OBS can drop frames for three different reasons: network instability, rendering lag, or encoding overload. Check which OBS counter is rising before changing settings. Network-dropped frames point to the connection or bitrate; rendering and encoding lag point to work the computer cannot complete in time. A stream running 24/7 does not, by itself, identify the cause.

First identify which OBS counter is rising

Open OBS’s Stats window while streaming and watch these separate indicators. Record the values and elapsed time, or take a screenshot, before you change anything. The counters describe different problems and call for different fixes.

OBS indicator What it points to First place to investigate
Dropped frames (network) The connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Upload capacity, connection stability, and ingest server.
Frames missed due to rendering lag OBS is not rendering and compositing frames in time. GPU contention, demanding scenes or sources, filters, resolution, and frame rate.
Skipped frames due to encoding lag The encoder cannot encode frames fast enough for the selected output and workload. Encoder load and output demands; the bottleneck may depend on the encoder and computer.

OBS’s connection guide says that dropped frames mean the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Its statement that OBS Studio is extremely unlikely to cause dropped frames refers to this network-dropped-frames category, not the separate rendering-lag or encoding-lag indicators. OBS connection troubleshooting and OBS encoding performance troubleshooting distinguish these issues.

Do not assume viewer buffering means OBS has dropped frames. A viewer may buffer because of their device, location, or connection even when the broadcaster’s OBS counters show no dropped frames. OBS’s streaming issues guide explains this distinction.

Fix network-dropped frames

If the network counter rises, check whether your upload can steadily carry the total stream bitrate, including audio. YouTube recommends leaving 20% outbound-bandwidth headroom; shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream, especially when other devices are active.

  1. Check available upload capacity. Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity, not just a brief best-case result. Leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; the stream’s total bitrate should not use all available upload bandwidth.
  2. Stabilize the connection. If practical, test a reliable wired connection instead of Wi-Fi. A Cat6 Ethernet cable may help establish a wired link when network drops are the issue, but it will not fix rendering lag or encoding overload.
  3. Check the ingest server. Compare another available YouTube ingest server and see whether the network-dropped-frames counter changes.
  4. Account for other network use. Pause or schedule large uploads and downloads on a shared connection, then observe the same OBS counter over a useful interval.

YouTube’s network guidance says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. It also recommends a reliable network because a connectivity disruption can break the stream. See YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance.

Set YouTube encoder settings your connection can sustain

YouTube’s published recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, its current guidance lists these two common 1080p targets:

H.264 output Minimum bitrate listed Recommended bitrate listed
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular connection can maintain the bitrate. If the recommended target leaves too little upload headroom or the network counter rises, choose a lower sustainable output rather than forcing the connection to carry a setting it cannot reliably support.

Confirm the current settings for your codec and output in YouTube’s encoder settings and live streaming guidance. Bitrate targets should be treated as platform guidance, then checked against the connection and YouTube stream health.

Fix rendering lag

Rendering lag means OBS is struggling to build the scene on time. Reduce GPU work and scene complexity before assuming you need different hardware.

  • Simplify demanding scenes, browser sources, and filters; disable sources or effects you do not need.
  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate if rendering still cannot keep up. A lower frame rate reduces both rendering and encoding work.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator if GPU overload is the issue, as OBS recommends.

Change one setting at a time and observe the rendering-lag counter over a comparable interval. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers rendering and encoding workload reductions.

Fix encoding overload

Encoding lag means the selected encoder and workload cannot encode frames quickly enough. Reduce the demand first: lower resolution or frame rate, or adjust other costly output settings. The limiting factor may be CPU capacity or a hardware encoder, depending on the encoder and machine; the symptom alone does not establish which component is at fault.

  1. Check the OBS log for the encoder in use and any overload messages.
  2. Reduce one output demand at a time, then watch whether skipped frames due to encoding lag stop rising.
  3. Keep the test realistic: YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the actual stream, and monitoring stream health.
  4. Consider hardware changes only after the log and repeatable tests identify a real limit.

A machine configuration, OBS log, and stream-health report are needed to diagnose an individual case; a 24/7 schedule alone is not evidence that a CPU, GPU, capture card, or encoder needs replacing.

Test changes without losing the cause

Make one change at a time so you can tell which action affected the right counter. Record the OBS Stats values and how long you observed them. For a meaningful test, use audio and video movement similar to the real stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than relying on a short idle scene.

Plan for YouTube’s 24/7 archive limit

A continuous schedule does not change how OBS’s three frame indicators are diagnosed, but it does create a separate replay risk. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, keep a local recording as a backup. If you need both one uninterrupted multi-day watch page and a complete replay, plan how to handle archive segmentation and local storage before going live. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera or desktop scene, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. It streams the uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
