Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf OBS says it is streaming but YouTube Studio says the stream is offline, check the correct event in YouTube’s Live Control Room first. OBS’s local status does not prove that YouTube has received the feed—or that a scheduled event has been taken live. Look for YouTube’s preview, verify the event’s stream URL and key in OBS, then work through encoder and network checks.
1. Open the correct YouTube event
- In YouTube Studio, select Go Live and open the current or scheduled stream you intend to broadcast. Confirm that you are not looking at another event or an older event with different settings.
- If the stream is scheduled, start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Then click Go live there. Sending a feed to YouTube does not necessarily make a scheduled event live to viewers. See YouTube’s encoder-streaming instructions.
2. Check whether YouTube is receiving the feed
In the selected event’s Live Control Room, look for the video preview and stream-health messages. The preview is a better sign of receipt than OBS’s local “streaming” indicator. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reading messages shown during the event; see YouTube’s stream-health guidance.
- No preview: check the selected event, stream URL, stream key, OBS connection, encoder output, and outbound network connection.
- Preview present, but viewers see the event as offline: confirm that you clicked Go live for a scheduled event, then check that event’s watch page.
- Preview present but unstable: use the stream-health messages to guide encoder and network checks.
3. Match OBS’s destination and key to the event
In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Compare the server or stream URL and stream key there with the values shown for the event currently open in Live Control Room. The stream key is a credential that lets YouTube accept the encoder feed; do not share or publish it. YouTube explains stream keys in its encoder setup guidance.
- Make sure the intended YouTube event is selected before copying its values.
- If the key is stale, invalid, reset, or uncertain, copy the current key and URL from that event and update OBS.
- Apply the settings and start the OBS stream again. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the preview.
4. Check OBS’s picture, sound, and encoder
Confirm OBS is sending the intended scene and that its audio and video sources are active. Check OBS for encoder errors and unusually high CPU load. If the image or sound is wrong in OBS itself, fix the source or encoder problem before treating the issue as a YouTube status problem. YouTube also advises checking the stream directly in the encoder; see its streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Compare bitrate with YouTube’s guidance
For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube’s published guidance gives 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. Those figures are specific to that codec and format, not universal settings; recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Check the applicable row in YouTube’s encoder settings table, and treat its recommendations as guidance rather than a guarantee that a particular setup will work.
5. Investigate the network if OBS drops frames or disconnects
OBS identifies dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as signs of a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. Test whether your outbound upload connection can sustain the stream, and check whether other users or applications are consuming bandwidth or whether VPN or security software is interfering. OBS’s dropped-frames guidance covers network troubleshooting.

- YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom for a stream. Total bitrate needs to fit within available upload bandwidth; where applicable, allow room for both primary and backup streams. The 20% figure is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee of stability. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- If the connection cannot sustain the current bitrate, lower OBS’s video bitrate or try another available ingest server. Lowering bitrate may reduce picture quality.
- If testing points to a persistent connection problem, YouTube advises testing the outbound connection and contacting your internet service provider. See YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance.
A USB Ethernet adapter is worth considering only if your computer has no Ethernet port and diagnostics point to Wi-Fi or network instability. It will not correct a wrong event, URL, key, or missing Go live action.
6. Confirm recovery from the viewer’s side
Recovery is confirmed when the correct event shows a preview and healthy status in Live Control Room and the event is accessible from the channel or its watch page. Do not rely only on OBS attempting to send data. YouTube’s preparation guidance also recommends checking the local archive and confirming that its file size is growing; see YouTube’s stream preparation guidance.
