Repeat the test while charging and on a reliable network. These checks can help isolate the cause, but no setting guarantees screen-off streaming on every Android phone.
What may stop the stream when Android sleeps?
Android’s Doze mode is one possible cause, not a diagnosis of every CameraFi Live interruption. Android says a device may enter Doze when it is unplugged, stationary, and screen-off. In Doze, Android restricts network access and ignores wake locks, which can affect a live connection. Turning on the screen, moving the phone, or connecting a charger exits Doze and resumes normal app activity. Android’s Doze and App Standby guidance describes this platform behavior.
Other variables matter too: whether the app remains in the foreground, the phone maker’s power-management controls, the Android version, the broadcast mode, the destination, and network stability. A stream that fails after the screen goes dark is not, by itself, proof that Doze caused it.
Test the conditions in a controlled order
- Establish a baseline with the screen awake. Open CameraFi Live, choose camera or screen mode, select the destination, and start a short stream. Confirm that it is live using the destination’s preview or a second device. CameraFi’s beginner guide covers selecting a mode and platform; available settings vary by platform.
- Test screen timeout separately from locking. Temporarily extend the display timeout and leave CameraFi Live visible. Check whether the broadcast continues while the screen is awake, then note what happens when the display turns off or the phone locks. Change one condition at a time so you can identify which transition precedes the interruption.
- Inspect CameraFi Live’s battery controls. In Android Settings, open the app information page for CameraFi Live and look for battery usage, background usage, or a similarly named power option. If your phone offers a less restrictive setting, try it and repeat the short test. Menu names and paths vary by Android version and manufacturer; there is no universal label or guaranteed switch.
- Repeat while connected to power. Run another short test with the phone charging and on reliable connectivity. Android documents that connecting a charger exits Doze. If charging changes the result, that is useful diagnostic evidence, not proof of the cause or a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming.
- Keep a record if the stream still stops. Note the phone model, Android version, CameraFi Live version, camera or screen mode, destination, whether the app was visible or backgrounded, whether the screen was locked, charging status, and network conditions. Understand Android’s background limits
Changing battery settings cannot override every Android restriction. Android’s developer guidance says that, on Android 11 and later, apps targeting Android 11 or higher must declare camera and microphone foreground-service types to access those resources through a foreground service. It also documents limits on starting a foreground service from the background and accessing the camera or microphone that way. This is developer-facing guidance, not evidence of CameraFi Live’s implementation, and it does not provide users with a setting that makes background camera access unconditional. CameraFi describes its app as supporting live broadcast and recording, with camera and screen modes and multiple destination choices. Its FAQ says screen broadcasting is supported only on Android as of December 20, 2024, and discusses restrictions on screen capture and internal audio. Those statements do not promise that a broadcast continues with the display off. The CameraFi FAQ and its beginner guide, dated December 27, 2024, do not document a universal screen-off continuity switch.
Avoid risky or misleading fixes
- Do not assume “disable battery optimization” is a universal solution. Phone makers add their own power controls, and labels and effects differ. Test any less restrictive per-app option on your specific phone.
- Do not install a wake-lock app expecting it to defeat Doze. Android says wake locks can quickly drain a device battery and advises using them only when another option does not meet the need. Its guidance recommends considering whether an app has a foreground service and genuinely needs the device kept awake with the screen off. See Android’s guidance on keeping a device awake.
- Do not treat a power bank as a software fix. Charging exits Doze and can help with a stream away from an outlet, but it will not resolve a network, overheating, app, or manufacturer-specific problem. Check the phone’s connector and supported charging standard before buying a power bank.
