To loop one podcast MP4 in a YouTube Live stream, add it to an OBS Media Source and enable Loop. For multiple episodes, use an OBS VLC Video source with a playlist and Loop Playlist enabled. Then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key, test the complete audio and video path, and monitor the stream: a loop setting alone does not guarantee unattended 24/7 operation.
Choose the OBS source for your podcast files
| Your setup | OBS source | Repeat setting | Important note |
|---|---|---|---|
| One local MP4 | Media Source | Loop | OBS documents MP4 support and replay when playback completes. |
| Several files in a playlist | VLC Video | Loop Playlist | VLC must be installed; use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Gapless transitions are not promised, so test the episode boundaries. |
These playback controls are documented by the OBS Project’s media sources guide. Use the built-in Media Source for a single file; choose VLC Video when you need a playlist.
Prepare and loop one MP4
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the live stream.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source. Give it a recognizable name.
- In the source properties, select Local File, browse to the podcast MP4, and select it.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source properties.
- Start a test recording or preview the scene. Confirm the video plays, the audio meters move in the Audio Mixer, and the file starts again after it ends.
OBS also exposes properties such as Restart playback when source becomes active, Show nothing when playback ends, and Visibility Behaviour. These can affect playback when you change scenes or when a source ends. Check them in your own scene arrangement rather than assuming the defaults suit it.
Set up a playlist for multiple episodes
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS requires VLC for the VLC Video source to appear; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In the scene’s Sources dock, select + and add VLC Video.
- In the source properties, add the podcast MP4 files to the playlist in the order you want them played.
- Make sure Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS documents this option as on by default, but verify it in the properties.
- Test the entire playlist, including the final-to-first transition. Listen for pauses, silence, missing audio, or abrupt changes between episodes.
Do not assume playlist transitions are gapless: OBS’s documentation describes playlist playback and looping, but does not promise a seamless transition between files.

Build the scene and verify embedded audio
For a podcast stream, the MP4 already contains the program audio; a separate microphone or capture card is not required just to play that file. If you want a visual, add cover art, a title card, or text as another source.
- OBS draws sources higher in the Sources list above sources lower in the list. Arrange the artwork and text so they overlay the video as intended.
- Watch the Audio Mixer while the MP4 plays. Its meters should move when podcast audio is present.
- Make a short test recording and play it back. Confirm both picture and sound are present and in sync, including at a loop or playlist transition.
OBS recommends testing output settings before a first stream. Its streaming tips also cover checking the output before going live.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose the YouTube service integration if available, or enter the server URL and stream key manually, according to the setup you are using.
- Apply the settings, then start a private or unlisted test stream where appropriate. Keep the stream key private: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your channel.
- In the Live Control Room, check the preview and stream health before making the stream public.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains how to enter the server URL and key in encoder software. Exact service labels can vary with software versions and setup method.
Set video encoding for a stable feed
YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings recommend RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually select—not a number copied from a different format.

| Example output | YouTube-listed bitrate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended | YouTube’s encoder guidance retrieved in 2026. This is specific to H.264 at 1080p30, not a universal bitrate for every stream. |
Check YouTube’s current settings table for other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs. YouTube says it detects stream settings automatically and transcodes live feeds into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable encoder feed.
Test before publishing and monitor the stream
- Start a private or unlisted test where appropriate and wait for the Live Control Room preview.
- Confirm the correct scene is visible and the podcast audio is audible—not just that OBS’s meters move.
- Let at least one file finish and repeat, or let the playlist advance and loop. Check the transition for gaps or missing sound.
- Watch the Live Control Room’s stream-health indicators while OBS is sending.
- If you are recording locally as a backup, confirm the recording starts and its file grows.
If OBS reports rendering or encoding overload, OBS’s troubleshooting guidance suggests reducing output resolution or frame rate, simplifying the scene, or limiting expensive sources. Which change helps depends on your hardware and the scene; retest the complete output after adjusting settings.

Plan for long streams and archives
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. The 12-hour threshold is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup; its DVR help also notes that rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours.
If a replayable archive matters, record locally and plan how the stream will end and restart. The OBS loop and playlist controls repeat media, but they do not establish that your particular computer, operating system, network, or YouTube event will recover automatically after a crash or outage. Treat a long-running stream as something to test and monitor, and arrange human or system monitoring appropriate to your reliability needs.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check copyright and rebroadcast rights
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it; a copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. YouTube says licensed third-party content can still be interrupted unless the rights holder has added the channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Before broadcasting, confirm you have permission for the podcast recording and every included element—such as music, clips, and artwork—to be rebroadcast live on YouTube. A license by itself may not prevent an automated interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Troubleshoot common OBS podcast-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source or VLC Video is missing | VLC Video requires VLC; the Media Source is a separate built-in source. | For a playlist, install VLC and match its architecture to OBS (64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC). For one MP4, add Media Source instead. |
| The MP4 plays once and stops | Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. | Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop, then test through the end of the file. |
| The playlist ends instead of restarting | Loop Playlist is off. | Open VLC Video properties and verify Loop Playlist is enabled. |
| No podcast audio reaches the stream | The source may not be playing, its audio may be absent, or the output path may not be behaving as expected. | Check the Audio Mixer meters, listen to an OBS test recording, and check the YouTube preview before publishing. |
| There is a pause or silence between episodes | Playlist transitions are not documented as gapless; files may also have different endings or silence. | Test the actual boundaries and adjust or edit the source files if seamless continuity is required. |
| YouTube reports an unhealthy feed or OBS overload | The output may exceed what the computer or connection sustains, or encoding/rendering may be overloaded. | Check stream health and OBS status; try a lower output resolution or frame rate, a simpler scene, or fewer expensive sources, then test again. |
| The stream is interrupted despite having a license | Automated third-party content matching can interrupt a live stream; the rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel. | Check YouTube’s copyright notices and confirm live-rebroadcast permissions and Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder. |
| The live stream has no usable archive | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured; shorter streams are not guaranteed to archive. | Keep a local recording if the archive matters and plan the stream length and restart schedule accordingly. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want the podcast MP4 to keep looping on YouTube without leaving an OBS computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud service for always-on YouTube streams from uploaded videos. The basic setup is three steps:
- Upload the podcast recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. The same flat price per slot applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K at 60 fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically attempts recovery if YouTube drops the stream; that is not a guarantee against every interruption. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
