To use less cellular data while streaming to YouTube from Streamlabs Mobile, lower the stream’s max bitrate first. If the picture becomes too soft or unstable, adjust resolution or frame rate as well. Streamlabs recommends 720p at 30 FPS as a general starting point for bitrate tuning—not a universal low-data preset—and the best balance depends on your scene, phone, app version, and upload connection.
Which settings reduce data use?
Bitrate is the amount of video data sent each second, so lowering the max bitrate is the most direct way to reduce the stream’s video-data rate. A lower bitrate can mean less image detail, especially during fast motion, but it also reduces the bandwidth the stream needs. Streamlabs explains how bitrate choices relate to resolution, frame rate, and upload speed in its bitrate guidance.
Resolution and frame rate affect the quality-and-bitrate balance. Lower either if reducing bitrate alone does not produce an acceptable picture or a stable stream. The options available can vary by phone and app version; Streamlabs lists output resolution, expected frame rate, and max bitrate among the mobile streaming settings. - Max bitrate: Lower it to reduce the video data rate. Watch for loss of detail, blockiness, or smearing in motion.
- Resolution: Lower it if the bitrate needed for your current output is too high or the image quality suffers at a reduced bitrate.
- Frame rate: Lower it if you can accept less fluid motion. This can make a lower-bitrate stream look more manageable, depending on what you are filming.
Where to change Streamlabs Mobile settings
- Connect YouTube: In Streamlabs Mobile’s account or platform settings, connect your YouTube account. Streamlabs’ YouTube mobile setup guide covers connecting the platform and starting a mobile broadcast.
- Open Streaming Settings: Open the app’s main menu and choose Streaming Settings. The exact menu presentation and available choices can depend on the app version and device.
- Reduce max bitrate: Choose a lower max bitrate than your current setting, then save or apply the change if the app presents that option.
- Adjust output if needed: If the stream still needs too much bandwidth or looks poor at the lower bitrate, reduce output resolution or frame rate where those controls are available.
- Test a broadcast: Stream a representative scene and check both picture quality and stability on the cellular connection you plan to use. Change one setting at a time so you can tell what helped.
A practical starting point—not a guaranteed preset
Streamlabs’ general bitrate guidance suggests beginning around 720p at 30 FPS and increasing only while monitoring performance. Its examples include 3,000 Kbps for 720p/30 FPS, 4,500 Kbps for 720p/60 FPS, 4,500 Kbps for 1080p/30 FPS, and 6,000 Kbps for 1080p/60 FPS. These are general guidance figures, not a low-data promise or settings guaranteed to appear on every phone. A stream with fast movement may need more bitrate to look clean than a mostly static scene.

Start at a conservative setting your app supports, then assess the result on your actual connection. If it is stable and the picture has enough detail, keep it. If motion looks poor, raise bitrate or reduce the demands of the output by lowering resolution or frame rate. If the stream stalls or drops frames, the connection may not be sustaining the selected bitrate; lower it and test again.
How much cellular data will a stream use?
The sources cited here do not publish a verified per-hour data figure for Streamlabs Mobile streaming to YouTube at particular presets. Actual use depends on the bitrate sent over time, along with connection and stream overhead, so a single GB-per-hour figure would not be reliable for every broadcast. A lower video bitrate reduces the stream’s data rate, but it does not make the upload free of data use. Check your carrier’s usage meter during a representative test if you need to manage a plan limit.

Common problems and fixes
- The picture becomes blocky or smeared: The bitrate may be too low for the scene, particularly when there is rapid motion. Increase bitrate in a small step or reduce resolution or frame rate, then review the broadcast again.
- The stream lags, buffers, or drops frames: The connection may not sustain the chosen bitrate. Lower max bitrate and test again on the network you will actually use; upload speed, resolution, and frame rate all matter.
- You cannot find a setting or value: The controls and options can differ by app version and device. Check the current Streaming Settings menu and Streamlabs’ mobile capability information rather than assuming every phone exposes identical choices.
- You want to enable Network Boost to save data: Streamlabs describes Network Boost as a Streamlabs Ultra feature intended to improve reliability on unpredictable mobile connections. It is not described as a data-reduction feature, so do not treat it as a substitute for lowering bitrate.
