a defined assessment purpose.
For a branching scenario
Draw the structure as a tree before adding media. Write down each choice, the segment it leads to, and the ending or next decision that follows. Check that every route has a destination; a choice that leads nowhere creates a broken viewing path.
Choose an authoring route
| Route | Documented capabilities | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| H5P Interactive Video | Add images, explanatory text, links, and quizzes to a video clip. | H5P describes itself as a plugin for existing publishing systems and says creators can create and store content on H5P.com. Confirm that your particular setup supports the publishing destination and any LMS requirements you have. |
| H5P Branching Scenario | Create a choice-driven content tree with multiple branches and endings. | Use it when a viewer’s choice should change the content shown next, rather than merely reveal an overlay on a fixed timeline. |
| Vimeo New Interactive editor | Add hotspots, overlays, and polls at points in a video; its New Interactive editor also supports quizzes. | The cited New Interactive and overlay features require Vimeo Enterprise. Interactive quizzes require Enterprise with New Interactive enabled. Vimeo says learner seats are needed for SCORM integration and LMS tracking. Confirm current access and integration requirements with Vimeo before choosing this route. |
These documented features do not establish a complete price comparison or a device-by-device compatibility comparison. Choose based on the interaction pattern, publishing and embedding destination, reporting needs, and the plan eligibility your project requires.

Add interactions and review their timing
- Open the video in your selected authoring tool. Choose an interactive-video content type for timed elements, or a branching-scenario type if choices determine what comes next.
- Place each element where it is useful. Add the hotspot, overlay, explanatory media, link, poll, or question at the relevant point in the clip.
- Write concise on-screen instructions. Make clear what the viewer can do and what will happen after the action.
- Set the response or destination. Connect links to the intended resource, define quiz answers as needed, and connect each branching choice to its intended next segment.
- Preview the video. Check that elements appear at the intended moments, remain readable, and do not obscure information the viewer needs.
For quizzes, decide how results must be collected before publishing. Vimeo’s documentation says full quiz-result visibility depends on an LMS that integrates with its supported standards; SCORM integration and LMS tracking require learner seats.
Test the complete viewing experience
Test the actual destination—such as the embedded video, publishing system, or learning environment—not only the authoring preview. The cited documentation does not establish universal behavior across devices or embeds, so verify the experience for the audience and setup you intend to serve.

Or let it run in the cloud
Interactive-video authoring adds elements for viewers to use while watching. If you also want to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock using uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that job: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not create interactive-video elements or stream from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on for the stream to continue.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
