Balanced audio connections are better at rejecting interference picked up along a cable; unbalanced connections are often perfectly adequate for short runs in a quiet setup. Neither type guarantees better sound or stream quality. The right choice depends on the ports on both devices, cable route, and whether you are actually hearing cable-borne noise.

What does balanced vs. unbalanced audio mean?

Balanced and unbalanced describe how an analog audio signal is carried and how the receiving equipment handles interference—not a digital streaming setting or a rating of sound quality.

Balanced connections

A balanced connection carries the signal on two conductors, with a separate shield. A compatible receiving circuit can reject noise shared by the two signal conductors. That makes balanced wiring useful for longer cable runs and electrically noisy surroundings when both connected devices support it. Focusrite Support summarizes the distinction: “Balanced cables are far better at rejecting interference noise than unbalanced cables.”

Unbalanced connections

An unbalanced connection uses one signal conductor, with ground or shield serving as the return. Interference picked up along the cable can therefore become part of the signal. Unbalanced connections are common and can work well when the cable is short, the environment is quiet, and the devices are designed for that connection.

Do I need balanced cables for streaming?

Not necessarily. If your microphone, instrument, interface, or other audio source sounds clean over a short cable run, replacing it with balanced wiring alone may make no audible difference. Balanced connections are most useful when both devices have compatible balanced ports and a long or electrically noisy cable route is causing interference.

  • Consider balanced wiring when both devices support it and you have a long run or hear interference that appears to be picked up along the cable.
  • Unbalanced may be adequate for a short connection in a quiet room, or when your equipment only has unbalanced ports.
  • Check the actual noise source. Cable pickup, a ground-loop issue, and noise from another part of the signal chain are different problems; a balanced cable is not a universal hum cure.

There is no universal maximum cable length at which unbalanced audio stops working. The practical result depends on the equipment, cable route, and electrical environment.

How to choose the right cable

  1. Check both devices. Read their manuals and inspect the port labels for balanced inputs and outputs. Focusrite advises: “You should use balanced cables when connecting to and from equipment with balanced inputs/outputs.”
  2. Identify the signal type at each port. Connector shape alone does not establish whether a connection is balanced, unbalanced, mono, or stereo.
  3. Match the cable to the ports and signal. Use the cable type specified by the device manuals; do not assume that a physically fitting plug makes a connection balanced.
  4. Consider the route and the symptom. If the connection is noisy, check whether interference is being picked up along the cable and whether a ground-loop or another source may be involved.

Is XLR better than TRS?

Not inherently. XLR is commonly used for balanced connections, and TRS can carry balanced mono audio. The connector does not determine sound quality by itself; the devices’ ports and the signal they are designed to carry matter.

TRS can also carry unbalanced stereo. Focusrite describes its headphone outputs as unbalanced stereo even though they use TRS jacks. A balanced stereo connection normally uses separate connections for left and right, rather than treating a single TRS headphone output as balanced stereo. For this reason, confirm the port’s function in the equipment manual before choosing an XLR or TRS cable.

Can I use a TRS cable with RCA or TS gear?

Only if the cable and connection suit the devices at both ends—and connecting equipment with an unbalanced port does not make that port balanced. TS and RCA connections are commonly unbalanced. A consumer device with RCA output therefore remains an unbalanced source unless suitable conversion equipment is used. Use a connection appropriate to the receiving input and check both manuals.

Interface to powered monitors

If both devices provide balanced line ports, use the matching cable type, such as TRS-to-TRS or TRS-to-XLR, as specified by their manuals.

Instrument to audio interface

Instrument outputs are generally unbalanced. Connect the instrument to an input designed to accept instrument level; a balanced cable cannot change the source into a balanced one.

Balanced output to an unbalanced input over a long run

For some setups, Roland’s older The Basics of Modern Recording describes running balanced cable for most of the distance, then placing a direct box or matching transformer near the unbalanced input. This is not a universal wiring prescription: confirm that the approach suits the exact devices and input.

Troubleshooting audio noise in a streaming setup

  • You hear interference on a long cable: check whether both devices have compatible balanced ports and, if so, use the matching balanced cable. Keep the cable route and nearby electrical equipment in mind.
  • A balanced cable does not solve the hum: investigate whether the cause is a ground loop or another part of the signal chain instead of assuming the cable is responsible.
  • A TRS cable fits, but the connection behaves unexpectedly: check whether the port is balanced mono or unbalanced stereo. TRS describes the connector, not a guaranteed signal type.
  • Your source has RCA or TS output: treat it as commonly unbalanced and use a connection compatible with the receiving input. A cable alone does not convert the source to balanced.
  • You need a long run into unbalanced equipment: check with the device manuals whether a direct box or matching transformer near the unbalanced input is appropriate.
