Microsoft’s US pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists Planner Plan 1 at $10 per user per month, Planner and Project Plan 3 at $30, and Plan 5 at $55, all billed yearly. Basic Planner may already be included in your Microsoft 365 subscription, so check your license before paying for premium features.
What Microsoft Planner does
Planner is Microsoft’s task and project management tool for creating work items, assigning them, organizing them, and following progress. Microsoft describes its Microsoft 365 offering as supporting templates, Teams integration, and Grid, Board, Schedule, and Charts views. Those options let a team arrange work in a list-like grid, a board, a calendar-style schedule, or progress charts. Microsoft’s Planner overview says, “Planner isn’t just for project managers; it’s a powerful tool for teams across departments.”
For a complicated project, the practical idea is to break the outcome into tasks, give each task an owner, and use a view that helps the team see what is planned and what remains. If work must happen in a particular order, paid tiers add dependencies and timeline capabilities. Microsoft lists these features, but they should not be mistaken for a guarantee that a particular workflow will suit every project.
Which Planner option fits your project?
Microsoft’s US comparison distinguishes Planner included with eligible Microsoft 365 subscriptions from three paid tiers. The prices below are per user per month with annual billing, as listed by Microsoft and accessed October 3, 2026; prices can change, and taxes or eligibility conditions may apply. Microsoft says paid plans use annual subscriptions with auto-renewal.

When the included Microsoft 365 Planner is enough
Start by checking the Microsoft 365 account your team already uses. Microsoft includes Planner with some Microsoft 365 plans, and the exact entitlement depends on the subscription. If you need to assign and organize tasks, coordinate in Teams, and use the standard views, an included entitlement may cover the job without an additional Planner subscription.

Do not assume that every Microsoft 365 subscription includes the same features. Microsoft separates basic Planner capabilities from premium planning features, so verify the plan’s entitlements before building a workflow around dependencies, Gantt-style timelines, goals, or sprint management.
When a paid Planner plan is worth considering
Choose Plan 1 for dependencies and timeline planning
Plan 1 is the listed starting point for premium planning features such as task dependencies and Timeline (Gantt) views. It also includes backlogs, sprints, and project goals in Microsoft’s comparison. Consider it when the team needs to represent work sequencing or manage projects using those capabilities rather than just track independent tasks.

Consider Plan 3 for Project applications and advanced project work
Plan 3 includes Plan 1 features and adds advanced dependencies and project management capabilities. Microsoft lists Project desktop and Project Online with this offering. It is the more relevant comparison if your work depends on those Project applications; confirm the current product page for the exact entitlements associated with your subscription.
Consider Plan 5 for portfolios and enterprise resource management
Plan 5 is Microsoft’s highest-priced tier in this comparison. The distinguishing additions are advanced portfolio management and enterprise resource management and allocation. It is aimed at organizations that need to manage projects and resources across a broader portfolio, rather than merely coordinate tasks on one team project.

Check licensing and Copilot details before upgrading
Microsoft’s Plan 3 page lists Copilot wording as a preview; that does not establish that Copilot is included for every subscriber or available in every region. Treat it as a separately qualified capability, not as a reason to buy Plan 3 without checking the current terms, eligibility, and licensing requirements. Before committing to a paid tier, match the subscription to a concrete need: dependencies or a timeline, Project applications, or portfolio and resource management. If none of those features is required, first determine whether the Microsoft 365 Planner access your organization already has is sufficient.
