Carnival and CarMax both reported year-over-year earnings improvement on September 29, 2026, but their results point to different strengths and risks. Carnival posted record quarterly results and strong bookings despite higher fuel prices. CarMax sold more vehicles and nearly doubled net earnings, while profit per vehicle declined. The companies’ earnings releases do not establish the size or timing of any stock-price reaction, so “pop” should not be read as a quantified market move.
What each company reported
The announcements cover different businesses and fiscal periods: Carnival Corporation’s third quarter of 2026 and CarMax’s second quarter of fiscal 2027. Their figures are useful to compare as earnings news, not as equivalent measures of performance.
| Company and period | Reported results | Pressure point |
|---|---|---|
| Carnival Corporation, Q3 2026 | $1.9 billion net income and $2.0 billion adjusted net income, both company-reported all-time highs; revenue and constant-currency net yields were also all-time highs, according to its September 29, 2026 release. | The company cited a spike in fuel prices. |
| CarMax, Q2 fiscal 2027 | $7.9 billion net revenue, up 19.5% year over year; combined retail and wholesale unit sales of 387,735, up 14.7%. Net earnings were $165.3 million versus $95.4 million a year earlier. | Retail and wholesale gross profit per unit both fell year over year. |
Why Carnival’s quarter was strong
Carnival said its third-quarter net income of $1.9 billion and adjusted net income of $2.0 billion were both all-time highs. The company also reported all-time highs for revenue and constant-currency net yields. These are company-reported results from its September 29, 2026 earnings release.
Demand indicators in the release were strong as well. Customer deposits reached a third-quarter record, nearly 7% above the prior-year record while capacity growth was flat. Carnival also reported record booked occupancy and pricing for 2027. These booking measures describe the company’s reported position; they are not a guarantee of future results.

Fuel remains a cost risk
Strong demand did not remove cost pressure. Carnival cited a spike in fuel prices, even as it said its full-year outlook reflected an operational improvement of more than $150 million in adjusted net income compared with the guidance it gave in June. That is a company outlook comparison, not a realized increase in full-year earnings.
CEO Josh Weinstein said, “We delivered another quarter of top and bottom-line records, with accelerating demand and even stronger cost discipline driving results ahead of our expectations.” The statement reflects management’s assessment of the quarter; it does not independently establish how demand, fuel prices or results will develop.

Why CarMax earnings rose—and what the per-car figures show
CarMax reported second-quarter fiscal 2027 net revenue of $7.9 billion, 19.5% higher year over year, alongside 387,735 combined retail and wholesale unit sales, up 14.7%. Net earnings climbed to $165.3 million from $95.4 million, and diluted earnings per share rose to $1.16 from $0.64—an 81.3% increase, according to the company’s September 29, 2026 earnings release.
The stronger total earnings came with weaker gross profit per unit. Retail used-vehicle gross profit per unit fell $111 to $2,105, while wholesale gross profit per unit fell $135 to $858. CarMax said pricing actions to improve sales continued to weigh on retail per-unit profit. Wholesale unit volume increased, but wholesale gross profit per unit declined.

Sales progress and strategy
CarMax CEO Keith Barr said, “Our strong second quarter results reflect solid execution and early progress against Shift into GEAR, our four-pillar strategy to strengthen CarMax’s core business and return the company to sustained growth.” The release presents this as management’s view of early progress; it is not a guarantee that the strategy will deliver sustained growth.

How to read the two earnings stories
- Demand and volume: Carnival pointed to record deposits, booked occupancy and pricing; CarMax reported higher combined unit sales.
- Profitability: Carnival reported record net and adjusted net income. CarMax reported higher net earnings and diluted EPS.
- Pressure: Carnival highlighted fuel-price exposure. CarMax’s sales-improving pricing actions coincided with lower retail gross profit per unit, and wholesale gross profit per unit also declined.
- Forward indicators: Carnival cited its full-year outlook and 2027 booking position. CarMax’s CEO described early progress on a strategy; the cited release figures do not establish that the strategy will achieve its longer-term goal.
The companies’ earnings releases report operating and financial results, not the exact movement in either company’s shares. They do not establish what a stock did over a particular time window or whether a move was caused by these results. A precise answer to whether either stock “popped” requires separate market-price evidence.
