For a reliable YouTube Live stream, choose a resolution and frame rate your encoder and upload connection can sustain, then use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for that combination and codec. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default; manual selection is available with a custom stream key. Its documented ingest limit is up to 60 fps.

How YouTube RTMP resolution and frame-rate settings work

In Live Control Room, YouTube detects the encoder’s selected settings by default and transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple formats for viewers. Your ingest resolution is therefore not a promise that every viewer will receive or see that exact resolution; playback quality can vary.

The settings below concern live RTMP/RTMPS ingest, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video file.

What resolution and frame rate should you use?

Choose the highest combination your encoder and sustained upload capacity can handle reliably. Higher resolution preserves more detail, while a higher frame rate can make motion appear smoother; either raises the demands on the encoder and connection. YouTube lists ingest frame rates up to 60 fps and recommends checking upload speed before choosing settings. A speed test is a guide, not proof that the same rate will be sustained throughout a long stream, so leave practical headroom rather than targeting the measured peak.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

YouTube recommends leaving resolution and frame-rate detection automatic. If you need to select them manually, use a custom stream key and choose the manual resolution options in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommended live ingest bitrates

Use the bitrate column for the codec you are actually sending. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest values in Mbps, from its English-language live encoder guidance retrieved October 3, 2026; the page did not show a publication or revision date. They are recommendations, not hard minimums.

Resolution and frame rate AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) H.264
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 50 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 30 fps 30 Mbps 42 Mbps
1440p at 60 fps 24 Mbps 34 Mbps
1440p at 30 fps 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps
360p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 4 Mbps

For example, the recommended target for 1080p at 60 fps is 12 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 17 Mbps with H.264. Do not apply a figure from one codec column to another. If your connection cannot sustain the target, lower the resolution or frame rate rather than forcing a bitrate that risks an unstable stream. Source: YouTube Help: Live encoder settings.

Encoder settings to check

  • Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; the encoder must support it.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, subject to the encoder and stream type.
  • Bitrate mode: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube supports AAC only.

YouTube also documents advanced recommendations: square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR, and 8-bit SDR. For HDR, its guidance lists H.265 and 10-bit and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. At 3840×2160 and above, AV1 should use at least two tile columns. These are documented recommendations and codec-specific qualifications, not settings every encoder exposes or every stream requires.

Set up a continuous stream step by step

  1. Choose a sustainable output. Run an upload speed test, then select a resolution, frame rate, and codec whose recommended bitrate your connection can maintain with headroom. Check that the encoder can encode that combination as well as send it.
  2. Configure detection in Live Control Room. Keep resolution and frame-rate detection automatic unless you have a reason to control them. For manual selection, use a custom stream key and set the resolution options in Live Control Room.
  3. Match the encoder to YouTube’s settings. Set the chosen video codec, its corresponding recommended bitrate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval. Make sure the interval is no longer than 4 seconds.
  4. Use RTMPS if supported. You can reveal the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room; use it only with an encoder that supports RTMPS. See YouTube Help: Stream using RTMPS.
  5. Test with representative content. Include audio and movement similar to the actual program. YouTube Help advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
  6. Monitor while live. Watch stream health and encoder messages during the event; YouTube Help says to “monitor the stream health and review messages.”

Latency and 4K considerations

YouTube says 2160p (4K) streams are optimized for quality at normal latency and do not have the option to improve for low latency. If low latency is important, account for this limitation before choosing 4K; resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and connection stability still need to work together.

Common problems and fixes

  • Stream health reports instability or the stream drops: The selected bitrate may exceed what the connection can sustain, or the encoder may be overloaded. Reduce resolution or frame rate, confirm the bitrate matches the codec, and test the revised settings before relying on them continuously.
  • Manual resolution choices are unavailable: YouTube’s manual resolution selection requires a custom stream key. Use automatic detection or configure a custom key and its manual options in Live Control Room.
  • The encoder cannot connect over RTMPS: Confirm that RTMPS is supported and enabled by the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but its RTMPS URL will not work with an encoder that lacks support; use a supported connection protocol.
  • Picture detail or motion looks worse than expected: Check that the encoder is sending the intended resolution and frame rate, that its codec-specific bitrate target is appropriate, and that the connection is not forcing unstable delivery. YouTube transcodes the ingest into multiple viewer formats, so a viewer’s available playback quality need not match the ingest setting.
  • 4K does not offer a low-latency setting: This is expected under YouTube’s documented guidance for 2160p; it is optimized for normal latency.
