Tavern Keeper’s Major Update 2, titled “Digging Deeper,” went live on October 1, 2026, bringing cellars, stairs, and expansion areas to give players more ways to shape their taverns. It also adds Domhain, a dwarven campaign scenario, new businesses, and expanded staff and progression systems.
What “Digging Deeper” changes about building
The headline addition is multi-level construction: players can dig cellars and build stairs in every level, rather than being limited to a single-floor layout. Expansion areas are also available in three scenarios: Riverbottom, Halflington, and Domhain.
How to unlock construction
Cellars and expansions use the Construct Foundation tool in the Build Room menu. Construction requires staff assigned to the Dogsbody role who have the Construction skill, and the work can cost a substantial amount of in-game gold. Difficulty settings affect how challenging the construction requirements are; the announcements do not provide a fixed cost that applies to every tavern.
Domhain adds a new dwarven campaign
Domhain is the fourth campaign scenario and, according to the developer, the largest. Set among dwarven clans in the mountains, it combines continuing patron demand and earthquakes with a quest to help unearth an ancient artifact. The setting gives the new construction options a distinct context, while the scenario also introduces new ways to run a business.

From Experimental testing to release
“Digging Deeper” first appeared on Steam’s Experimental branch on September 3, 2026, ahead of its general release on October 1. The developer described Experimental as “where we polish new updates before they become generally available.” The September testing notice warned that the branch could have bugs, balance issues, missing translations, or missing voice-over. The release announcement says the team made fixes and balance changes during that period, but does not claim every issue has been resolved.
In the October announcement, Patrick, signing for the Tavern Keeper Team, thanked players for their feedback: “We just want to say thanks for your constructive input, the game is much better because of it.”

What to expect next
The developer says its next focus, after Update 2 settles, is Major Update 3, “Strut Your Staff.” The stated direction is more options for staff, staff management and development, and running the tavern. No release date has been announced, so this is a roadmap intention rather than a dated commitment.

For players most interested in designing and expanding a tavern, cellars, stairs, and scenario-specific expansion areas are the biggest change. Starting Domhain offers a different draw: a dwarven setting, earthquakes, an artifact quest, and the new business systems. Construction is not simply free extra space, however; it calls for Construction-skilled Dogsbody staff and in-game gold. The update’s features extend beyond Domhain through changes to staff duties, reputation, patron ratings, and scenario progression.
