A good speed-test result does not prove your stream has a stable connection to YouTube’s ingest server—or that your computer can render and encode the stream without falling behind. In OBS, first identify which counter is rising: network-dropped frames, frames missed due to rendering lag, or skipped frames due to encoding lag. Each points to a different fix.

First identify which OBS counter is rising

Open OBS’s View > Stats window while streaming or running a test. Watch the counters, rather than treating every on-screen stutter or stream-health warning as the same problem.

  • Dropped Frames (Network): OBS is having trouble maintaining its connection to the remote streaming server or sustaining the configured bitrate. This points to the network path or bitrate.
  • Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag: OBS cannot render frames quickly enough. The issue is local graphics or scene workload, not necessarily internet speed.
  • Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag: The encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough. This is a local processing or encoder workload issue.

OBS distinguishes these causes in its guides to stream connection troubleshooting and encoding performance troubleshooting. Without your OBS counters and YouTube status messages, there is no reliable way to name a single cause.

If network-dropped frames are increasing, check the connection and bitrate

Match the bitrate to your exact stream format

YouTube’s live encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube currently recommends these ingestion bitrates; these are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. The YouTube guidance page does not display a publication year and may change, so check it again before a future stream.

Codec Resolution and frame rate YouTube recommended bitrate
H.264 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps
H.264 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
H.264 720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
H.264 720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps

These figures are for live-stream ingestion, not YouTube’s separate recommendations for encoding videos you upload. YouTube lists separate bitrate recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1; use the column for the codec you actually select rather than applying an H.264 number to another codec. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Lower the bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it

OBS recommends reducing bitrate when network drops occur. Its troubleshooting article suggests trying 75% of total upload speed as a starting heuristic, not a universal safe limit: the usable capacity on the route to YouTube can fluctuate and may be lower than a speed test suggests. Lower the OBS bitrate, then test the actual stream. If drops continue, reduce it further or choose a lower resolution or frame rate whose recommended bitrate fits the connection more comfortably.

A speed test measures a short test to its own server. It does not establish sustained capacity or stability along the complete route to YouTube’s ingest server while your stream is running. Other traffic on your network can also compete for upload capacity.

Check Wi-Fi, network software, and hardware

  • If Wi-Fi is unstable, try a wired Ethernet connection. OBS recommends wired networking when streaming over unstable Wi-Fi; a cable is a conditional troubleshooting option, not a default purchase.
  • Temporarily investigate whether a VPN, security software, network-optimization utility, or outdated network driver is interfering with the connection. Change one thing at a time and retest.
  • Check the router, modem, and network adapter for instability, and consider whether other devices or applications are using upload bandwidth.

OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers bitrate, wired networking, and possible software, driver, and network-hardware causes. A strong speed-test score does not rule these out.

If rendering or encoding lag is increasing, reduce local workload

Network changes will not fix a local rendering or encoding bottleneck. Try the following adjustments one at a time, checking the same OBS counter after each change:

  1. Reduce output resolution. A lower output resolution means fewer pixels for OBS to render and encode. Consider moving from 1080p to 720p if the computer cannot sustain the current output.
  2. Reduce frame rate. If the workload is still too high, try 30 fps instead of 60 fps. This reduces the number of frames the system must handle each second.
  3. Cap a game’s frame rate. An uncapped game can use resources OBS needs to render and encode the stream. Set a frame-rate cap and check whether rendering or encoding lag falls.
  4. Simplify demanding scenes and sources. Remove or reduce resource-intensive scene elements where practical, then test again.

Lower resolution or frame rate can reduce visual detail or motion smoothness. Choose the smallest adjustment that keeps OBS performing reliably for the content you are streaming. OBS discusses these local performance changes in its encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

Check the core YouTube encoder settings

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR), supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These are live-ingest requirements and recommendations, not settings for an uploaded video file.

  • Rate control: CBR.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: Up to 60 fps; select a rate your computer and connection can sustain.
  • Advanced video settings: YouTube lists square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.

Use YouTube’s live encoder settings page for codec-specific bitrate recommendations and the full current guidance. Do not assume a codec change alone will resolve network drops: the selected codec, output format, bitrate, computer workload, and ingest connection all matter.

Run a representative test and read both dashboards

  1. Set up OBS and YouTube as you intend to use them for the real stream, including the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
  2. Test with audio and movement similar to the planned event. YouTube specifically recommends that tests include representative audio and video movement.
  3. During the test, keep OBS’s Stats window open and note whether network drops, rendering lag, or encoding lag increases.
  4. Also check stream health and status messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Use those messages alongside the OBS counters to decide which branch to troubleshoot.
  5. Change one relevant setting or connection condition at a time, then repeat the test. This makes it easier to tell whether that change helped.

YouTube’s recommendations to test encoder settings and monitor live-stream health support this paired check. Testing the actual planned workload is more useful than relying on a speed test alone.

When latency is—and is not—the issue

YouTube defines stream latency as the delay between capturing a video and viewers playing it. Lower latency can mean more playback buffering for viewers. The cited YouTube guidance does not identify low latency as a remedy for OBS network-dropped frames, so changing latency settings is not the first fix for a rising network-dropped counter.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube stream, rather than diagnose a live OBS production, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
