First identify which frames are being lost: OBS encoding or rendering overload points to local production demands, while network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity. Check OBS Statistics and YouTube Live Control Room stream health before changing settings or buying hardware. Then reduce OBS workload, consider a compatible hardware encoder if software encoding is the bottleneck, and test the settings under representative conditions.

Identify what is causing the dropped frames

CPU usage alone does not identify the fault. OBS separates performance problems such as encoding overload from frames lost while sending the stream over the network. YouTube also surfaces encoder and stream-health messages in Live Control Room. Check both before making changes: OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide explains the difference, and YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load when audio or video quality is poor.

  • Encoding or rendering trouble: OBS reports encoding overload, or the local output looks choppy. Investigate encoding settings and scene complexity.
  • Network trouble: OBS reports dropped frames or disconnections while the encoder output appears healthy. Investigate upload capacity and connection stability; lowering CPU demand will not fix an unstable route to YouTube.

For a useful diagnosis, record the OBS statistics and encoder messages, your CPU and GPU models, encoder choice, output resolution, frame rate and bitrate, plus an upload-speed measurement. Without those details, no specific CPU setting or hardware upgrade can be identified as the fix.

Reduce the work OBS has to do

Lower output resolution or frame rate

In OBS, open Settings > Video and test a lower Output (Scaled) Resolution or frame rate. OBS recommends reducing resolution and frame rate when resources are constrained; if 60 fps cannot be sustained, test 30 fps. Lower resolution reduces the amount of image data to process, while a lower frame rate means fewer frames must be rendered and encoded each second. Choose the smallest reduction that stabilizes the stream while preserving the image quality you need.

Simplify scenes

Remove or disable scene sources, filters, animated elements and other effects that are not needed for the continuous broadcast. Keep the active scene collection as simple as the program allows. Rendering and compositing can also consume system resources, so changing only the encoder may not solve a rendering bottleneck.

Change one setting at a time, then check OBS statistics and YouTube stream health. That makes it easier to see whether a change helped and avoids sacrificing more image quality than necessary. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide for additional performance recommendations.

Use a hardware encoder if software encoding is the bottleneck

If OBS is using the CPU-based x264 software encoder and reports encoding overload, a compatible hardware encoder may shift encoding work from the CPU to a dedicated component in the GPU. OBS generally recommends hardware encoding for performance when suitable hardware is available. YouTube specifically notes that NVIDIA GPUs include NVENC hardware-based encoding that can encode without using the CPU.

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Output and inspect the Encoder selection for the streaming output. The available choices depend on your GPU, drivers and OBS installation.
  2. Select a compatible hardware encoder only if it is available, then apply YouTube-compatible settings for your chosen codec and video mode.
  3. Run a test stream with representative movement and audio. Check image quality, OBS performance statistics and YouTube stream health before relying on it for an ongoing broadcast.

Hardware encoding is conditional, not a universal reason to buy a new GPU. Confirm that CPU software encoding is the problem first, and check that the hardware encoder supports your intended settings. A hardware encoder also cannot repair a network connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Read OBS’s hardware encoding overview and YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Available codecs and settings depend on the encoder and workflow, so follow the current table on YouTube’s official encoder settings page rather than assuming every option appears in OBS.

Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate. Select the row for the actual mode you intend to stream; a bitrate copied from a different codec or resolution may be unsuitable. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real broadcast and monitoring stream health. A static test image alone may not reveal problems that occur during active scenes.

Check upload capacity if OBS reports network-dropped frames

Measure outbound upload bandwidth, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving approximately 20% of upload capacity beyond the total stream bitrate, and calls for a reliable connection. If the available upload is constrained or varies over time, reduce the bitrate to a level the connection can sustain or troubleshoot the connection with your internet provider. OBS notes that dropped frames can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate.

  • Compare measured upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and leave the recommended headroom.
  • If the connection is shared, account for other devices and uploads using the same connection during the broadcast.
  • If the bitrate is sustainable on paper but drops continue, investigate connection stability rather than changing CPU settings.

Validate the setup for continuous streaming

YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream quality. For a 24/7 broadcast, test the actual workflow with the scenes, audio, encoder and connection you will use, then observe local performance and YouTube stream health under representative load. Verify that the intended mode stays stable over the operating period you need.

The official guidance cited here does not specify a universal CPU percentage, temperature limit or prescribed test duration for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Runtime alone does not establish the cause of dropped frames; diagnose the live system rather than assuming that a continuous schedule requires a particular CPU target.

Common problems and fixes

What you see Likely area to investigate What to try
OBS reports encoding overload Software encoder workload or demanding output settings Lower output resolution or frame rate; if CPU software encoding is the bottleneck, test a compatible hardware encoder.
Local preview or output is choppy Rendering load, complex scenes or encoding load Simplify scenes and sources, then test lower resolution or frame rate. Check OBS performance statistics to distinguish rendering from encoding trouble.
OBS reports network-dropped frames or disconnections Unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity Measure upload bandwidth, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and reduce bitrate or troubleshoot the connection if needed.
Stream is stable in a simple test but falters during the real program Test conditions do not represent the actual movement, audio or scene workload Repeat the test with representative content and monitor both OBS and YouTube stream health.
Considering a GPU purchase to fix CPU load The bottleneck has not yet been confirmed Check OBS statistics and test lower-workload settings first. Buy hardware only if a compatible hardware encoder addresses the confirmed bottleneck.
