No—not reliably. OBS and FFmpeg can change how a video is captured, encoded, filtered, or packaged, but YouTube’s published guidance describes matching uploaded videos against reference content supplied by rights holders. It does not say that using either tool—or changing a particular setting—prevents a match. A Content ID match can lead to a claim, but it is not by itself a legal ruling that the video infringes.
How YouTube copyright matching works
YouTube says an uploaded video is automatically scanned by Content ID. The system compares audio and visual material with reference files supplied by eligible rights holders. If it finds a match, the rights holder’s policy may block the video, monetize it, or track its viewership; the policy can vary by country or region. Content ID is not a general-purpose detector that creators can configure for their own material. YouTube limits access to rights holders who meet its eligibility requirements, and reference files must represent content for which the owner has the necessary rights. The matching process concerns the content compared with those references, not the name of the editing or encoding program.
What OBS and FFmpeg can—and cannot—change
OBS
OBS lets you choose encoders and adjust recording settings such as bitrate, quality preset, keyframe interval, resolution scaling, and audio tracks. It can also remux a recording. These options affect the file or stream produced, including its quality, size, and the load on your computer; they do not establish that copyrighted material will become undetectable. FFmpeg
FFmpeg can filter or transcode media into different formats. It can also copy audio and video streams without re-encoding them. As a result, FFmpeg workflows may preserve a source differently or transform it in different ways. Its documentation describes these operations, but does not say that a filter, codec, or transcode defeats YouTube matching.
So, encoding can change the media file; the available documentation does not support promising that a changed file will avoid a match. There is no established basis here for claims such as “OBS gets detected but FFmpeg doesn’t,” or for quoting a detection reduction from changing codecs, filters, or bitrates.

OBS versus FFmpeg: workflow, not detection odds

YouTube does not publish matching thresholds or a controlled OBS-versus-FFmpeg comparison. The evidence therefore does not establish which tool—or which codec, bitrate, filter, or other transformation—would be more or less likely to produce a match.
Live streams are handled differently from uploads
YouTube says all live streams are scanned for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If third-party material remains in a live stream after a warning, YouTube may interrupt or terminate it. If a stream is archived, Content ID claims may be made after the broadcast ends. YouTube also documents live Content ID matching for eligible Content Manager partners. That rights-management feature has eligibility and operating requirements, including global rights and exclusive ownership for the stream content. It is not a setting ordinary streamers can enable to change how their own streams are detected. See Use Content ID matching on live streams.
A match, a claim, and infringement are different things
- A match means YouTube found content that corresponds to a rights holder’s reference.
- A Content ID claim is an action associated with a match. Depending on the rights holder’s policy, the video may be blocked, monetized, or tracked.
- A takedown or strike is distinct from a Content ID claim. A copyright removal request can have separate consequences for a channel.
- Infringement is a legal question, not something established solely by the existence of a match. YouTube notes that finding a matching video does not by itself mean it infringes; exceptions such as fair use or fair dealing may need consideration.
For details, consult YouTube’s pages on copyright claims and the Copyright Match Tool. If you receive a claim, review its details and the rights holder’s policy rather than treating the software used to make the video as a defense.

Safer steps if you are concerned about a claim
- Use material you created, licensed, or otherwise have permission to use.
- Check the license terms for music, footage, and other assets, including whether the license covers your intended use and territory.
- Keep records of licenses and permissions so you can refer to them if a claim arises.
- If a claim appears, read the claim details and YouTube’s dispute guidance carefully. Dispute only when you have a valid basis; changing the encoding tool does not itself establish permission or resolve the rights question.
