Spoilers for Colleen Hoover’s Verity. The ending does not confirm whether Verity’s disturbing manuscript or her explanatory letter tells the truth. Readers have two competing accounts, and the best way to judge them is to compare each with what Lowen witnesses while remembering that neither document is independently verified.
What happens at the end of Verity?
Lowen, hired to continue Verity Crawford’s bestselling series, discovers an unfinished autobiographical manuscript among the injured author’s papers. It appears to confess violent urges and an obsessive attachment to Jeremy. After the manuscript comes to light, a letter attributed to Verity offers a very different explanation: she says the pages were a writing exercise in which she tried to write from the perspective of an evil character, using a technique called “antagonistic journaling.”
The manuscript and letter therefore make competing claims about Verity’s thoughts and actions. The manuscript reads as incriminating; the letter asks readers to reinterpret it as fiction. The story does not provide independent confirmation that settles the conflict.
What does Colleen Hoover say the ending means?
In a Goodreads Q&A, Hoover said, “I wrote the book from Lowen’s pov.” That identifies Lowen as the point-of-view character, but it does not confirm whether the manuscript or the letter is true. It is not an authorial ruling on what happened.

The distinction matters because the manuscript is something Lowen discovers, not an omniscient account. The letter, in turn, is Verity’s retrospective explanation, not independently verified proof. Readers receive both through the story’s limited perspective.
How to weigh the manuscript against the letter
Rather than treating either document as a definitive answer, compare what each explains and what it leaves uncertain:

- Consistency with observed behavior: Which account better fits the scenes Lowen witnesses? A detail may support one reading without proving it.
- Motive and opportunity: What would Verity, Jeremy, or Lowen need to have intended or concealed for each version to hold?
- Independent corroboration: Does a claim have support beyond the document making it? The two accounts are not independently corroborated by the available evidence.
- Explanatory cost: Which earlier details must you reinterpret to accept a version? The letter asks readers to reconsider how they understood the manuscript; accepting the manuscript’s apparent account also requires judging it in light of the letter.
- Point of view: Because the story is told from Lowen’s perspective, ask what she can know directly and what reaches her only through a document.
These questions help distinguish textual evidence from inference. Saying that a scene supports one reading is more precise than claiming it proves that reading.

Hoover’s official site lists a collector’s hardcover that includes an exclusive new chapter. The listing establishes that the edition has additional material, but it does not establish whether that chapter changes the ending’s interpretation. Check which edition you have before making claims about what the extra chapter resolves.
