To repeat a file continuously in AWS Elemental MediaLive, set the input attachment’s Source end behavior to LOOP. MediaLive restarts ingesting the file from its beginning when it reaches the end. Then configure a separate RTMP output group with the YouTube Live stream URL and stream key; use RTMPS when available and compatible.
What you need before configuring the loop
- A MediaLive file input. AWS lists MP4 files with an
.mp4extension and transport stream files with.tsor.m2tsextensions as VOD input types. AWS lists the supported source types. - A MediaLive channel with that input attached.
- A YouTube Live event and its stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password and do not expose it.
The exact codec and bitrate fields available depend on the MediaLive channel configuration. Verify that the chosen output profile matches the YouTube event before starting.
Set the MediaLive file input to repeat
- Open the MediaLive channel and go to Input attachments.
- Open the relevant file input attachment’s general settings.
- Set Source end behavior to LOOP, then save the channel configuration.
- Start the channel and confirm that the output reaches YouTube. At the end of the file, MediaLive should begin ingesting it again from the beginning.
This is the control for repeating a completed file. Input-loss handling is for responding to a lost input, such as by using replacement frames or a slate; it is not the file-repeat setting. See AWS input-loss behavior for that separate feature.
Choose the right behavior for your schedule

AWS documents that a follow input cannot succeed when the current input is set to LOOP, because the current input restarts at end-of-file. See the MediaLive User Guide for source end behavior and AWS file-input documentation for the file source types.

Send the MediaLive output to YouTube Live
- In the MediaLive channel configuration, add an RTMP output group. AWS’s guide explains how to create an RTMP output group.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key for the event. Enter the destination details in MediaLive’s output configuration. Depending on the destination fields, this can include protocol, address, port, application name, stream name, and credentials. See AWS RTMP destination fields and YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL when it is offered and supported by the MediaLive destination configuration. RTMPS encrypts the connection to Google’s servers; do not assume the displayed default URL is the secure one. Confirm protocol and certificate compatibility for the selected destination. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Save and start the channel, then check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.
Match the encoder settings to the YouTube profile
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not more than four seconds. These are YouTube requirements and recommendations, not a guarantee that every codec is available in every MediaLive configuration. Check the options exposed by your channel and use a compatible profile. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
Bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. As examples from YouTube’s H.264 guidance checked in 2026, the table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 30 fps, and 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended for 1080p at 60 fps. These figures apply to those H.264 profiles; use the matching current table row for your chosen profile rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

- Use the stream key and URL for the intended YouTube event, and keep the key private.
- Choose a MediaLive output codec and profile that the specific channel configuration supports and that matches the YouTube encoder guidance.
- Test with representative movement and audio, then monitor the event’s stream health before relying on the loop.
Troubleshooting common problems
The video plays once and stops
Check the input attachment’s Source end behavior. If it is set to CONTINUE, the file is not configured for repeat-at-end; set it to LOOP for continuous replay.
The next input never takes over
A current input set to LOOP restarts at the file end, so it does not complete for a follow input. If the intended schedule is file A followed by input B, use CONTINUE for A and configure the follow transition.

YouTube does not receive the stream
Check that the RTMP output group contains the URL and stream key from the correct YouTube event and that the destination protocol and fields are compatible. If using RTMPS, confirm MediaLive’s protocol and certificate settings support the selected secure URL.
YouTube reports poor stream health
Check codec availability for the MediaLive channel, CBR, keyframe interval, resolution, frame rate, and the bitrate row for that exact profile. Test representative motion and audio, then use the event’s stream-health indicators to narrow down the issue.

The file restarts at an unexpected point
For a static file input, switching away and later selecting it again starts ingesting from the beginning of the file or clipped segment. That scheduled re-selection is different from LOOP, which repeats at file end. AWS describes the behavior in its file input documentation.
