To turn a podcast into a continuous YouTube live stream, schedule a broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, send a looping playlist of episodes and visuals through an encoder such as OBS, then monitor the stream and plan how you will recover if it stops. Your source, encoder, internet connection and power must remain available for a locally run stream. Before launch, confirm your channel is eligible and that you have the rights to rebroadcast every audio and visual asset.

What you need for a continuous podcast stream

YouTube’s encoder workflow suits broadcasts with a visual, overlays or external hardware. For a podcast feed, the encoder sends episode audio along with a title card, visual loop or other video source. YouTube’s API documentation uses a channel broadcasting a 24/7 feed as an example, but that does not guarantee any particular stream will remain uninterrupted.

  • Eligible YouTube channel: The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current help page says a user must be at least 16 to livestream. Check the requirements and instructions in your account before scheduling.
  • Episodes and visuals: Prepare podcast files and the visuals you want viewers to see. Use only material you are permitted to rebroadcast on YouTube.
  • Playback source and encoder: A computer running OBS can play the episodes and send the program to YouTube. OBS’s official Help Portal points users to its Auto-Configuration Wizard and streaming setup guidance.
  • Continuous operation: A local setup depends on the computer, source media, power and internet connection remaining available. YouTube lists no expensive equipment requirement for getting started, so a dedicated streaming computer is not automatically necessary.
  • Monitoring and recovery plan: Decide who will notice a failed source or dropped connection and how the encoder will be restarted.

Other streaming methods are available, but an encoder is the relevant choice when you want to combine prerecorded episodes with a visual presentation.

Check rights before putting episodes on air

YouTube requires livestream content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and it may restrict streams. Having permission to distribute a podcast through one channel or platform does not, by itself, establish permission to rebroadcast every music track, guest contribution, cover image or other included asset on YouTube.

Choose what the audience will see

Decide whether the stream will show a static title card, a visual loop or another suitable video presentation. A title card or loop is a production choice, not a platform requirement established by YouTube. Make sure any image, animation or other visual you use is cleared for the broadcast.

Arrange playback

Create a playlist or another playback sequence that can continue through the episodes you have chosen. Check that the audio plays cleanly from one episode into the next and that the visual remains present. Listen to the transitions rather than assuming a playlist will behave as intended.

Before committing to a long-running broadcast, test a representative section of the sequence. Confirm the intended episode order, audio level, visual output and what happens when playback reaches the end of the list. The precise repeat behavior depends on the playback setup you choose.

Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS

  1. Open YouTube Studio and check Live Control Room. Follow the current prompts in your account to create or schedule a live broadcast. Studio labels and steps can change, so use the instructions shown in the interface rather than relying on an older walkthrough.
  2. Choose the encoder workflow. In the broadcast setup, select or create the stream settings for an encoder and obtain the connection details YouTube provides. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your channel.
  3. Open OBS and configure the program. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard and official streaming guidance to help set up the software. Add the episode playback source and the visual you prepared, then select YouTube as the destination and enter the stream credentials using the current OBS and YouTube workflow.
  4. Run a test before the planned start. Start the encoder as a test and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check that the correct audio and video reach YouTube before starting the public broadcast.
  5. Start the broadcast from the current Studio workflow. Confirm the preview and the on-screen status before you make the stream public or begin the scheduled live event.

YouTube’s transcoding documentation, dated June 9, 2021, describes platform transcoding, but it is background information rather than a current encoder configuration specification. Use the settings and recommendations displayed in YouTube Studio and OBS for your actual stream; do not assume older configuration guidance is still current.

Validate the stream and monitor it

During the test and after launch, check the broadcast from the viewer’s side as well as from the encoder. YouTube’s live-streaming tips call out the preview, archive-file growth, viewer accessibility and ongoing audio and video quality as useful operational checks.

  • Ongoing checks: Decide how often someone will check the stream and who is responsible for responding to an interruption.

Plan for dropped connections and replay limits

A continuous feed can stop if the playback source ends, OBS closes, the computer loses power, or the connection fails. Assign responsibility for spotting a stopped stream and restarting the source or encoder. Do not assume that OBS, YouTube or an unverified host will automatically reconnect or provide uninterrupted uptime.

YouTube exposes archive and automatic-recording settings, but creators should check the current setting and test the replay produced by their own setup. An ongoing broadcast is not a universal promise of one complete, permanently available video-on-demand file. If a complete episode archive matters, keep the original recordings and maintain a separate recording or publishing workflow rather than relying only on the livestream replay.

Choose local or hosted operation

A local OBS setup gives you direct control of the playback and encoder, but the computer, media source, power and internet connection at that location need to stay available. A hosted setup can reduce dependence on a home computer; compare options based on who handles monitoring and recovery, setup complexity, archive handling, content controls and total cost. Do not assume a hosted service has a particular reliability level or feature unless its provider states and supports it.
