Raising your encoder’s bitrate can improve the video YouTube receives if your current setting is below the recommended rate for your codec, resolution and frame rate. It does not guarantee a matching improvement for every viewer: YouTube transcodes live input into multiple playback formats, and each viewer’s device and connection affect playback. Use YouTube’s recommendation for your format, leave upload headroom and test under realistic conditions.
What bitrate changes—and what it does not
Bitrate is the amount of data your encoder sends each second. For a given resolution and frame rate, a higher input bitrate can give the encoder more data with which to represent detail and motion. If your current bitrate is too low for the format, increasing it toward YouTube’s recommended rate can help avoid an unnecessarily constrained input.
But the bitrate you send is not the bitrate every viewer receives. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers across different devices and networks can watch. That means an input bitrate increase does not promise a proportional or universal change in playback quality. YouTube’s recommendations are useful targets; the available guidance does not quantify a perceived-quality gain above those targets. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide explains the recommendations and transcoding.

The following selected recommendations are for the stream sent to YouTube. Choose the row for your resolution and frame rate, then the column for your codec. The figures are Mbps. YouTube’s full guide may change, so check it when configuring an encoder.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Input format | AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | H.264 |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 4K / 2160p at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are codec-specific input recommendations, not playback guarantees. The guide also lists RTMP/RTMPS streaming, H.264, H.265 and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm the current requirements and compatibility in the official encoder guide before changing your encoder.
How to choose a bitrate that is both clear and stable
- Set the format first. Choose resolution, frame rate and a codec supported by your encoder and YouTube. Then take the corresponding bitrate from the table above; a bitrate number without those format details is not a useful target.
- Check sustained upload capacity. Your available upload bandwidth must cover the stream, with room for normal variation and other network use. YouTube recommends 20% headroom. If you use a backup stream, account for it as well as the primary stream and headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Test representative material. Before the event, test with movement and audio like those in the real stream. Check playback and stream health rather than judging only the encoder’s bitrate setting.
- Monitor while live. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages and look for interruptions or buffering. If stability worsens after a bitrate increase, restore a sustainable setting rather than insisting on a higher number.
- Change one variable at a time. If you are comparing settings, keep the content and other encoder settings as consistent as possible. Assess representative playback and stream health; do not assume that exceeding YouTube’s recommendation will produce a visible gain.
Bitrate is separate from latency
A higher bitrate does not itself make a stream lower-latency. YouTube’s latency guidance describes a trade-off: lower latency can mean more buffering. If real-time audience interaction is not important, a lower-latency setting may not be worth that cost. Choose latency for the event’s needs, separately from the bitrate and format. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers the latency options.

Common bitrate problems and fixes
- Stream health degrades after raising bitrate: the upload connection may not sustain the new rate, particularly when bandwidth is shared. Return to a sustainable setting, reduce competing network use, or improve the available upload capacity; retain headroom.
- The encoder setting does not match the YouTube recommendation: verify the selected codec, resolution and frame rate, then consult the matching row in YouTube’s guide. A 1080p30 target is not interchangeable with 1080p60 or 4K.
- Some viewers still see lower quality: YouTube creates multiple playback formats, and the viewer’s device and network affect playback. The input bitrate cannot guarantee one identical quality level for all viewers.
- Playback buffers despite an appropriate input bitrate: bitrate and latency are different settings. Review the latency trade-off and test the stream; lower latency may increase buffering.
- Quality seems unchanged above the recommended rate: the guidance does not establish a predictable improvement beyond its recommended input rates. Compare a realistic test and keep the higher setting only if it helps without compromising stability.
