Choose OBS’s built-in VLC Video source if you want to manage a playlist in OBS and connect it to scenes using visible controls. Choose FFmpeg’s concat demuxer if you prefer a text-based file sequence and can keep its inputs compatible and supervise the streaming process. Neither option is, by itself, a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.

For a YouTube channel that should keep playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud-based alternative: upload the video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not camera feeds. Learn about StreamNeo.

How OBS playlists and FFmpeg concat differ

The main difference is where you manage the sequence and what you must operate. OBS puts the playlist in a source associated with a scene. FFmpeg reads a text file that lists media inputs and sends the resulting output through a configured command.

Decision OBS VLC Video playlist FFmpeg concat demuxer
Playlist management Edit a playlist in an OBS source associated with a scene; shuffle is available. Edit a text file listing the media files and any applicable directives.
Repeat behavior OBS documentation says Loop Playlist is enabled by default. Concat reads inputs in sequence. The format documentation does not establish an infinite live-stream process; confirm looping and restart behavior for your command and installed FFmpeg version.
Dependencies and constraints VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS (64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS). You need a suitable FFmpeg build and command configuration. For concat, files must have matching streams, including codecs and time bases.
Scene visibility Documented behavior defaults to stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when visible. Pause or continue options are available. If FFmpeg sends output directly, playback is controlled by the process rather than an OBS scene’s visibility.
Transition and timestamp considerations The documentation does not promise gapless playback for a particular collection. Test the actual files. Concat uses file durations to adjust timestamps. Incorrect duration information can cause artifacts; differing stream lengths can create gaps.
24/7 reliability evidence Loop controls are documented, but the page does not promise end-to-end uptime. Concat is a sequencing feature, not a process supervisor or uptime guarantee.

These are workflow distinctions, not results from a head-to-head uptime test. The documentation does not establish which approach runs longer on your hardware or how your destination behaves when a connection drops. Choose the workflow that fits how you operate

Choose OBS VLC Video for a scene-based setup

  • You want to configure and maintain the video sequence in OBS’s interface.
  • The playlist needs to be part of an OBS scene workflow.
  • You can install VLC, match its architecture to OBS, and verify how source visibility affects playback.

Choose FFmpeg concat for a text-managed sequence

  • You want to define file order in a playlist text file and control the output through a command.
  • You can validate that files have compatible streams and maintain correct paths and playlist syntax.
  • You can separately manage process supervision, monitoring, and reconnection behavior.

OBS documentation describes a VLC Video playlist source; an unspecified third-party playlist plugin is not required for that documented workflow. If you are considering a particular external plugin, verify its current release, platform and OBS compatibility, maintenance, security, and license before installing it. No specific third-party plugin is established here as the right choice.

Set up a playlist in OBS

  1. Install VLC and check architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match the architectures; for example, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
  2. Add the playlist source. In the scene where the cartoons should appear, add a VLC Video source and configure its playlist using the controls available in your installed OBS version.
  3. Check playback options. Confirm Loop Playlist is enabled if the sequence should repeat. Enable shuffle only if you want playback order randomized. Inspect the audio track and caching settings as appropriate for your files. OBS documentation lists network caching at 400 ms; treat that as a displayed setting/default, not a recommendation for local files.
  4. Decide what happens when the source is hidden. The documented default is to stop when not visible and restart when visible. Choose the appropriate pause, stop, or continue behavior in the source settings and test it with your actual scene layout.
  5. Test the sequence in the intended scene. Confirm that the first and last files play as expected, audio is present, and transitions behave acceptably. The documentation does not guarantee gapless playback for an arbitrary media collection.

Build an FFmpeg concat playlist

The concat demuxer reads a text file containing the input sequence. Its documented format is useful for sequential playback, but it does not remove the need to configure an output command, decide how repetition works, and supervise the running process.

  1. Validate your media first. The concat demuxer expects each file to contain the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. Do not assume a mixed cartoon library can be joined with stream copy without checking it.
  2. Create a playlist text file. List the input files in the order you want them played, following FFmpeg’s documented concat syntax. Keep paths valid; paths containing spaces or special characters require appropriate escaping or quoting.
  3. Configure and verify the output command. Choose the destination and output options for your actual streaming setup. Confirm the installed FFmpeg version, how the sequence repeats, and what happens at the end of the list; the concat format documentation alone does not specify an infinite live-stream command.
  4. Check durations and transitions. Concat adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration. Incorrect duration information can produce artifacts, and different stream lengths can create gaps. Test the joins with the actual files rather than assuming they will be seamless.
  5. Handle incompatible inputs deliberately. A filter-and-re-encode workflow may accommodate differing inputs, but it requires additional configuration and compute. There is no single command established here for an unknown library; validate the media and workflow you intend to use.

See FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation for the format and its constraints.

What a 24/7 setup still needs

A playlist handles media sequencing; it does not alone provide a complete operating plan. For either workflow, determine how the actual destination handles disconnects and plan for the host, process, and media library to fail.
