For a stream you broadcast yourself, a platform archive can be a second copy; it is not a substitute for a local backup, especially for long broadcasts.
Choose a free recording method
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio local recording | Saving a local file, making a backup, or controlling the recording you keep | Uses your computer’s resources and storage, and takes some initial setup. |
| Platform archive | Keeping a copy of your own broadcast when the platform supports archiving | Availability and retention depend on the platform. YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. |
| External storage | Recordings exceed available space on your current drive | Optional; you do not need to buy a drive if you have enough free storage. |
Record a live stream with OBS Studio
OBS Studio is free, open-source software available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Download it from the official OBS Project website. Its help portal says OBS has no watermark or usage limitations and is distributed under GPLv2. The release number and available installers can change, so check the download page for the current version.
- Add the source. In OBS, add or select the source containing the video and audio you intend to record. Depending on your setup, that may be a display, window, capture device, or another source. The exact choices vary by operating system and whether the stream is playing in a browser or coming from connected equipment.
- Choose the recording destination and output. Open Settings → Output and set a recording path, format, and quality appropriate for your available storage and intended use. OBS options and labels can vary by release and output mode. Twitch’s recording guide lists formats including FLV, MP4, MOV, MKV, TS, and M3U8 for the interface it describes; check the current OBS interface before relying on a particular format.
- Balance quality and file size. Higher recording quality creates larger files. OBS Help suggests trying Simple output mode and its recording presets; use a hardware encoder if one is available and suitable for your setup. If you need more control, consult OBS’s local recording guide.
- Make a short test. Record a brief sample, then play it back. Check that the picture is present and that system audio and any microphone audio you need are audible before relying on OBS for an important event. This check helps reveal source, audio, and destination mistakes early.
- Record the stream. In the OBS Controls dock, click Start Recording. Confirm recording is active, then click Stop Recording when finished and verify the saved file at the destination you chose.
A separate capture card is not established as necessary for an ordinary computer-screen or webcam setup. Extra hardware is relevant when your particular source setup needs it; YouTube’s encoder guidance describes gameplay, overlays, and external equipment such as microphones and cameras.
Use YouTube’s archive as a backup for your own broadcast
YouTube can automatically archive a live stream that is less than 12 hours long. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. In YouTube Studio, open Content → Live to manage your live-stream archive, including its visibility or deletion. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup because platform archiving is not guaranteed for longer streams.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This feature is for archiving your own broadcast; it is not permission to copy or reuse another creator’s stream. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Rights and consent can also depend on the content, rights holders, and applicable law, so there is no universal permission to record, redistribute, or publish someone else’s live stream.
Troubleshoot common recording problems
- The saved video is black or shows the wrong window: Confirm OBS is capturing the intended display, window, or device, and that the source is visible in the preview. Source options and behavior depend on the operating system and setup.
- The recording has no sound: Check that the intended audio source is included and that its meter responds in OBS. Use a short test playback to check system audio and microphone audio separately if both are needed.
- The file is missing or saved somewhere unexpected: Recheck the recording path under Settings → Output, then inspect that destination after stopping the recording.
- The recording stops or the drive runs out of space: Check available disk space before a long session. Higher-quality recordings consume more storage; choose a lower recording preset or use an external drive if the current disk does not have enough room.
- The file is too large or the computer struggles: Try OBS’s Simple output mode and recording presets, and consider a hardware encoder if available. Make another short test before the event to confirm the result meets your needs.
- YouTube did not create an archive: A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For future broadcasts, keep a local recording rather than relying only on the platform archive.
Twitch’s support page notes that Twitch cannot troubleshoot third-party applications such as OBS; for OBS-specific questions, use the OBS Help Portal.
