An AOL report published on October 1, 2026, says patrol officers spotted the boys on Tuesday riding e-scooters the wrong way on a slip road at Hillington junction. It says the boys were wearing balaclavas, that officers stopped them and took them home, and that both scooters were seized. The report says both boys were charged with road traffic offences.
The same report says one of the boys’ parents was charged under the Road Traffic Act. It does not specify the alleged offence or give an outcome for that case. These are details reported by a news outlet, not a court-verified account; the report does not establish that any of the people involved were found guilty.
Can you ride an e-scooter on a public road in Scotland?
No, not if it is privately owned. UK Government guidance says privately owned e-scooters cannot be ridden in public, including on roads, pavements and in parks. Official rental scooters are different, but not on motorways
Eligible scooters used through official rental schemes have a limited public-use exception: government guidance says they may be ridden on public roads and cycle lanes, but not on pavements or motorways. That exception does not make riding on an M8 slip road permissible. A privately owned scooter does not qualify for the rental-scheme exception.
