A disconnect alone does not prove that Hetzner is at fault. To find the cause, compare the timestamp and message in YouTube Live Control Room with your encoder logs, then test the server’s outbound connection to the YouTube ingest endpoint. The likely fault area depends on what those checks show: it may be the encoder or stream settings, an outbound firewall rule, the route to YouTube, or a host-level problem. Without your server type, encoder, protocol, error message, and logs, the root cause cannot be identified.

First determine what is actually disconnecting

Separate a sender-side disconnect from a viewer playback interruption. Check whether the encoder says it lost its connection to YouTube, or whether viewers report interruptions while the encoder still appears connected. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance distinguishes viewer-side errors from problems that affect many viewers across different networks; the latter can point back to the encoder.

Check YouTube’s stream health during the event

Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and note its stream-health status and any specific status or error message. Record the time in UTC when the message appears. YouTube’s live metrics provide status information, but a status message is evidence to investigate—not, by itself, proof of a Hetzner network problem.

Match the timestamp against the sender

At the same time, inspect the encoder’s output and the service or container logs if the encoder runs under a service manager or container. Check for a reported disconnect, process restart, interface event, or resource warning at that moment. YouTube recommends checking encoder CPU load when diagnosing stream quality and trying another encoder if no problem is visible in the current one. Do not assume CPU or memory pressure caused the failure unless the logs or monitoring support that conclusion.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the protocol, ingest URL, and error message

Use the endpoint and protocol shown for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Do not rely on an old URL or a default copied from another setup. In particular, RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable: RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, and its URL must use the RTMPS host and protocol.

If the error mentions an invalid SSL certificate

Confirm that the encoder is configured with the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, including the RTMPS host. YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance says to check both protocol and host; if the encoder allows a port to be specified, port 443 is a documented troubleshooting step.

If the error says “connection timed out”

Verify the URL and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS if the stream is configured to use it. Then check whether the server can reach the actual ingest host and port. These RTMPS checks apply when the stream uses RTMPS and the observed error matches; they are not a diagnosis for every disconnect.

Inspect outbound firewall rules on the server

If you are using a Hetzner Cloud server, inspect its Cloud Firewall as well as the operating system’s firewall. Hetzner documents that when no outbound Cloud Firewall rules are defined, outbound traffic is allowed. Once one or more outbound rules are defined, unmatched outbound traffic is implicitly denied. Check that the actual rules allow the connection your configured YouTube ingest endpoint requires.

This documented behavior is for Hetzner Cloud Firewalls. Do not assume it describes a dedicated server’s Robot firewall; check the firewall product and rules that apply to your server. Also verify host-level firewall rules, since a Cloud Firewall inspection alone does not establish that the operating system permits the connection.

Test the route and outbound capacity from the Hetzner host

If the encoder appears healthy, test the outbound connection from the server to the ingest host and port shown by YouTube. YouTube recommends checking outbound connection strength when the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder. Run the test over a period that includes the time a disconnect normally occurs and keep its results with the event timestamp. A single speed test cannot establish that a connection is stable over time.

Interpret packet-loss evidence carefully

If you suspect packet loss, collect MTR or WinMTR traces in both directions. Hetzner asks for at least 200 packets for packet-loss reports. Loss shown at an intermediate hop but not at the destination may mean that a router is ignoring or limiting ICMP responses; intermediate-hop loss alone does not establish an end-to-end problem. Loss that continues through to the destination is more relevant and warrants investigation.

For a Hetzner support request, attach the traces and select the affected server and appropriate public- or private-network issue category in the Hetzner Console. Hetzner’s network guidance says general statements such as “my ping is bad” are not enough for analysis. If the evidence points to a fault outside Hetzner’s network, contact the responsible network provider as well.

Make sure stream settings fit sustained capacity

Choose a bitrate that the actual outbound connection can sustain reliably; there is no universal bitrate that can be recommended without knowing your resolution, frame rate, codec settings, and measured capacity. YouTube advises testing before the stream, using representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health while live. A setting that works for a quiet test image may not be representative of the content you intend to stream.

  • YouTube recommends a keyframe interval of 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Compare the chosen bitrate with sustained outbound capacity, not only a one-time speed-test result.
  • When testing, include the type of movement and audio present in the real stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health status.

Use the failure pattern to narrow the cause

What you observe What to check next
Viewers report interruptions, but the encoder remains connected Use YouTube’s stream-health messages to distinguish a viewer playback issue from a sender-side failure; do not assume the Hetzner server disconnected.
The encoder reports a disconnect at the same time as YouTube Correlate the error timestamp with encoder and host logs, then test outbound connectivity to the configured ingest endpoint.
The failure occurs at startup or reports an SSL or timeout error with RTMPS Check that the URL is the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, that the host and protocol are correct, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. For an SSL error, check port 443 if the encoder allows it.
The server can reach the endpoint inconsistently or traces show loss through the destination Preserve timed connectivity results and bidirectional MTR or WinMTR output, then escalate with the evidence.
The server is a Hetzner Cloud server with outbound rules configured Check whether the rules permit the configured destination and whether any unmatched traffic is being denied.

These patterns help locate a fault domain; no one pattern establishes the root cause without the corresponding logs, configuration, or network evidence.

What to include when escalating

For a useful support request, gather the evidence before changing several settings at once. Include:

  • The affected server identifier and whether it is a Hetzner Cloud or dedicated server.
  • The disconnect time in UTC, YouTube’s stream-health status and exact message, and the matching encoder log lines.
  • The configured ingest protocol, host, and port, without sharing your stream key.
  • Relevant Cloud Firewall and operating-system firewall rules, if applicable.
  • Outbound test results from the server and bidirectional MTR or WinMTR traces if packet loss is suspected.
  • Relevant CPU, memory, process-restart, and network-interface events around the same timestamp.

Do not post a stream key in a public support thread. If the evidence identifies a connection problem beyond Hetzner’s network, raise it with the network provider responsible for that part of the route.
