What changed at TSA checkpoints?
The change applies to travel document checkers stationed at checkpoint entrances. TSA confirmed that officers performing this job will be on their feet while checking travelers’ documents. AFGE TSA Council 100 says chairs are being removed nationwide and that removals had begun at most commercial airports, according to reporting published September 29, 2026.
This is a staffing and workplace change at the document-checking position, not a change to what passengers must do during screening farther inside the checkpoint.
Why does TSA say officers should stand?
TSA has framed standing as a way to reinforce alertness, security posture and hospitality. The agency described document checkers as the first TSA employees travelers encounter and said officers must meet fitness-for-duty requirements. In a statement quoted by ABC News, TSA said, “This welcome change reinforces both our security posture and our commitment to hospitality by having these officers on their feet and alert.” ABC News reported the agency’s explanation on September 29, 2026.

TSA also said, “All officers must meet fitness for duty requirements to be capable of performing their vital national security function while simultaneously creating a welcoming and professional environment for travelers.” Those remarks explain the agency’s rationale; they do not establish that standing has improved security or the traveler experience.
Why is the union objecting?
AFGE TSA Council 100 says the decision was made without consultation. It argues that chairs provide ergonomic and safety support to officers who stand and walk on hard surfaces for extended periods. The union’s statement, quoted in coverage by Reuters and republished by Investing.com, says: “These chairs serve as basic ergonomic and safety support for officers that stand and walk on hard surfaces all day.” Investing.com’s September 29 report attributes the concern to AFGE TSA Council 100.

This is the union’s stated workplace-health and consultation objection. The reports do not establish that chair removal has caused injuries or quantify any health effects.
Will standing improve security or the passenger experience?
The available reporting documents TSA’s stated aims and the union’s concerns, but does not provide measured results showing that the chair change has improved or worsened alertness, security outcomes, or passenger experience. TSA’s explanation is a policy rationale, not evidence of an outcome. The Washington Post reported on the rationale and document-checking stations on October 1, 2026.
