You can stream episodes discovered through an RSS podcast feed on YouTube around the clock, but YouTube does not take an RSS URL as a live-video input. You need an RSS-to-playlist process to find and queue episode media, a player or automation layer to play it with a video track, and an encoder to send a continuous stream to YouTube. You also need permission to rebroadcast every episode and its included material.

How the RSS-to-YouTube setup works

An RSS feed helps podcast apps discover episodes and updates. It is not the media stream YouTube needs. Build the workflow as three separate parts:

  1. Feed reader: checks the RSS feed for episode enclosure URLs and stages media you are permitted to use.
  2. Queue and player: orders the episodes, plays them in sequence, and defines what happens when the queue ends or an episode cannot be reached.
  3. Encoder: combines the audio with a video signal and sends the continuous audio-video program to YouTube.

YouTube’s official documentation describes the encoder and broadcast side, not a particular RSS polling or playlist-rotation tool. Choose or build that automation separately, then test the full chain before leaving it unattended.

Check eligibility and rebroadcast rights first

Confirm the channel can livestream

YouTube’s live-streaming guidance lists a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and an operator aged at least 16 as requirements. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room status before investing time in automation: YouTube’s live-streaming guide. Eligibility and interface details can change, so the channel’s current status is the practical check.

Get permission for every part of the program

An RSS URL does not grant permission to download, store, rebroadcast, or monetize an episode. Confirm the rights for the podcast itself and for music, clips, guest contributions, and other material inside each episode. If your permission is limited, follow its conditions; obtain permission from the relevant rights holders where needed.

Build the RSS episode queue

Choose or create a feed reader

Use a feed reader or automation that detects new episode enclosure URLs, stages the permitted audio, and adds episodes in an intentional order. Decide whether new episodes go to the front or end of the queue and whether older episodes repeat. The reviewed YouTube documentation does not identify or validate an RSS-to-YouTube service, so confirm that any tool you choose actually handles feed updates, downloads or stages media, and outputs a usable playlist.

Plan for feed and media failures

  • Choose what the player does when the queue is empty: loop an existing playlist, play a holding screen, or stop the program.
  • Decide how it handles an unreachable enclosure, an incomplete download, or a changed feed item. Avoid adding a file to the playback queue until it is ready to play.
  • Keep a local or cloud copy only when your rights permit storage and the copy is useful for uninterrupted playback.
  • Test what happens when the feed is unavailable and when the player or automation process restarts.

Create an audio-and-video program

Podcast enclosure media is often audio, but YouTube’s encoder and API guidance describes transmitting audio-video content. Pair the episode audio with a video track, such as podcast artwork or a branded scene, and send both through the encoder. Do not assume that an audio-only enclosure can be sent directly to YouTube as a livestream.

Configure the YouTube broadcast and encoder

Create the broadcast and protect the stream key

Set up the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room or through the Live Streaming API. YouTube’s API distinguishes the incoming liveStream resource from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast; the stream resource carries ingestion details, while the broadcast represents the event viewers watch. Keep the stream key and ingestion credentials private. The YouTube Live Streaming API guide describes binding a stream to a broadcast and gives a 24/7 feed as an example.

OBS is one software-encoder option, but it does not by itself discover RSS episodes or manage their queue. Follow the current YouTube Live Control Room or encoder instructions for the ingestion details and settings shown for your channel. YouTube recommends testing the encoder and monitoring audio and video quality. Its help guidance says expensive equipment is not required to get started; it recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events.

Choose one continuous event or separate broadcasts

A single continuous broadcast suits a channel that wants one always-on program. The API guide’s example also shows a 24/7 broadcast remaining live while a separate interview broadcast is started and completed using the same stream resource. If recurring shows need to overlap or use independent settings, YouTube’s guide says separate stream resources may make sense. This API example describes how broadcasts can be organized; it is not a promise of uninterrupted service.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

YouTube recommends trying a test livestream, checking the preview before starting, verifying the watch page on the channel and a mobile device, checking any local archive, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. For an RSS-driven loop, also test:

  • An episode ending and the next item starting without silence or a stuck image.
  • A new episode appearing in the feed and entering the queue in the expected position.
  • An empty queue, unavailable feed, unreachable enclosure, and incomplete media file.
  • A player or encoder restart and recovery after a network or power interruption.
  • That viewers can hear the program clearly and see the intended video throughout playback.

These additional tests are operational precautions; they do not mean YouTube automatically handles feed outages, queue errors, or local internet failures.

Keep the stream reliable

A 24/7 setup depends on the feed automation, player, encoder, host computer or service, and network—not just the YouTube broadcast. Decide how each component restarts after a crash or outage and how you will learn that it has failed. YouTube’s API documentation describes a 24/7 feed as a use case, but that is not an uptime guarantee.

If you use OBS, watch its connection indicator and dropped-frame count. OBS says a rising dropped-frame count or yellow/red connection indicator can point to an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce the load or address connection stability when those symptoms appear; do not assume a stream is healthy merely because the encoder still shows it as active. See OBS’s dropped-frames guidance.

Start by evaluating whether an existing computer and software encoder can meet your uptime and production needs. Consider a dedicated computer or hardware encoder only when your operational requirements justify the added equipment and management. YouTube says expensive equipment is not necessary to get started, while recommending professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events. No general cost comparison is established here; account for hardware, power, internet, storage, and the time needed to monitor and recover the system.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a prerecorded-video loop, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running at home: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. It does not replace the RSS discovery and rights-checking work described above; make sure you have permitted media ready to upload.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no live picture or audio The encoder is not sending the expected audio-video input, or the broadcast and stream are not configured together. Check the encoder preview, video track, audio source, broadcast binding, and ingestion credentials in Live Control Room or the API setup.
Episodes play once and then the stream goes silent The queue has ended and no end-of-queue behavior is configured. Set a loop, holding program, or deliberate stop behavior and test it at an episode boundary.
A new podcast episode does not appear The feed reader has not detected the update, or the enclosure could not be reached or staged. Check the feed reader’s last poll, enclosure URL, download status, and queue rules.
Playback stalls or an episode is skipped The media is unavailable, incomplete, or the player does not recover cleanly. Verify the staged file is playable; test a failed enclosure and configure a defined skip, retry, or fallback behavior.
OBS shows dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator OBS identifies an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain as possible causes. Check network stability and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable, then monitor whether dropped frames continue.
The channel’s livestream cannot start The channel may not meet the current eligibility requirements or may have a restriction. Review the channel’s Live Control Room status and YouTube’s current eligibility guidance.
