To fix distorted audio on a YouTube radio livestream, first find where the distortion begins: compare the audio source, your encoder’s output and a local recording with the stream viewers hear. If the encoder output is already distorted, investigate the source and audio routing. If it sounds clean but the viewer stream does not, check the encoder’s errors and load, then test the outbound connection and YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo RTMP/RTMPS streams, but those settings cannot repair distortion already present in the input.

1. Locate the first point where distortion appears

Do not start by replacing a microphone, mixer or cable. YouTube Help says poor sound can originate in the audio and video sources routed to the encoder. Compare the sound at each point you can access; this narrows the fault area but does not, by itself, prove which device or setting is responsible.

  1. Listen to the source. Check the audio before it enters your streaming software or hardware encoder.
  2. Listen to the encoder output. If your encoder provides monitoring, check what it is actually sending, not just what you hear at the source.
  3. Review a local recording or archive. If one is available, compare it with the source and encoder output.
  4. Compare with the viewer stream. If the source, encoder output and archive are distorted, investigate the source or routing. If those are clean but viewers hear distortion, move to encoder, network and YouTube stream-health checks.

YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the sources routed to the encoder, encoder output, encoder errors and CPU load. If the cause is still unclear, trying another encoder can help isolate the issue; it is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide

2. Verify YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings

For stereo audio sent over RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC or MP3 as supported codecs and recommends a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps audio bitrate. Check the encoder’s actual output settings and any specific warnings shown in the Live Control Room or encoder. YouTube’s live encoder settings

  • Codec: AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Sample rate: 44.1 kHz for stereo.
  • Audio bitrate: 128 kbps for stereo.

If YouTube reports an incorrect audio sample rate, its error guidance says to correct it to 44.1 kHz; its stereo audio recommendation is 128 kbps. YouTube live-stream error messages These are platform recommendations, not a universal cure: if the input is already distorted, changing the output format will not clean it up. YouTube also supports 5.1 surround sound only with AAC over RTMP/RTMPS, which is not usually relevant to a stereo radio feed.

3. Check the encoder and its inputs

When distortion is audible at the encoder output or in a local archive, focus on the signal entering and passing through the encoder. When the encoder output is clean but viewers report a problem, check the encoder and delivery path instead of assuming the original audio source is at fault.

  • Check CPU load and encoder status for signs the system is struggling to produce the stream.
  • Confirm that the intended audio source is routed to the encoder and that you are monitoring the same source being streamed.
  • If available, compare the encoder output with a local recording and the viewer stream.
  • If the fault remains unclear, test another encoder to help separate an encoder-specific issue from the source or delivery path.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast, checking the Live Control Room preview before going live, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast. YouTube live-streaming tips

4. Check upload capacity when the encoder output is clean

If the encoder output and local recording sound clean but the viewer stream does not, assess whether the outbound connection can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom: its suggested upload-capacity calculation is primary stream bitrate + backup stream bitrate + 20%. This is a planning recommendation, not proof that a bandwidth issue is causing a particular audio distortion. YouTube streaming tips

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

Check the total bitrate your encoder sends, including a backup stream if you use one, against the upload capacity available while broadcasting. If capacity is insufficient or inconsistent, test again under suitable network conditions and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps if the encoder output is clean and the issue remains. YouTube live-stream troubleshooting

5. Test safely before the next radio broadcast

  1. Use a test with audio and motion similar to the planned radio livestream, as YouTube recommends.
  2. Check the Live Control Room preview before going live.
  3. Confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 at the recommended stereo settings, and resolve any explicit encoder or YouTube warnings.
  4. Listen to the encoder output and, if available, a local recording. Compare both with the viewer stream.
  5. Monitor audio/video quality, encoder load and YouTube stream health during the broadcast.

There is no single microphone, mixer, interface or cable purchase that YouTube identifies as a universal fix. Consider equipment only after the comparison points to a particular source or component.
