Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor live streaming, the broadcaster needs stable upload bandwidth that can sustain the encoder’s bitrate, plus headroom for network variation and other devices. As a practical starting point, Twitch recommends allowing about 30% above the configured stream bitrate: its example says a 6 Mbps stream needs at least 8 Mbps upload. YouTube’s recommended H.264 ingest bitrate is 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are platform ingest settings, not universal internet-plan requirements.
Upload speed is what the broadcaster needs
Your streaming device sends an encoded video and audio feed to the platform, so the relevant direction is upload. A viewer receiving that stream needs download speed instead. A fast download result does not establish that your connection can reliably broadcast.
The required upload depends chiefly on the platform, resolution, frame rate, and codec you select. It also depends on whether other devices or applications are using the connection. Treat the encoder bitrate as the feed’s target, then leave additional capacity for connection variation and other traffic.
Bitrate examples for YouTube and Twitch
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists recommended H.264 ingest bitrates for the settings below. These figures describe the encoder’s stream bitrate; they are not upload-plan recommendations. Twitch gives a separate rule of thumb for estimating upload headroom.

| Platform and settings | Platform guidance | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Allow upload headroom beyond the encoder target. |
| YouTube H.264, 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | The listed recommendation is higher than for 720p at 30 fps. |
| YouTube H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Using Twitch’s separate 30% heuristic as a rough illustration gives about 6.5 Mbps upload before rounding or accounting for other traffic. |
| YouTube H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Twitch’s separate example translates a 6 Mbps stream to at least 8 Mbps upload. |
| YouTube H.264, 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 42 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | High-resolution settings can require substantially more upload capacity. |
| YouTube H.264, 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 50 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Check YouTube’s current encoder table and selected codec before choosing this target. |
| Twitch example: configured stream bitrate of 6 Mbps | At least 8 Mbps upload in Twitch’s example | Twitch’s general practice is to allow configured bitrate plus 30%. |
YouTube’s guidance varies by codec as well as resolution and frame rate; the YouTube figures here are from its H.264 recommended column. Do not assume a bitrate listed for one platform or codec applies to another. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and Twitch’s streaming FAQ.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough?
It can be enough for some settings, but the number alone cannot answer the question. Compare your reliably available upload speed with your chosen encoder bitrate and allow headroom. For example, the YouTube H.264 recommendations above are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60; Twitch’s 30% rule of thumb would suggest roughly 6.5 Mbps and at least 8 Mbps, respectively, before accounting for rounding and concurrent use. A 10 Mbps result may therefore leave room for those examples if it is stable and not substantially shared, but it is not a guarantee of a clean stream.

For higher bitrates, such as YouTube’s listed 42 Mbps for H.264 4K at 30 fps or 50 Mbps at 60 fps, 10 Mbps upload would not match the listed encoder target. Choose a lower stream setting or use a connection with sufficient stable upload.
How to estimate the upload capacity you need
- Choose the platform and stream settings. Decide on resolution, frame rate, and codec, then consult the destination’s current encoder recommendations. YouTube’s figures are at its live encoder settings page.
- Set the encoder bitrate. Use a bitrate appropriate to those settings and the platform. The platform’s recommended ingest bitrate is the stream target, not an instruction to buy an internet plan with precisely that upload speed.
- Measure upload under realistic conditions. Run an upload-speed test more than once, including close to the time you expect to stream. Consider whether household devices, cloud backups, or other applications will use upload capacity at the same time.
- Leave headroom. Twitch’s general practice is stream bitrate plus 30%; its 6 Mbps example calls for at least 8 Mbps upload. This is a useful heuristic, not a guarantee or a universal platform rule.
- Run a representative test broadcast. Include audio and the movement typical of your content rather than testing only a static screen. Check stream health and stability before the event and monitor it while live.
Broadcaster upload versus viewer download
Do not use viewer download recommendations as the broadcaster’s upload target. Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance lists download speeds of 7–12 Mbps or higher for viewing at 1080p60, 3–6 Mbps or higher for 720p60, and 1.1–3 Mbps or higher for 480p. Those are viewer-side figures, not the upload bandwidth needed to send a broadcast. See Twitch’s playback troubleshooting guidance.

Troubleshooting a stream that stutters or drops frames
A stuttering or unstable broadcast is not proof by itself that your internet plan is too slow. Check the configured bitrate and actual connection behavior before changing plans or buying equipment. OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, covers connection issues and diagnostics.
- Configured bitrate is too high for available upload: lower the encoder bitrate or choose a less demanding resolution or frame rate, then test again.
- Upload is being used elsewhere: pause large uploads or backups and reduce competing device activity during the broadcast. Twitch notes that other devices using upload affect what remains available to stream.
- Speed varies near broadcast time: repeat an upload test under the conditions you expect during the event and leave more headroom if results fluctuate.
- Wi-Fi appears unstable: if your streaming device and router support wired networking, test an Ethernet connection. It can address local wireless instability, but it does not increase the upload capacity of your internet plan.
- Symptoms persist despite adequate measured upload: inspect the encoder’s connection and stream-health indicators and work through the platform or OBS troubleshooting steps; do not assume the advertised plan speed is the speed the stream is actually receiving.
