To set up a black-screen sleep music live stream on YouTube, enable live streaming for your channel, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send a black video scene and properly licensed music from streaming software, then test the audio and connection before going live. For an overnight broadcast, plan the music loop, upload capacity, rights, monitoring, and archive length in advance.
Before you set up the stream
Enable YouTube Live early
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Confirm your music rights
Use music you created yourself or music licensed for the specific uses you intend: a live YouTube broadcast and, if you keep one, its replay. “Royalty-free,” a free download, or owning the audio file does not by itself establish that you have the necessary rights. Check the license terms, including any attribution requirements, and confirm that they cover the relevant rights holders and uses. YouTube’s Livestream terms say creators represent that they have the necessary rights for live content, including applicable music licensing rights.

Build the black-screen music scene
Use a black visual source
In your streaming software, create a scene with a black image or black video source filling the output frame. Keep other visual sources hidden, and check the preview for overlays, desktop capture, or unintended content. A black image is enough for a static visual; you do not need a camera for this setup.
Add and loop the music
Add the permitted sleep-music file or audio input as the scene’s audio source. If the track is shorter than the planned broadcast, configure that source to repeat in your encoder software. Loop controls differ by application; confirm the selected source actually restarts at the end of the track rather than becoming silent. Listen to the beginning, end, and loop transition for abrupt cuts, gaps, clicks, or volume changes.

Choose encoder settings and check your connection
YouTube’s published encoder guidance recommends H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Its settings table lists 2 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. YouTube does not publish a special preset for a static sleep-music image, so treat these as baseline settings and test the actual configuration. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Video: H.264 with CBR; 720p at 30 fps and 2 Mbps is a listed YouTube setting. A black, static frame does not remove the need to send a valid video stream.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where the encoder exposes this setting; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3. Select a stable output level and listen for clipping, unintended silence, or noise before the overnight run.
- Upload capacity: YouTube recommends about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate. Allow for other devices and network activity using the connection.
These are YouTube operational recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or internet connection will sustain a stream. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing in advance, configuring the stream at least two hours before a scheduled event, and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before it.

-
To finish, stop the stream in the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room. YouTube documents the workflow in its encoder setup guidance.
Plan for the replay and overnight duration
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for a stream longer than 12 hours. If retaining a replay matters for a longer broadcast, arrange a local recording or split the broadcast into shorter streams, and verify your archive after the event. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable | Channel eligibility or first-time activation is incomplete. | Verify the channel, check for live-stream restrictions within the preceding 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours for first activation. |
| YouTube receives no encoder feed | Wrong stream URL or key, encoder not started, or incorrect destination settings. | Compare the encoder destination with the URL and private key for the intended stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key confidential. |
| Music stops while the black image continues | The audio source is not repeating, or the selected source ended. | Check the source’s repeat setting in the encoder and test a full track transition before going live. |
| Audio is silent, distorted, or interrupted | Wrong source, unsuitable output level, or an unstable connection. | Confirm the active audio source and AAC or MP3 encoding, listen to the output, and inspect stream health and available upload capacity. |
| Connection health is poor | Insufficient upload headroom or competing network use. | Compare available upload capacity with the total stream bitrate, keeping YouTube’s recommended roughly 20% margin, and reduce competing network activity. |
| The replay is missing after a long stream | The broadcast exceeded the duration for which YouTube documents automatic archiving. | For future streams over 12 hours, make a local recording or split the broadcast; do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically. |
