Assuming “my platform API” means the Kubernetes API, application updates are reconciled by comparing the desired state in a resource’s spec with the live state, then making safe changes until they match. A controller’s reconcile loop may run after watched-resource events and may run more than once, so it must tolerate concurrent updates and retries.

What reconciliation means in Kubernetes

A reconciler takes a resource’s declared desired state and works to bring the actual system state into line with it. In an Operator, the custom resource commonly holds the application’s desired configuration, while the controller manages the Kubernetes resources needed to implement that configuration. The Operator SDK describes this desired-state role.

Reconciliation is not simply a one-time update request. The controller can respond to events on resources it watches, including relevant dependent resources, and then evaluate what action is needed. The Operator SDK tutorial explains reconciliation in response to watched-resource events.

Build an update flow that converges

  1. Put desired application state in the resource spec. Define the inputs that users are meant to control there, and make the reconciler responsible for translating those inputs into managed resources.
  2. Watch the resources that can affect the application. Watch the primary custom resource and relevant dependencies so changes can enqueue reconciliation work. An event is a prompt to check state, not proof that a particular write should happen.
  3. Read current state before deciding what to change. Compare the live object with the desired configuration. If it is already correct, avoid an unnecessary write; this keeps repeat runs from generating needless updates.
  4. Choose an update operation that fits the change. Use PUT when replacing the representation is appropriate and you can handle version conflicts. Use PATCH for a partial change or when the chosen patch format can express the necessary consistency conditions.
  5. Handle conflicts by rereading and recalculating. If another writer changes the object between your read and write, fetch the latest state, compare it again with the desired state, and retry the resulting change rather than blindly resending a stale write.
  6. Make repeated runs safe. A retry or another event should move the system toward the same desired result, not duplicate harmful side effects. Keep actions that cannot safely repeat from being triggered unconditionally on each reconcile.
  7. Expose the outcome and watch for persistent failures. Report progress and errors using the status conventions chosen for your API, and monitor repeated failures. Kubernetes operators do not share one universal status schema.

The Operator SDK supports operator development with Go, Ansible, and Helm; the workflow and implementation details depend on which approach you use.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose between PUT and PATCH

Consideration PUT PATCH
What it expresses Replaces the resource representation. Describes a partial change to the resource.
Concurrency handling The client supplies the resourceVersion it read. If that version is stale, the API server can reject the update with HTTP 409 Conflict; the client must handle the conflict. A patch can use conditions to check consistency. Select a patch type and condition strategy appropriate to the fields and concurrency risks involved.
Unknown or unrelated fields A client that decodes and rewrites an object may drop fields it does not know about. A partial change can limit what the client modifies, though the exact behavior depends on the patch format.
Retry after a concurrent change Read the current object and recompute the replacement before retrying. Re-evaluate the intended partial change against current state and its conditions before retrying.

These behaviors and the need to handle stale versions are documented in Kubernetes API concepts. Prefer the operation that preserves the assumptions your update depends on: if correctness relies on the value you read, detect intervening changes rather than applying an unchecked stale decision.

Why idempotence matters when updates repeat

Controllers may process the same desired state repeatedly, including after retries or unrelated watched events. An idempotent reconcile operation can run again without producing a different harmful result each time; it continues to synchronize managed resources toward the same target. The Operator SDK recommends idempotent reconciliation.

In practice, compare before writing and avoid unconditional side effects in the reconcile path. If an operation has an effect outside the resource state that cannot safely be repeated, design a separate way to ensure it occurs only when appropriate. The exact mechanism depends on the application and is not prescribed by a universal Kubernetes status convention.

Diagnose an update that does not settle

  • Repeated HTTP 409 responses: the write is based on a stale resourceVersion. Read the newest object, re-evaluate the desired change, and retry with the current version or suitable patch conditions.
  • Unrelated fields disappear: inspect whether the client is decoding and replacing the whole resource while omitting fields it does not recognize. Consider a narrower patch or ensure the replacement retains the fields it must preserve.
  • The controller keeps writing an already-correct object: compare the actual and desired fields before issuing updates, and check whether the comparison or defaulting behavior causes the controller to perceive a difference each run.
  • Retries repeat an external action: identify side effects that execute on every reconcile and make their execution safe under repetition rather than assuming each event happens once.
  • No reconcile occurs after a dependency changes: confirm the controller watches the relevant dependent resource and that its event path queues the application’s reconciliation.
