To record multiple audio sources at once as separate tracks, connect them to an audio interface or mixer that exposes enough simultaneous inputs, create one track per source in your recording software, assign each track to the right input, and record-enable every track before you press Record. The number of sockets or tracks printed on a mixer’s product page does not necessarily tell you how many independent channels it can send to your computer at the same time.
What you need to record multiple sources at once
- Enough simultaneous inputs: Each source you want isolated needs its own available input channel, or an equivalent independent digital route. Apple’s Logic Pro guide says multiple simultaneous input sources require an interface with multiple inputs.
- A compatible recording path: This can be a multichannel audio interface connected to a computer, a mixer that sends separate channels over USB, or a standalone recorder that captures multiple tracks to storage.
- Recording software and correct routing: In a DAW, create a track per source and assign each track to the corresponding hardware input.
- All tracks armed: Record-enable every track you want to capture. If only one track is armed, the other sources will not be recorded as separate tracks.
Before buying or setting up hardware, check its stated simultaneous input or USB-channel capacity. A device may have many mixer channels but send only a stereo mix—or just two channels—to the DAW.
Choose the recording setup that fits your sources
Computer and multichannel audio interface
This is the most direct route when you want separate editable tracks. Connect each microphone, instrument, or line-level source to an appropriate interface input. In the DAW, give each source its own track and select the matching interface input. Apple’s Logic Pro workflow specifically calls for choosing a different interface input for each source that should land on a separate track.
Count independent channels, not just physical connectors. Some sockets can serve different input types, and a mixer may combine several channels before sending audio to the computer. Verify the hardware’s simultaneous USB or DAW routing specification.

USB mixer with multichannel output
A USB mixer can simplify a setup that needs hands-on faders and routing, but USB connectivity alone does not guarantee that every mixer channel reaches the DAW independently. For example, Allen & Heath specifies two simultaneous DAW channels for the ZED Mini, 2-Bus, 4-Bus, and ZEDi-8, and four for the ZEDi-10 and ZEDi-10FX. HARMAN/Soundcraft lists the Signature 12 MTK as a 14-in/12-out USB interface and the Signature 22 MTK as 24-in/22-out, supporting up to 48 kHz, 24-bit recording. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance test results.
Confirm whether you need isolated channel feeds, a stereo mix, or both. If you need to adjust each microphone or instrument independently after recording, make sure the device actually sends those channels separately.
Multiple USB microphones on a Mac
macOS can combine audio devices into an Aggregate Device using Audio MIDI Setup. Apple documents using this approach with multiple USB microphones in GarageBand. After creating the aggregate device, select it in the recording software and assign the microphone inputs to separate tracks.

Standalone mixer-recorder
If you want to record without a computer, choose a model that records the individual tracks you need to an SD card or USB storage. Capabilities differ by model. RØDE documents multitrack recording to microSD or external USB storage on the RØDECaster Pro II and Duo, including pre-fader or post-fader capture choices. TASCAM lists a 12-track internal recorder for the Model 12, with WAV recording up to 24-bit/48 kHz and up to ten tracks playable simultaneously. TASCAM’s 2024 Pocket Guide lists up to 14 tracks recorded to SD, a 14-in/2-out USB interface, and four microphone inputs for the Mixcast 4.
Check the exact recording mode, storage requirements, and whether the recorder captures each intended source separately. A stated track count can include playback tracks or other functions, not only simultaneous live inputs.

