To convert MKV to MP4 without re-encoding, use FFmpeg’s streamcopy mode: ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4. This changes the container, not the codecs. It is fast and avoids re-encoding quality loss, but it can fail if a stream cannot be muxed into MP4, and the resulting file may still use codecs your device cannot play.

First decide whether you need to remux or re-encode

MKV and MP4 are containers: they package video, audio, subtitles, and other streams. A file’s extension does not tell you which codecs those streams use. Renaming video.mkv to video.mp4 does not convert it.

If your target player supports the codecs already in the MKV, remuxing is usually the simplest option. FFmpeg’s -c copy copies selected streams without decoding and encoding them. If a stream is incompatible with MP4 or the intended player, you may need to convert that stream instead. FFmpeg describes streamcopy as useful for changing a container format without re-encoding. Read the FFmpeg documentation.

Method Use it when Trade-off
Remux with -c copy The target accepts the existing codecs and you want a quick container change. No re-encoding quality loss, but unsupported streams can prevent MP4 output or playback.
Transcode one or more streams A video, audio, or subtitle stream is incompatible with the target container or player. Selected streams must be decoded and encoded, which takes longer. Other compatible streams can still be copied.

Convert MKV to MP4 with FFmpeg

1. Install or open FFmpeg

Use an FFmpeg build available for your operating system, then open a terminal or command prompt. The commands below assume FFmpeg is on your command path. Replace the example filenames with your own; quote paths that contain spaces.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

2. Remux all requested streams

Run:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c copy output.mp4

-i input.mkv identifies the input, -map 0 requests all input streams, and -c copy copies them without re-encoding. Explicit mapping matters: FFmpeg’s normal automatic selection generally chooses one stream of each acceptable type, so it may omit additional audio or subtitle tracks you wanted. The -map 0 command can also fail if the input contains a stream that MP4 cannot accept. See the FFmpeg manual’s explanation of stream mapping and streamcopy.

3. Check the output, not just the command result

Confirm that output.mp4 was created, then test it in the application or device you intend to use. Check the audio languages, subtitle tracks, chapters, or other content you need. A successful mux does not prove every track was retained as intended or that a particular player supports the codecs inside.

Keep particular audio and subtitle tracks

If you do not want every stream, map the ones you do want explicitly. FFmpeg’s -map option controls which input streams are included and disables default mappings when used. The manual illustrates selecting a particular stream with -map 0:1; stream indexes depend on the actual input, so inspect your file before choosing indexes. FFmpeg’s manual covers mapping syntax.

Mapping every stream with -map 0 is a useful starting point when preserving tracks matters, but it does not guarantee all stream types can be placed in MP4. Attachments and data streams also need special attention; do not assume they will transfer or be usable in the output. If retaining a track is essential, check that it is present in the finished file and test it in the target player.

Subtitles may need conversion

Subtitle compatibility depends on the subtitle format and the muxer. In a January 2025 FFmpeg-user mailing-list discussion, a SubRip subtitle stream triggered an MP4 muxing error, and a reply suggested -c:s mov_text for that case. For example, if that is appropriate for your file and target, try:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s mov_text output.mp4

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a? -c:v libx264 -c:a copy output.mp4

This example selects the first video stream, includes audio streams if present, encodes video with libx264, and copies audio. Choose an encoder and settings based on the documented codec support of your target player and the source material; there is no universally correct preset or guaranteed output for every file. If audio or subtitles are the incompatible streams, the command needs to be adjusted for those streams rather than blindly re-encoding video. FFmpeg’s manual includes examples of combining encoding and streamcopy. Consult the FFmpeg documentation.

Re-encoding takes longer than streamcopy and is a different operation: the selected stream is decoded and encoded again. Do not assume a particular file size, quality, or metadata outcome without checking the source, settings, output, and target device.

Check codec support on the target device

An MP4 can be structurally valid and still fail on a TV, phone, editor, or other player because that device does not support the video or audio codec inside. A January 2025 FFmpeg-user thread described a TV rejecting an output and discussed codec support as a likely factor; that report illustrates a possibility, not a rule for every TV. Check the target device’s codec requirements and match the streams accordingly.

Common problems and fixes

  • The file was renamed, but it still will not play: changing the extension does not change the container or codecs. Run an actual FFmpeg conversion and check which codecs the player supports.
  • The all-stream command errors during muxing: a stream may not be supported in MP4. Identify the incompatible stream, omit it only if you do not need it, or convert that stream while copying compatible ones.
  • An audio language or subtitle is missing: automatic stream selection may have chosen only one stream. Map the desired streams explicitly, then inspect and play the output.
  • Subtitle muxing fails: subtitle format may be the issue. The mov_text suggestion applies to a particular SubRip-to-MP4 case; other formats may need a different approach.
  • The MP4 exists but a device rejects it: verify the codecs against that device’s documented support. The MP4 extension alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

Converting an MKV file is separate from keeping a YouTube channel live. It is not an MKV-to-MP4 converter.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud.
  • Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot.
  • It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
