Scheduling the event alone does not schedule your computer or OBS to launch and begin playback.
What YouTube scheduling does—and what it does not do
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming YouTube event and watch page that you can share so viewers can find the stream and set reminders. OBS separately plays the media source in an active scene and sends the video and audio to YouTube as the encoder.
Those are separate jobs. Creating the event does not, by itself, wake your computer, launch OBS, select the right scene, or start a video at a future time. You need to arrange for the computer and OBS to be running and the correct media to be ready. If you plan to automate YouTube’s transition to live, check the current auto-start and auto-stop settings for that broadcast rather than assuming they are enabled.
1. Schedule the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, open Manage, and choose Schedule stream.
- Create a new stream or reuse settings. Set the title, description, visibility, audience settings, and scheduled time. Confirm the event details before sharing its watch-page URL.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room when preparing to connect OBS. YouTube’s documented manual encoder flow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then click Go live.
Scheduling lets you promote the event ahead of time; it does not mean the prerecorded file will begin playing automatically at the scheduled hour.

2. Connect OBS to the scheduled broadcast
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the scheduled event, find the encoder connection details.
- In OBS, select YouTube as the streaming service and connect as directed, or enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio in OBS’s server and stream-key fields.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or public instructions. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
Check that OBS is connected to the intended scheduled event and that the event shown in Live Control Room is the one you mean to broadcast.
3. Add the prerecorded video in OBS
For one video file
- In OBS, create or select the scene you want to use.
- Add a Media Source to that scene and select the video file. Confirm that the source is visible and that both the picture and audio play as expected.
- Check the source’s playback and looping behavior. If you want a single playback, make sure it will not stop before the event ends; if you need a loop, enable the relevant loop option and test it before going live.
For a sequence of videos
- Add OBS’s VLC-based Video Source and build a playlist from your files.
- Install VLC if the Video Source option is not available; OBS requires VLC for this source type.
- Check playlist order, looping, and how the source behaves when its scene is hidden. Test transitions between files and confirm that audio continues as intended.
Make sure the selected files remain accessible to OBS. If you move or rename them after setup, update the source paths and test again.

4. Check video, audio, and computer load
- Preview the intended scene and listen for the full audio path, including the start, transitions, and end of the file.
- Choose output resolution and frame rate that fit the source material and the computer’s available resources. OBS documents these settings in its output/video configuration; 60 fps can demand more from the system than 30 fps.
- Confirm the video is not cropped, stretched, or covered by another source, and that the audio meters respond while the file plays.
- Keep the computer powered, connected to the internet, and available for the entire broadcast. A local OBS setup depends on the machine and its connection remaining operational.
5. Start the broadcast at the scheduled time
Manual launch
- At the event time, open the correct OBS scene and start streaming.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait until the incoming encoder preview appears and verify the picture and sound.
- Click Go live in YouTube Studio to make the scheduled broadcast live.
Using scheduled-stream automation
The OBS Project forum guide describes auto-start and auto-stop controls for scheduled streams. Their behavior depends on the broadcast’s settings and current YouTube integration. Before relying on them, inspect the event’s settings and confirm that OBS will already be running with the correct scene and video active. The event scheduler is not a documented wall-clock mechanism for waking the computer, opening OBS, and starting playback.
6. End the stream and understand the archive
When the broadcast is over, end it deliberately in YouTube Live Control Room using End Stream, then stop the encoder output in OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If you need a recording beyond that, keep your own local copy rather than relying solely on the live archive.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The scheduled event exists, but nothing starts at its time | Scheduling created the YouTube event, not a computer or OBS launch schedule. | Start the computer and OBS yourself, or separately verify the automation and event settings that will launch the encoder and trigger playback. |
| YouTube does not show an encoder preview | OBS may not be streaming, or the service, server URL, stream key, or selected event may be wrong. | Check OBS’s streaming connection and the credentials in the scheduled event’s Live Control Room. Never publish the stream key. |
| The preview appears, but the event is not live | YouTube’s manual flow requires the creator to confirm the transition. | Check the preview, then click Go live unless the event’s verified auto-start setting is handling it. |
| The video is black, missing, or silent | The wrong scene or source may be active, a file path may have changed, or the media source may not be playing. | Open the intended scene, verify the file path and source visibility, play the file in OBS, and inspect audio meters before the event. |
| A playlist source is unavailable | The VLC-based source requires VLC to be installed. | Install VLC, restart OBS if needed, and check that the Video Source option is available. |
| Playback stutters or OBS struggles | The chosen output settings may exceed the computer’s available resources; higher frame rates can add load. | Test the file in advance and consider a lower output frame rate or resolution suited to the source and machine. |
| The stream ends unexpectedly | The computer, OBS, or internet connection may have stopped sending the encoder feed. | Check the machine and network, then reconnect OBS and follow the current Live Control Room prompts. Do not assume a scheduled event automatically recovers a failed local encoder. |