How many inputs do you need?
Count every independent source you want to record at the same time. A stereo source generally occupies two channels if you want to retain its left and right sides separately; a mono microphone generally uses one. Also account for any computer return or other feed you need to capture.
| Sources to record | Typical independent channels needed | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Three mono microphones | 3 | At least three simultaneous inputs routed separately to the recorder or DAW. |
| Three mono microphones and one stereo keyboard | 5 | Three microphone inputs plus two channels for the keyboard’s stereo pair. |
| Several sources captured only as a finished stereo mix | 2 recording channels | The mixer must combine the sources as desired; the individual sources will not be independently editable afterward. |
These are channel-count examples, not product recommendations. Check the device’s routing documentation: physical input count, mixer channel count, USB channel count, and simultaneous recording track count can all differ.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Set up and record the tracks
- List the sources and connections. Write down what must be recorded together and whether each source is XLR, instrument, line-level, USB, or another digital input. Mark which sources must stay isolated.
- Connect the hardware and select its driver. In the DAW’s audio-device settings, select the interface or mixer and its supported driver. Confirm the DAW exposes the expected number of inputs.
- Create one track per independent source. Use mono tracks for mono microphones and sources. Use a stereo track when the source genuinely provides a stereo pair and you want to preserve it as stereo.
- Assign each track to its matching input. For example, route the first microphone track to Input 1 and the second to Input 2. Avoid assigning multiple tracks to the same input unless you intentionally want duplicate recordings.
- Show and activate Record Enable on every intended track. Focusrite’s GarageBand guide notes that GarageBand defaults to allowing one audio track to record simultaneously; its instructions explain exposing the Record Enable control and enabling it on each track. Logic Pro likewise requires each desired track to be record-enabled.
- Set input levels and monitoring. Speak or play at the loudest expected level and adjust gain so the signal is clear without clipping. Use headphones when microphones are open to reduce speaker feedback. For a mixer-recorder offering pre-fader or post-fader capture, choose whether you want the track before or after the channel fader and processing.
- Test the routing. Activate one source at a time and verify that the meter moves on the correct track, not another track or only the stereo master. Make a short test recording, then solo or play each track separately to check that all sources were captured as intended.
- Record the take. Once all intended tracks are armed and routing is confirmed, start recording. Watch the track meters during the take for missing signal or clipping.
Using multiple USB audio devices on Windows
Windows does not natively combine multiple USB audio interfaces in the same way macOS supports Aggregate Devices. RØDE’s Windows instructions describe using an ASIO driver such as ASIO4ALL for a two-RØDECaster example. That example does not establish compatibility for every combination of devices or DAWs. Check the current driver support for your hardware and recording software, and test that every device input appears and stays synchronized before relying on the setup.

Common problems and fixes
Only one source records
Check that every desired track is record-enabled and that the DAW is using a device with sufficient simultaneous inputs. GarageBand’s default simultaneous recording behavior may require enabling Record on each track. Also verify that the hardware sends individual channels rather than only a stereo mix.
Two tracks contain the same source
Inspect the input assignment on each track. Assign each source’s track to its own interface channel and check that the hardware has not routed the same bus to multiple DAW inputs.
A mixer has many channels, but the DAW sees only two
The mixer may support only a two-channel USB feed, or its USB routing may be configured to send a stereo bus rather than isolated channels. Check the manufacturer’s simultaneous DAW channel specification and USB routing options. Changing the selected record bus does not necessarily increase the number of channels the mixer can send; Allen & Heath notes that its smaller ZED models remain limited to two simultaneous DAW channels.

A USB microphone is missing from the DAW
Confirm the device is recognized by the operating system, selected in the DAW or aggregate device, and assigned to the correct track input. On a Mac Aggregate Device, check Audio MIDI Setup and then reselect the aggregate device in the recording software.
Recording works, but headphone monitoring does not
Recording input selection and audio output selection are separate routing choices. On GarageBand for Mac, Apple says output can use only one selected device; choose the intended output route or configure monitoring through the interface or mixer.
Audio clips or distorts
Reduce the input gain at the interface or mixer and check the track meters while the source is at its loudest expected level. A recording that clips at the input cannot be repaired simply by lowering the fader during playback.
Keep recording separate from livestreaming
StreamNeo is a YouTube service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos; it is not a multitrack audio recorder and does not capture live microphones or instruments. If your separate goal is to keep a YouTube stream playing from an uploaded recording, StreamNeo runs that stream in the cloud: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
For that distinct YouTube-streaming use case, start a free day with StreamNeo.
