Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), Hyderabad, has completed a major expansion of its southern terminal precinct, and its operator has submitted plans for further growth. The next proposed phase would add a northern terminal and runway; it is not yet a completed project. Here is how the current airport, proposed capacity increases and long-term master plan differ.
What is the status of Hyderabad airport’s upgrade?
The upgrade is a phased program, not one newly announced construction contract. The terminal expansion in the southern precinct is complete. Further southern-precinct improvements and a new northern precinct appear in GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited’s (GHIAL) proposals examined by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (AERA).
AERA’s consultation paper, dated 19 June 2026, considers GHIAL’s proposed capital plan for the Fourth Control Period, which runs from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2031. It is a consultation—not a final tariff order or confirmation that all proposed construction has received final approval. AERA said it would consider stakeholder submissions before issuing its final order.

AERA reports actual traffic of 30.48 million passengers at RGIA in FY 2025–26. That is passenger throughput for the financial year, not the airport’s design capacity or a forecast.

What is already built in the southern terminal?
The airport’s eastern terminal expansion opened in November 2023 and its western expansion in September 2024, according to AERA. The regulator gives the resulting integrated terminal’s total area as 379,370 square metres and its design capacity as 34 MPPA. AERA separately identifies 258,089 square metres as the added expansion area. GHIAL’s 2025 sustainability announcement describes approximately 379,370 square metres of added built-up area; for the integrated terminal total and expansion-area distinction, AERA’s figures are more explicit.
The completed expansion is the foundation for the next proposals, but it should not be conflated with them. In particular, the northern terminal and runway are not part of the works AERA identifies as already completed.

How would the proposed southern-terminal enhancement work?
GHIAL has proposed improving the existing southern precinct before relying on a separate northern terminal. AERA’s review discusses passenger-processing changes and related terminal and airside work, including:

AERA’s assessment says the precinct could maintain stable performance at about 37 MPPA after interventions, with the higher proposed capacity dependent on peak spreading and process improvements. In other words, the top-end figure is not simply a measure of what the terminal can handle under every operating pattern. The Authority proposes to consider that capacity subject to service standards.

What is included in the proposed northern precinct?
GHIAL’s submission describes a passenger terminal of about 225,000 square metres, with integrated domestic and international processing and modular provision for later expansion. Its specified terminal facilities include:
- Four entry gates and 112 check-in counters.
- 16 automated tray return system (ATRS) lanes.
- 19 fixed-link passenger bridges and seven bus gates.
- Eight baggage claim belts and 30 immigration counters.
The wider proposal includes a new runway north of the existing runway, taxiways, aprons, navigational aids, an elevated cross-taxiway and other airside connections. It also includes access and landside work. These are details of GHIAL’s submission reproduced in AERA’s consultation paper, not evidence that each element is already under construction.

Is the airport’s over-100-MPPA plan the next project?
No. GHIAL describes capacity beyond 100 MPPA as the airport’s ultimate phased master-plan ambition. The operator’s vision includes multiple runways and terminals, taxiways, additional cargo terminals, commercial development and multimodal links. It is a longer-range airport plan, distinct from the proposed northern development that would take the combined terminal design capacity to 60 MPPA.

The sources do not set a firm delivery date for the complete master plan. Although multimodal links, including a metro, feature in the airport’s vision, that does not establish that a metro connection is operating or has a secured opening date.

What else has changed for cargo and passengers?
Cargo Terminal 2
GHIAL announced Cargo Terminal 2 as commissioned on 18 May 2026. The operator gives its area as 16,864 square metres and its initial handling capacity as around 50,000 metric tonnes a year, with dedicated expansion space intended to allow capacity to double to 100,000 tonnes annually. GHIAL describes separate inbound and outbound zones, multi-level racking, shipment build-up and breakdown areas, and a temperature-controlled zone for pharmaceuticals and perishables. These are operator-reported facility details and capacity figures.
Passenger information kiosks and maps
In August 2025, GMR/GHIAL announced a rollout of ten virtual information kiosks across check-in, boarding, arrivals and baggage claim, alongside interactive terminal maps online. The announced features include real-time flight information, 3D navigation, emergency support, Wi-Fi access for international travellers and a feedback option. The announcement describes the rollout and intended features; it does not establish a measured reduction in queues or improvement in passenger satisfaction.
What sustainability features are attributed to the expanded terminal?
GHIAL says the expanded terminal earned LEED Platinum under LEED v4 with a score of 84 points. Its announcement lists high-efficiency heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), insulation, occupancy-sensor LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, low-flow plumbing, drought-tolerant landscaping, paperless e-boarding and self-baggage drop among the measures associated with the terminal.
The certification and listed measures are reported by the airport operator. They do not, by themselves, establish a quantified reduction in the airport’s emissions or prove that the proposed expansion will deliver a particular environmental outcome.
What should travellers expect next?
The clearest distinction is between completed terminal expansion and proposed future capacity. The next steps described in AERA’s 2026 paper remain at the consultation and proposal stage; the paper does not provide a firm opening date for the northern terminal or runway. Nor do the available announcements establish that capacity growth will guarantee shorter queues, lower fares or a particular improvement in travel times. Travellers can use GHIAL’s announced online terminal maps for wayfinding, but should check current airport information for operational details.
