Encoding turns raw audio, video, or subtitle data into a compressed digital stream. Transcoding takes an already encoded stream, decodes it, and encodes it again—often to change its format, size, or other properties. If you only change the container while copying the encoded streams unchanged, that is remuxing or stream copying, not transcoding.

Encoding, transcoding, and remuxing compared

Process What goes in What happens Typical reason
Encoding Raw audio, video, or subtitle frames or samples An encoder compresses the data into encoded streams Create a playable file or delivery stream
Transcoding An already encoded stream The stream is decoded and then encoded again; processing or filtering may happen in between Change codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or other properties for a target
Remuxing / stream copying Already encoded streams Encoded packets are copied into a different container without decoding and re-encoding Change packaging when the destination accepts the existing streams

FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding a stream and encoding it again. Its stream-copy option instead passes encoded packets from a demuxer to a muxer. See the FFmpeg documentation on transcoding and the FFmpeg documentation for the media-processing pipeline.

Codec and container are different things

A codec is the method used to encode and decode an audio or video stream. A container is the file or delivery package that holds one or more streams, such as video and audio. A filename extension usually indicates a container, not every codec inside it. For example, two files with the same container extension can hold different codecs, and a destination may accept one combination but not another.

Check the destination’s supported formats rather than assuming that changing an extension will make a file compatible. AWS MediaConvert’s supported input formats reference illustrates that codec support is associated with particular containers; its listed combinations apply to that service, not universally to all devices or software.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to encode, transcode, or copy streams

  1. Identify the target. Check the receiving device, platform, or delivery profile for accepted containers, codecs, and any required stream properties.
  2. Inspect the source. Find its container, video and audio codecs, and relevant properties such as resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  3. Copy or remux if the streams already fit. If the destination accepts the existing codecs and you do not need to alter the content, stream copy can change packaging without another encode. The tool and target container must support the combination.
  4. Transcode if something must change. Use transcoding when the codec is incompatible or when you need processing such as resizing, deinterlacing, overlays, audio resampling, or mixing. Choose an output codec and settings that suit the target.
  5. Check the result against the delivery requirements. Compare compatibility, output size or bitrate, quality, and processing time. A profile can impose specific constraints; Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices is one example.

Does transcoding reduce quality?

It can, but quality loss is not automatic or fixed. Many common codecs are lossy: they discard some information to reduce file size. Re-encoding lossy material can introduce further degradation, depending on the source, codec, settings, and processing. Lossless encoders also exist, though lossless output may be much larger.

If preserving the encoded streams is the priority and no content change is needed, stream copy avoids a new encoding generation. If a conversion or filter is required, select settings for the target and compare the output with the source; the right balance depends on the delivery need.

Stream copy in FFmpeg

FFmpeg’s stream-copy mode avoids the usual decode-and-encode path. For example, to copy both video and audio streams from an input into a different container, a command may look like this:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -c copy output.mp4

This works only if the output container can hold the input streams and the intended destination supports them. If it fails, changing the extension alone will not fix an incompatible codec. Consult the FFmpeg transcoding documentation for stream-copy details; exact options and outcomes depend on the installed FFmpeg build and the input.

Where StreamNeo fits—and where it does not

Encoding and transcoding describe media conversion; they are not the same as keeping a live stream online. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that playback in the cloud. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera, and it streams to YouTube only.

StreamNeo does not re-encode uploads: each slot streams video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. A slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo pricing for plan lengths and details. Start your free StreamNeo day.
