A VPS loop is not a live camera broadcast: it sends prerecorded material in real time. If you need a replayable YouTube archive, end each stream before it reaches 12 hours and keep a separate recording.
Before you begin
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned start. YouTube also requires that the channel have no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- A prerecorded sermon file or playlist that you have the rights to stream, including its music and other embedded material.
- A VPS with enough CPU capacity for your chosen encoding method and sustained outbound network capacity. Check that the provider offers an India-region location if that is important to your audience, and review its transfer limits, acceptable-use terms and support.
- An encoder configured to send a real-time output to YouTube. The VPS must remain online and the encoder process must continue running for the stream to stay live.
A VPS location in India may reduce network distance for some viewers, but it does not guarantee low latency, uninterrupted playback or a particular audience reach. Provider locations, performance and transfer terms vary; verify them directly before renting.
Configure YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to access the Live Control Room. If live streaming is not enabled yet, complete YouTube’s channel verification and activation flow, then allow up to 24 hours for first-time access.
- Create or schedule a stream for an encoder. In the stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, repository or support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
- Choose RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends this encrypted transport; its RTMPS documentation specifies connection over port 443. Enter the endpoint and key exactly as shown in the Live Control Room. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
- Configure the VPS encoder to read the sermon file or playlist and transmit at real-time speed. Confirm that the source repeats or advances as intended; a file sent faster than playback speed will not produce a continuous live programme.
- Start the encoder, then check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages before making the stream public. Verify the picture changes as expected and the audio is audible and in sync.
The exact encoder installation, command and service supervisor depend on the VPS operating system and software you choose. YouTube’s guidance establishes the stream destination and output requirements, but does not prescribe a particular VPS or FFmpeg deployment.
Choose stable encoder settings
Use a profile that the VPS can sustain continuously and that fits the source. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include these video bitrates; the help page does not display a publication year, so treat them as platform guidance and check the current page when configuring a new encoder.

For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Supported video codecs listed in its guidance include H.264, H.265 and AV1; listed audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. A static sermon image may not need 1080p60, but do not treat a custom lower bitrate as an official YouTube recommendation. Lower resolution and frame rate can reduce bandwidth and encoding load; choose a profile that remains clear enough for text, slides and any motion in the source. Test the actual upload path and monitor stream health rather than assuming the VPS’s advertised network speed is sustained throughput.

Make the stream resilient on a VPS
Continuous streaming is an operations task as well as an encoder configuration. YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring its health. On the VPS, practical safeguards include a process supervisor that can restart an encoder after an exit, logs that capture encoder errors, and alerts for a stopped process, high CPU use or network problems. A restart can restore the encoder process, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same live event or that viewers will see uninterrupted playback.
- Test the full route from source file through encoder and network to YouTube’s preview before relying on it.
- Watch for dropped frames, connection errors, audio problems and CPU saturation. Reduce output load or investigate the provider’s network if the VPS cannot sustain the selected settings.
- If the recording matters, keep a separate local or VPS recording and confirm that the file is growing. YouTube recommends checking the local archive file when recording locally; an independent copy also avoids relying exclusively on the platform archive.
- Keep the stream key out of logs and public configuration. Restrict access to the VPS and rotate the key if it may have been exposed.
Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit
“Nonstop” transmission and a reliable replay archive are different requirements. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a YouTube replay, schedule separate sessions that end before 12 hours rather than relying on one indefinitely running event. Maintain your own recording as an additional safeguard. You are responsible for having the rights required for both the live broadcast and any resulting archive. Check not just the sermon recording but also worship songs, background music, recorded readings, video clips, slides and material created by other people. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the feed with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
