Push VOD is a way to deliver prepared video or files toward a receiver for viewing later, rather than having the viewer request each item over the internet at playback time. The term is context-dependent: in broadcast discussions such as DVB-NIP, it refers to push-style delivery; in live-stream publishing, “push” often means sending a live feed to a platform. These are different workflows.

What “push VOD” means

In a broadcast-oriented setting, push VOD describes prepared content being ingested into a delivery system and sent toward receiver-side equipment or an application for later use. A viewer can then select available content to play. The Eutelsat DVB-NIP white paper discusses file ingest, server-side content-management and ingest systems, and client-side push-VOD applications. It does not establish one universal definition or a single required receiver. Eutelsat’s DVB-NIP white paper

The word “push” also appears in live-streaming terminology. Tencent Cloud describes push as a host sending local audio and video to cloud servers, while VOD refers to stored video that can be played later. That live publishing use of “push” is not the same as broadcast push VOD. Tencent Cloud’s guide

How a push-VOD workflow works

  1. Prepare and ingest the content. Video files or other content are added to a service’s content-management or ingest system.
  2. Deliver content toward the receiver. In a push-style deployment, the system distributes content toward receiver-side equipment or an application rather than relying solely on a viewer requesting each file at playback time.
  3. Make content available for later playback. A receiver, gateway, or application may store or otherwise expose the delivered content in a catalogue or playback interface.
  4. Select and play an item. The viewer chooses content that has been made available. The exact catalogue, storage behavior, update schedule, and connectivity needs depend on the deployment.

Push delivery can be useful where continuous connectivity is unavailable or inefficient, a motivation noted in the Eutelsat paper. This is not a guarantee of faster playback, uninterrupted service, or suitability for every network or installation. The paper does not prescribe one universal schedule, storage model, return channel, or receiver device.

Push VOD compared with HLS and MPEG-DASH

Conventional HTTP video-on-demand delivery follows a different path. A video is packaged into segments, with a playlist or manifest describing those segments. The files are hosted on a web server or CDN, and a compatible player requests them over HTTP when needed. Apple documents HLS for both prerecorded VOD and live broadcasts; it can offer multiple bitrate variants and adapt playback to network conditions. AWS describes the segment-and-manifest model for on-demand video delivered through CloudFront. Apple HLS overview · Apple HLS workflow · AWS CloudFront video documentation

MPEG-DASH is another HTTP-based adaptive-streaming approach that supports both live and on-demand use. Neither HLS nor DASH is a synonym for broadcast push VOD; they describe a distinct delivery approach. MPEG’s MPEG-DASH overview

Question Broadcast-style push VOD HTTP VOD such as HLS or DASH
How does content reach the viewer? Content is pushed toward receiver-side equipment or an application; the precise delivery path depends on the deployment. Eutelsat white paper A compatible player requests packaged segments and manifests over HTTP. Apple HLS · MPEG-DASH
When is the video viewed? Prepared content is intended for later use after it has been delivered or made available. Stored content is played on demand; HLS and DASH can also support live streaming.
Where is content stored, and how is the catalogue updated? Depends on the particular service and receiver; the cited DVB-NIP source does not define one universal behavior. Eutelsat white paper Segments and manifests are hosted for the player to request; the hosting and catalogue implementation depend on the service. AWS CloudFront documentation
What does the viewer need? A receiver, gateway, or application compatible with the specific deployment; no universal device is established by the cited source. Eutelsat white paper A player compatible with the chosen HTTP streaming format and access to the hosted media.

What to check before choosing a push-VOD service or device

  • Compatibility: confirm the exact service, broadcast standard and implementation supported by the receiver, gateway, or application. A device should not be assumed to work across all push-VOD deployments.
  • Ingest and catalogue: ask how files are added, how new content reaches receivers, and how the viewer browses what is available.
  • Storage and connectivity: establish where content is stored, whether and when the receiver needs a return internet connection, and what happens if content cannot be delivered.
  • Playback expectations: verify supported formats and the service’s actual playback behavior rather than assuming push delivery guarantees a particular quality or performance.

The Eutelsat paper offers architectural context but does not verify a consumer device readers can safely buy for every push-VOD system. Confirm compatibility with the specific operator or deployment before purchasing equipment.

Push VOD is not a YouTube 24/7 stream

Push VOD concerns delivery of prepared content for later playback in a receiver or application. Keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock is a different use case: it sends uploaded video as a continuous live stream. For that separate workflow, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud to YouTube; it is not a push-VOD receiver or a camera-based live service.
