Kura Sushi USA is still expanding, and new restaurants remain its clearest reported sales-growth driver. But growth is not the same as stronger performance at existing locations: in fiscal 2025, sales rose while comparable sales, average unit volume and restaurant-level margin declined. Management’s fiscal 2026 targets called for further expansion, but they are guidance—not completed results.
How Kura Sushi’s growth model works
Kura Sushi USA describes itself as a technology-enabled Japanese restaurant concept built around a revolving sushi service model. Its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says the company plans to open restaurants in existing and new markets, encourage comparable-sales growth through traffic, brand awareness, menu offerings and renovations, and improve corporate profitability as its restaurant base scales. That plan has two distinct tests: whether the company can add locations, and whether existing restaurants can maintain traffic and unit economics. Total sales can increase as the chain grows even if the average restaurant is producing less than before.

Fiscal 2025 sales were $282.8 million, up from $237.9 million in fiscal 2024. The company reported comparable restaurant sales down 1.3%, with traffic down 3.1% and price/mix up 1.8%. Restaurant-level operating profit and Adjusted EBITDA are company-reported non-GAAP measures. The rise in total sales and adjusted EBITDA is positive, but lower AUV and a lower restaurant-level operating-profit margin show why sales growth alone does not establish improving restaurant productivity. In its fiscal 2026 third-quarter release, Kura Sushi reported 94 locations across 24 states and Washington, DC. It opened seven restaurants during the quarter and reported three additional openings afterward. In its fiscal 2026 second-quarter filing, the company said tariffs had a considerable impact on operations and expected continuing effects on food and beverage, construction, equipment and other operating costs. Management said lower food and beverage tariffs were offset by commodity inflation and that it had raised menu prices in the first quarter. How to judge whether the growth story is strengthening
Track restaurant openings alongside comparable sales, rather than reading total sales in isolation. For a clearer picture of the business, subsequent results need to show whether traffic and AUV stabilize or improve, whether restaurant-level margin holds up, and whether planned openings are delivered. Fiscal 2025 demonstrates the distinction: sales grew, but comparable sales fell and both AUV and restaurant-level margin were below fiscal 2024.
