Google has not released a voice-activated Emergency SOS feature. An October 1, 2026 report by Android Authority found hands-free SOS references in a build of Google’s Personal Safety app. The report interprets an animation as showing a user saying “Help” three times, but that phrase and activation sequence are not confirmed Google instructions.
Can you say “Help” three times to start Emergency SOS on Android?
Not as a confirmed, available Android feature. Android Authority’s report says Personal Safety app build 2026.09.16.982745548 contains interface text for adding a hands-free way to start SOS, and for saying “yes” to continue or “cancel” to dismiss it. The report reads an animation as depicting “Help” said three times. That is an interpretation of the animation, not a published Google specification.
The report said the option was not yet available to users when it was published on October 1, 2026. Google’s official Android Emergency SOS instructions do not confirm this voice trigger, its final wording, supported devices, or a release date. Treat it as a feature spotted in app code, not a way to summon help today.
How Android Emergency SOS works now
Google documents Emergency SOS for Android 12 and later, though the Personal Safety app and its features are available only on some devices. The documented trigger is pressing the phone’s power button five or more times. Depending on setup, you may need to touch and hold a confirmation target, or SOS actions may begin after a countdown.

- Open Settings and go to Safety & emergency > Emergency SOS. Labels and availability can vary by device.
- Review or configure the actions available on your phone, such as calling an emergency number, sharing your location with emergency contacts, or recording video.
- When you need SOS, press the power button five or more times, then follow the on-screen confirmation or countdown behavior you configured.
Google says Emergency SOS will not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. Location sharing with emergency contacts needs an internet connection; some Safety app features also depend on location services and permissions. Availability may vary by device, country, or region.
How the reported voice option differs from other Google emergency features

Google describes the separate automated service in its 2019 product announcement and current Phone app help page. It operates after an emergency call is placed. As Google Product Manager Paul Dunlop wrote in 2019, “A quick, informative conversation with an operator during an emergency call is critical, but in some cases, people are unable to verbally communicate, whether they’re injured, in a dangerous situation or have a speech impairment.”

Which phones will support voice-activated SOS?
There is no confirmed compatibility list. The code report concerns Google’s Personal Safety app, which is available on some Android devices; it does not establish which models will get the option or whether it will be limited by country. Android Authority suggests Samsung may not be included because Samsung has its own SOS features, but that is the publication’s expectation, not an official Google compatibility statement.
Could a voice trigger accidentally call emergency services?
The available report does not establish how the proposed trigger would confirm an emergency, prevent accidental activation, or behave in noisy conditions. Google’s current SOS setup can require a hold-to-confirm action or use a countdown, but there is no confirmed information about whether the reported voice option would use those safeguards.

Accidental calls are a real concern with emergency shortcuts: the National Emergency Number Association said PSAPs reported call volumes up to 30% higher in May and June 2023, with most of the increase attributed to a change in Android Emergency SOS behavior. That historical figure concerns accidental calls and the existing feature; it is not a prediction or measurement of the proposed voice trigger.

The sources here do not establish that Google Assistant can use a spoken command to start Emergency SOS. Do not confuse the code-reported Personal Safety option with Assistant voice dialing or with Google’s automated service that speaks to an operator after certain emergency calls. For the currently documented Android SOS procedure, use the configured power-button shortcut.
