In OBS Studio, go to Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS will lower the outgoing bitrate when your connection cannot keep up, which can reduce dropped frames—but the picture may lose quality while the bitrate is lower. This is a fallback for unstable network conditions, not a fix for the underlying connection problem.

First, confirm the problem is dropped frames

In OBS, network-related “Dropped frames” means the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS drops frames to compensate; if too many are dropped, the stream may disconnect. OBS says it is extremely unlikely that OBS Studio itself causes this type of network drop.

Do not confuse this with viewers reporting buffering. Viewers can have playback problems because of their own devices or internet connections even when your stream is reaching the platform without dropped frames. If your OBS connection is stable but viewers still buffer, consider whether your output settings are too demanding or whether the platform can provide viewers with transcoded playback options; dynamic bitrate alone may not address their playback conditions.

Enable dynamic bitrate in OBS

  1. In OBS Studio, open Settings.
  2. Select Advanced, then open the Network section.
  3. Enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta).
  4. Select Apply and OK, then monitor OBS and the platform’s stream-health indicators during a representative test.

When congestion occurs, OBS can lower the bitrate rather than continue sending at a rate the connection cannot sustain. The trade-off is less detail or more visible compression during the affected period. Keep diagnosing the connection: OBS recommends using this option only when the underlying problem cannot be resolved.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Work through the causes in order

1. Check the ingest server and route

In OBS, try a different ingest server if the service offers that option. A test on another streaming service can also help determine whether the problem is specific to one service or connection route. If a different server or service works, that is diagnostic evidence; it does not repair the route to your original destination.

2. Lower the configured bitrate to a stable level

Your bitrate must fit both your stable upload capacity and the destination platform’s limits. OBS gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for troubleshooting, not a guaranteed safe rate. Upload speed can vary, so leave headroom rather than setting the stream at the highest result from a speed test.

YouTube’s encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For 1080p at 60 fps, YouTube lists the following ingestion values:

Codec Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations for the stated resolution and frame rate, not universal targets. YouTube specifies CBR for RTMP/RTMPS encoder bitrate mode. Choose a rate your connection can sustain and stay within the limits for your destination and encoder.

3. Check OBS network settings and interfering software

  • On Windows, OBS suggests trying Network Optimizations and TCP pacing; some users report benefits, but they are not guaranteed fixes.
  • Leave Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
  • Try IPv4 Only as a diagnostic. If it makes no difference, return to IPv4 and IPv6.
  • Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, security software, bundled network-prioritization utility, or network-optimization program is interfering.
  • Check for outdated network drivers and obtain updates from your computer or motherboard manufacturer.

4. Test the physical connection

OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection. If possible, connect the streaming computer to the router with Ethernet and test again. If you need to replace a cable or move from Wi-Fi to wired networking, a Cat 6 cable is one possible option; OBS does not specify a cable category or guarantee that replacing a cable will solve the problem.

Restart the modem and router. A cable, network card, router, or another device along the connection path may be faulty. If you are unsure which component is responsible, consult your ISP before buying replacement equipment.

5. Contact your ISP if the problem persists

If the checks above do not stabilize the connection, give your ISP the times of the drops, the destination service, the bitrate you are using, and the results of your tests. The cause may involve a change on the ISP’s side or congestion along the route. YouTube also advises testing outbound internet connectivity and contacting the ISP when that test indicates a connection issue.

Test before the next live stream

  1. Run a test stream before going live to your audience.
  2. Include audio and movement similar to what the real stream will contain; a static screen may not reveal the same issues.
  3. Monitor stream health and read platform messages during the test and event.
  4. If the stream looks or sounds bad in the encoder, check source routing, encoder errors, CPU load, and the local recording. If it looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, investigate the outbound internet connection.

When choosing settings, balance four things: stable upload headroom, the platform’s bitrate recommendations and limits, resolution and frame rate, and codec. If the connection varies but you prefer continuity to maximum detail, dynamic bitrate can trade image quality for fewer dropped frames. If the connection is consistently inadequate, lower the baseline bitrate or resolve the network fault instead of relying on automatic reductions.

Or let it run in the cloud

Dynamic bitrate is for managing congestion on a stream sent from your encoder; it does not repair a poor internet route. If what you need is a YouTube channel playing uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home for the cloud stream to keep running.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required; it is one free day per account.

The monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live encoder or a fix for dropped frames in a live camera feed. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
