To stream with OBS Studio, build your video in a scene, connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream using its stream URL and key, then check the incoming preview in YouTube Live Control Room before clicking Go live. Start with OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard, test with your real audio and motion, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
What you need before streaming
You need OBS Studio installed, a YouTube channel with access to create a live stream, and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the settings you choose. OBS can combine sources such as a screen, game, webcam, images, and text; a dedicated camera, microphone, capture card, or hardware encoder is not required for every setup. YouTube says you can begin with equipment you already have.
OBS performance depends on the computer, encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. Meeting OBS’s baseline system requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream reliably. See the OBS Studio system requirements and test your own setup before an event.
Set up OBS and build a scene
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
- Download OBS Studio for your operating system from the official OBS Project site and install it.
- On first launch, follow the Auto-Configuration Wizard. If it does not open automatically, select Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard.
- Choose the option that matches your intended use and follow the prompts. The wizard takes your use, computer resources, and network conditions into account. Treat its output as a starting point, not a guarantee; test with your intended sources and stream conditions.
Add the sources viewers should see
OBS organizes a broadcast into scenes, each of which can contain multiple sources. Select the scene, then use the plus button in the Sources dock to add the relevant inputs. Source names and availability may vary by operating system and OBS build.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Talking-head stream: Add a webcam or video capture device if you want to appear on camera.
- Presentation or tutorial: Add a display or window capture, then add a camera source if useful.
- Gameplay: Add game capture where available, or use an appropriate display/window capture; add a camera source only if wanted.
- Graphics: Add image or text sources for titles and labels.
Check the preview after adding each source. Resize and position it as needed, and inspect the source list: a source higher in the order can cover one below it. Confirm that captures show the intended window or screen and do not reveal private material.
Check microphone and desktop audio
OBS’s default setup captures desktop audio and a microphone input. In the Audio Mixer, speak and play any sound that should reach viewers; the relevant meters should move. If they do not, open Settings → Audio and select the correct devices. A moving meter confirms input activity, but not that the mix sounds right or that viewers will hear it as intended.

Make a recording or run a private or unlisted test and listen back. Check for muted devices, missing desktop sound, excessive levels, or audio routed to the wrong input. A camera and microphone are optional sources, not prerequisites for every kind of stream.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or select an encoder stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key identifies where your encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Select the YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, enter the URL in the server field and the key in the stream-key field.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. If it may have been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and replace the saved key in OBS.
- In OBS, start sending the stream. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room, then check both picture and sound.
- When the preview and stream health look right, click Go live in YouTube. At the end, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from OBS as the interface directs.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, when the encoder supports it. Use the current URL shown in Live Control Room and the available OBS preset rather than copying a server address from an unrelated tutorial. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder and its stream-key guidance.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
There is no single best OBS output setting for every computer and connection. Higher resolution and frame rate generally increase encoding load and the bandwidth needed. OBS notes that 60 fps can demand more from a system than 30 fps. Use the wizard’s suggestion, then choose a resolution and frame rate your equipment and upload connection can sustain in a real test.
YouTube Help’s encoder settings page, retrieved October 3, 2026 (publication year not displayed), gives the following recommended H.264 video bitrates. These are recommendations for the listed combinations, not guarantees, and other codecs have different values.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Check YouTube’s encoder settings for its current recommendations across H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. The page lists frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and specifies a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Do not assume every codec or setting is available with every computer, hardware encoder, or OBS build.
Run an upload-speed test and leave bandwidth headroom instead of setting OBS to consume the entire measured upload rate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% of upload bandwidth available as room; this is headroom for reliability, not extra stream bitrate. Other people and devices sharing the network can also reduce the capacity available to the streaming computer. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test before the event and monitor the broadcast
- Run a test that uses the same scenes, movement, microphone, and desktop audio planned for the event.
- Confirm that OBS is sending and that the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Inspect the preview for framing, overlays, and audio. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages rather than relying only on OBS’s indication that it has started.
- Check that the event is accessible from the channel or watch page as intended, and set up ahead of the scheduled start.
- During the event, keep an eye on audio, video, and stream health so you can respond if the feed degrades.
Fix common OBS-to-YouTube problems
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Confirm that OBS has the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, and that both were copied into the correct fields. If the key was exposed, reset it in YouTube and update OBS. |
| OBS appears to send, but the YouTube preview is missing or wrong | Wait for the incoming preview, then recheck the selected YouTube stream, server URL, key, and OBS scene/source visibility. Do not click Go live until the intended feed is visible. |
| Microphone or desktop audio is missing | Watch the Audio Mixer while speaking or playing audio. If the meter is inactive, check device selection under Settings → Audio; make a test recording and listen back to confirm routing. |
| Video stutters or the computer struggles | Reduce scene complexity, then try a lower resolution or frame rate and test again. Encoding method, output settings, and scene load all affect performance; lowering settings is a diagnostic step, not a guaranteed cure. |
| Connection becomes unstable | Check actual upload capacity during the stream conditions, preserve YouTube’s recommended bandwidth headroom, and consider whether other devices are using the shared connection. Test again at a bitrate the connection can sustain. |
Keep copyright and channel rules in view
OBS sends your chosen sources to YouTube; it does not grant rights to the music, video, game footage, or other material in them. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and monetization policies before broadcasting. A successful technical connection does not establish that a stream complies with platform rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, rather than to broadcast a live camera or compose a live OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home; it plays uploaded videos, not camera footage, and sends to YouTube only.
- No computer or home connection needs to stay on.
- Each slot streams uploaded material as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Plans can be bought by day, week, month, six months, or year and cancelled any time; UPI and cards are available in India, while card checkout is available worldwide.
- Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. The product is the same across plans; only billing length changes.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. For five or more slots, contact StreamNeo support. To try the free day, create a StreamNeo account.
