Wouter Vrancken says he rejected an offer from Bulgarian club Ludogorets that would have paid him double his current Hearts earnings. He says the people behind Hearts’ project, its culture and life in Edinburgh mattered more than the higher pay. The report gives no exact salary, offer value or currency.
Why did Vrancken turn down the higher-paying offer?
In an interview reported on 3 October 2026, Vrancken said he received an attractive offer from Ludogorets and had conversations with teams in France during the summer. He did not identify the French teams or say that those conversations became formal offers.
He described the Ludogorets offer as worth “double what I do now,” but the report does not disclose a cash amount or currency. The comparison is his account, not a published contract figure. “If money had been the deciding factor, I would be in Bulgaria now,” he said.
Instead, Vrancken said he quickly developed a good feeling about the people and project at Hearts. He cited Vincent Kompany’s advice to pay attention to the people behind a project, and said Edinburgh and Hearts’ culture appealed to him. He said he had no regrets about choosing the club.

What did Vrancken say needs to change at Hearts?
More preparation before European qualifiers
Vrancken said Hearts’ pre-season schedule had been set before he joined and left the squad with only three weeks of preparation before facing Sturm Graz in Champions League qualifying. He also said the team had played only smaller Scottish sides beforehand. He linked the short preparation period to the difficult European start; these are his assessments as reported, not independently verified explanations of the results.
The report describes Hearts as having exited Champions League qualifying against Sturm Graz and later exited the Europa League against Benfica. Vrancken said the team’s turnaround began after a home draw with Benfica, when the squad recognized it could do more.

A more dominant style of play
Vrancken said Hearts’ previous approach emphasized organization and reacting to opponents. He wanted the team to keep more possession, play more football and control more matches. “From day one, my intention was to play more football,” he said, while acknowledging that the transition would take time.
What are Vrancken’s ambitions for Hearts?
Vrancken said he wanted to see progress in the team’s play and details during the season, with a longer-term ambition of competing with Celtic and Rangers and challenging for the title. The report says he described himself as having a two-year contract.

He also compared Hearts’ resources with those of its rivals, saying: “Rangers’ budget is twice as big as ours and Celtic’s is three times ours.” The report supplies no calculation or independent financial source for those comparisons, so they should be understood as Vrancken’s estimate, not established club budget figures.
