Delaware freshman quarterback Tyler Bell made his first reported game appearance against Liberty on October 2, 2026, completing four of nine passes for 42 yards and a touchdown in the Blue Hens’ 30–14 loss. His late scoring connection with Matthew McKinley-Daniels gave Delaware its second touchdown of the fourth quarter; it did not settle who would start at quarterback next.
How Tyler Bell’s first appearance unfolded
Liberty led 30–0 before Delaware mounted two fourth-quarter scoring drives. Braden Streeter threw the first Blue Hens touchdown, a 58-yard pass to Donovan Lewis. Bell then found Matthew McKinley-Daniels for a 27-yard touchdown, and Bell ran in the conversion. Delaware’s official game recap records Bell with four completions on nine attempts, 42 passing yards, one touchdown and no interceptions.
Who is Delaware quarterback Tyler Bell?
Delaware’s current roster lists Bell as a freshman quarterback, No. 7, from East Rutherford, New Jersey, and St. Peter’s Prep. He graduated from St. Peter’s Prep in 2025. The university’s roster biography credits him with starting for three seasons, throwing for 5,064 yards and totaling 6,196 yards and 79 touchdowns in high school, including a school-record 65 career passing touchdowns.
How Bell fits into Delaware’s quarterback situation
In its August 5, 2026 preseason preview, Delaware identified senior Nick Minicucci as the incumbent starter. Returning quarterbacks included juniors Braden Streeter and Riley Trujillo, while sophomore EJ Archield Jr. was seeking his collegiate debut and freshmen Bell and Sean Sutherland joined the room. The preview also noted that Minicucci led Conference USA in 2025 with 3,683 passing yards and averaged 283.3 passing yards per game; those are Minicucci’s figures, not Bell’s.

Local postgame coverage reports Archield started against Liberty, Streeter relieved him, and Bell entered later. Delaware used three quarterbacks in the game. Coach Ryan Carty said the staff wanted to evaluate its options and hoped a quarterback would distinguish himself if Minicucci remained out. In a statement quoted by Delaware LIVE, Carty said: “Where we go from here is gonna be us as coaches, you know, in that room and hopefully somebody pulls away with it when they get the opportunity too and proves that they’re the guy if Nick is out for a long time.”
The postgame account described Minicucci as week-to-week, but neither it nor the university recap confirmed who would start Delaware’s next game. Bell’s touchdown was a notable first appearance, not evidence that he had secured the starting job.
