If you want an open-source streaming setup with extensive customization, plugins, scripting, or listed Linux support, choose OBS Studio. If you prefer guided onboarding and built-in alerts, widgets, themes, and overlays, try Streamlabs Desktop. The name has changed: Streamlabs’ current official material calls its application Streamlabs Desktop, so this comparison is between Streamlabs Desktop and OBS Studio.

What is the difference between Streamlabs Desktop and OBS Studio?

Both applications let you assemble scenes and stream or record, but they emphasize different workflows. OBS Studio is described by the OBS Project as free and open-source software. Its documented features include multiple-source scenes, audio mixing and per-source filters, VST plugin support, customizable docks, transitions, hotkeys, Studio Mode, Multiview, and an API for plugins and Lua or Python scripts (OBS Studio features).

Streamlabs Desktop combines streaming or recording setup with Streamlabs creator tools. Streamlabs says standard alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays are free; Multistream and premium overlays are among the optional Ultra benefits (Streamlabs features and Ultra). “Easier” is a matter of fit: Streamlabs documents a guided setup, but the official sources do not establish that it is universally easier to use.

What matters OBS Studio Streamlabs Desktop
Cost and feature access Described by the OBS Project as free and open source. Streamlabs describes basic features as free; Multistream and premium overlays are identified as Ultra benefits. The reviewed official source does not establish a current Ultra price.
Built-in creator tools Core production features, with customization through supported plugins and scripts. Standard alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays are included in the described free feature set.
Extensibility and interface Customizable docks, plugin support, and Lua or Python scripting API are documented. Guided onboarding and bundled Streamlabs features are documented; the reviewed sources do not establish equivalent plugin or scripting capabilities.
Multistreaming The reviewed OBS feature material does not establish a built-in multistream service. Streamlabs identifies Multistream as requiring Ultra. Its help page names Twitch, Facebook Gaming, YouTube Live, Trovo, and custom RTMP destinations; confirm current destinations and terms.
Listed operating systems Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later, and Linux/Unix are listed on the OBS requirements page. Windows 10 or macOS 12 and later are listed on the Streamlabs requirements page reviewed.

Which one should you choose?

Choose OBS Studio for control and extensibility

  • You want free, open-source software.
  • You want to tailor your interface, use plugins, or automate with Lua or Python scripts.
  • You use Linux; the OBS Project requirements page lists Linux/Unix support.
  • You are comfortable configuring scenes and sources yourself rather than relying on a guided onboarding flow.

Choose Streamlabs Desktop for a guided start and bundled tools

  • You want a guided path through setup and adding camera, microphone, screen, and alerts.
  • You want Streamlabs’ standard alerts, widgets, tipping, themes, and overlays in the same creator workflow.
  • You need multistreaming or premium overlays and find the optional Ultra benefits worth evaluating. Check the current price and destination support before subscribing.

Streamlabs’ onboarding guide, dated July 22, 2026, also describes an option to import existing OBS Studio settings. Treat this as an available import path, not a guarantee that every setting, plugin, or integration will transfer (Streamlabs Desktop setup guide).

The OBS Project requirements page lists Windows 10 or 11, macOS 11 or later on Intel or Apple Silicon with an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU, and Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X Window System or Wayland. The page is dated August 25, 2021, so check the current release requirements before installing. OBS explicitly cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It notes that CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity (OBS Studio system requirements).

The Streamlabs requirements page reviewed lists Windows 10 or macOS 12 and later, with 8 GB RAM as a minimum and 16 GB or more among its recommendations; it also recommends an SSD and lists CPU and GPU families. The page states “3.6 Mbps or better for 720p at 30 fps for most platforms” as an upload-speed guideline. These are page-stated requirements and guidance, not guarantees for every workload or destination. Check the live page for current details (Streamlabs Desktop system requirements).

Neither product’s listed minimums establish which application will run better on your computer. Actual load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, content, other running software, and hardware. Test the settings and scenes you plan to use on the machine that will stream.

Compare your real workflow before committing

  1. Confirm the operating system. Check the current requirements for your OS and the application release you intend to install, especially if you rely on Linux support.
  2. List the features you need. Decide whether you need custom plugins or scripts, bundled alerts and overlays, or multistreaming. If multistreaming is essential, verify Streamlabs’ current Ultra terms and destination availability.
  3. Build a representative scene. Add the actual sources you expect to use, such as a screen capture, camera, microphone, alerts, and overlays. A simple scene and a complex scene can place different demands on the computer.
  4. Test your output settings. Try the intended encoder, resolution, and frame rate while recording or streaming privately where appropriate. Watch for dropped frames, encoding overload, audio problems, or unstable performance before relying on the setup live.
  5. Check migration needs. If moving from OBS Studio to Streamlabs Desktop, use the documented settings-import option if appropriate, then inspect and test scenes, sources, plugins, and integrations individually.

OBS Studio and Streamlabs Desktop are desktop production applications. If the goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
