For recursive code search, start with rg (ripgrep): it searches directories by default and respects common ignore files, which often keeps results focused. The other tools here solve different problems rather than making grep obsolete: ugrep adds archive and compressed-file search options, ack and ag are programmer-focused searchers, and git grep fits Git repository workflows. GNU grep remains a sensible choice for simple matching, portable scripts, and systems where it is already installed.

Which grep alternative should you use?

Tool Best fit Key trade-off
rg (ripgrep) Recursive search in code repositories and directories Ignore rules help reduce noise, but hidden and ignored files are skipped by default; its default regex engine lacks look-around and backreferences.
ug (ugrep) Search workflows that need archive or compressed-file support, Unicode or multiline patterns, or interactive query features It offers more modes and configuration to learn. See the ugrep project site for supported features.
ag (The Silver Searcher) Programmer-oriented recursive text search with file-type filters Filtering and output options are useful, but performance varies with the workload; no universal speed winner is established.
ack Programmer-focused search when Perl regular-expression syntax and explicit exclusions suit the task Regex syntax differs from other tools, and speed superiority should not be assumed.
git grep Finding text in a Git repository as part of a Git workflow It is repository-oriented, not a general search tool for arbitrary filesystem directories.

This is a task-based comparison, not a claim that every option outperforms grep in every circumstance. The Silver Searcher project also lists git grep and fzf as adjacent tools; fzf is a command-line fuzzy finder, not a drop-in regex search replacement.

How do you search a codebase recursively?

Use ripgrep as the default starting point

Run rg 'TODO' from the directory you want to search. Ripgrep searches recursively without a separate recursive flag and respects .gitignore and .ignore rules. That usually avoids generated files, dependencies, and other paths deliberately excluded from ordinary code work. Its user guide documents filtering behavior and options.

Those defaults can also make a search appear incomplete. Ripgrep normally omits hidden files and ignored paths. If a result you expect is missing, check whether the file is hidden or excluded by an ignore rule before changing tools. To include hidden files, add --hidden; to include ignored files as well, add --no-ignore. For example, rg --hidden --no-ignore 'TODO' broadens the search. This can bring in large or noisy directories, so use it deliberately.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose ag or ack for programmer-focused filtering

ag offers recursive programmer-oriented search, ignore behavior, file-type filters, hidden/all-file options, and output formats. Its manual describes these controls in detail: The Silver Searcher ag(1) manual. As with ripgrep, learn its filtering defaults when a search misses a file.

ack is another programmer-focused choice, with Perl regular expressions and explicit exclusion controls. Its ack(1p) manual is the reference for its pattern and option behavior. Pick it when those conventions fit an existing workflow, rather than on an unsupported assumption that it is always faster.

Use git grep when the search belongs to Git

Choose git grep when you want search within a repository as part of Git work. It is narrower than a general recursive search utility: the project documentation characterizes it as working only in Git repositories. It is therefore not the right choice for searching arbitrary folders outside that context.

Which tool searches inside zip files or compressed files?

Ugrep is the clearest option in this set when archive or compressed-file search matters. Its official site advertises archive and compressed-file search along with document search, Unicode handling, multiline patterns, and interactive query modes: ugrep. These are capabilities to consider when the content you need is not plain text in ordinary source files.

Do not assume every search utility supports the same archive formats or document types. The cited documentation establishes these capabilities for ugrep; it does not establish equivalent coverage for ripgrep, ag, ack, or git grep. Check the chosen tool’s documentation for the specific format and workflow you need.

Will your regular expressions work in a replacement?

No: regex engines are not interchangeable. Ripgrep’s default Rust regex engine provides linear-time guarantees, but it does not support look-around or backreferences. Its regex syntax reference explains the supported syntax. If a pattern needs PCRE2 features, ripgrep provides PCRE2 mode with -P when built or installed with PCRE2 support; availability depends on the installation.

A pattern that works in GNU grep, ack, or another utility may need to be rewritten for the selected engine. When a search fails or returns unexpected matches, check the tool’s regex dialect before assuming the text is absent. Ack’s Perl regex syntax is one reason it may suit a workflow that already uses those conventions.

Does ripgrep always run faster than grep?

No tool is a universal speed winner for every pattern and corpus. Ripgrep’s FAQ reports a 5–100× advantage over GNU grep in its benchmark comparisons, with results dependent on pattern and corpus; that is a project-reported range, not a general guarantee. See the ripgrep FAQ for its qualification. The Silver Searcher README also includes an author-reported benchmark, which should not be treated as an independently established result for all workloads.

For a practical choice, compare behavior on the files and patterns you actually search. Filtering, regex syntax, archive support, and whether the utility fits your existing scripts can matter more than a benchmark number.

When should you keep using grep?

  • For a simple line match where grep is already available and its behavior is what you need.
  • In scripts that depend on grep’s established options, output, or portability.
  • On a minimal system where installing another utility is inconvenient or impossible.

For broader recursive code search, rg is a strong default in this group. Choose ugrep for its documented archive and richer search modes, ack or ag for programmer-oriented workflows that fit their filtering and regex conventions, and git grep for repository-scoped Git work.
