Unicast sends data to one recipient, multicast sends it to a selected group, and broadcast sends it to all hosts within the relevant network scope. The key difference is who is meant to receive the traffic. IPv4 supports all three patterns; IPv6 has no broadcast address type and uses multicast for functions that need to reach multiple nodes.

How unicast, multicast, and broadcast differ

Pattern Intended recipients How recipients are identified IPv4 and IPv6
Unicast One destination The destination address identifies an individual recipient. Used in both IPv4 and IPv6.
Multicast A selected group A group address represents the recipients; hosts can join or leave the group. IPv4 multicast addresses span 224.0.0.0–239.255.255.255. IPv6 multicast uses the FF00::/8 prefix.
Broadcast All hosts within the relevant broadcast scope The broadcast is addressed so that all hosts that hear it are recipients. IPv4 supports broadcast. IPv6 has no broadcast address type.

A simple analogy is a direct message to one person (unicast), a message to people who joined a group (multicast), and an announcement audible to everyone in a room (broadcast). It describes audience size, not every detail of how networks forward traffic.

What each delivery pattern does

Unicast: one sender to one recipient

A unicast packet is addressed to an individual destination. It is the familiar pattern in ordinary client-to-server communication: a client sends a request to a server, or a server sends a response to that client.

Multicast: one sender to group members

In IPv4, a multicast datagram is addressed to a host group represented by a multicast destination address. Hosts may join or leave the group over time. Multicast is therefore group-directed rather than a message to every host on the network.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Multicast delivery is best effort, like regular unicast IP delivery: a sender cannot assume every group member receives every datagram, or that datagrams arrive in order. See the RFC 1112 specification.

Broadcast: one sender to all hosts in scope

An IPv4 broadcast targets hosts in the applicable network scope. A host that hears the broadcast must at least process enough of it to determine what to do, which creates work even for hosts that are not ultimately interested. RFC 919 describes this per-host cost in its discussion of broadcasting Internet datagrams.

What changes between IPv4 and IPv6

IPv4 supports broadcast and multicast. Its multicast group addresses occupy 224.0.0.0–239.255.255.255, as specified in RFC 1112.

IPv6 has no broadcast addresses. The IPv6 addressing architecture defines unicast, anycast, and multicast address types, with FF00::/8 reserved for multicast; see RFC 4291. It is more precise to say that IPv6 has no broadcast address type and uses multicast for relevant one-to-many functions than to say simply that “broadcast is replaced by multicast.”

How multicast group membership is managed

IGMP is associated with managing IPv4 multicast group membership. IPv6 uses Multicast Listener Discovery (MLD) for multicast group management. These protocols concern group membership; they do not turn multicast into a guarantee that every packet reaches every member. Cloudflare provides an overview of IGMP.

Which pattern fits a given communication?

  • Choose unicast when a packet is meant for one identified destination.
  • Choose multicast when the intended recipients are members of a group, rather than every host in the scope. Do not treat group delivery as guaranteed or ordered.
  • Use broadcast only when the communication is intended for all hosts in its applicable scope. Its broad audience means hosts that hear it incur processing work, including hosts that may not need the information.

Don’t confuse network delivery with live-stream hosting

Unicast, multicast, and broadcast describe IP packet delivery patterns; they do not, by themselves, describe a service for keeping a video channel live. StreamNeo is a separate cloud service that loops uploaded videos to YouTube; learn more at StreamNeo. This distinction does not change which network delivery pattern a particular packet uses.
