No—on a commercial flight, tipping a flight attendant is generally not expected. Airline rules differ, though, so check your carrier’s current policy before offering cash or a gift. A sincere thank-you or post-flight compliment naming the crew member is an easy way to show appreciation.
Why tipping is not the norm on commercial flights
Cabin crew work includes safety, health, and security responsibilities, and tipping is not a standard part of the commercial-flight experience. A 2019 statement from the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA argued that safety work should not depend on variable tips. That position reflects the union’s response to airline tipping practices at the time, rather than a rule that applies to every carrier today.
There is also no broadly applicable recommended amount. You do not need to tip to receive attentive service, and a tip should not be treated as payment for a drink, seat upgrade, or other special treatment. Travel + Leisure reports a crew member cautioning passengers not to expect such favors in return for cash.

Airline policies can differ—and old examples may be out of date
Some carriers have allowed or offered ways to tip, while others have asked employees to decline tips. The available examples are dated and do not establish current rules for those airlines. They illustrate why it is better to check the policy for your specific flight than assume that one airline’s practice applies everywhere.

- Frontier: A 2019 Condé Nast Traveler report described an onboard tipping option introduced in 2015 and quoted a Frontier spokesman calling tips discretionary. A 2026 Travel + Leisure article also quoted a Southwest flight attendant discussing Frontier’s tipping option. Neither report is a current official Frontier policy notice.
- American Airlines: The 2026 Travel + Leisure article relayed an interviewed American flight attendant’s account of airline gift and food protocols. It does not establish a universal rule for every type of gift or confirm all current company policies.
- United: A 2018 The Points Guy article quoted a United representative saying employees could not accept tips under the policy then. That is historical reporting, not confirmation of United’s present policy.
The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA’s January 4, 2019 statement records the union’s opposition to variable tips as compensation for safety work. These sources do not provide a complete, current airline-by-airline policy list.
What to do if you want to show appreciation
Say thank you
A courteous, sincere thank-you is appropriate and does not put the crew member in the position of deciding whether they can accept money or a gift.

Send specific feedback after the flight
If an attendant went out of their way to help, use the airline’s post-flight feedback channel and name the crew member if you can. Travel + Leisure reports that praise may be relayed to supervisors; that outcome is not guaranteed.
Check before offering cash or a gift
If you are considering a tip or gift card, look for the airline’s current guidance or ask a company representative. Gift limits and acceptance rules can vary. Do not assume that homemade food or any other gift will be accepted: the American Airlines attendant quoted by Travel + Leisure said unsealed homemade food would be discarded under her airline’s protocol. That interview-based account should not be generalized to every airline.

How to handle an offered tip or an awkward moment
If a flight attendant declines your cash or gift, accept the answer graciously and do not insist. Employees may be required to follow company policy, and rules can differ by carrier. If you have not checked the airline’s guidance, a thank-you or post-flight compliment is the lower-pressure choice.
This guidance is for commercial flights. The cited sources do not establish etiquette or policies for private charter crews, every airline, or every country.
